Marching Band The Central High School Band involved students from both the Junior and Senior High Schools this year. This new plan proved very successful. The marching band contained sixty-four playing members, four majorettes, and fourteen members of the color guard. New uniforms were designed for the majorettes, color guard, and the drum major and were made to match the band uniforms. The marching band, led by Vivian Rutledge, drum majorette, won five trophies and $325.00 in prize money. In addition to performing at football games and in area parades, the marching band was chosen to be a princess band at the Tobacco Festival. They also performed for a Hampden-Sydney football game and at the Annual Military Parade in Hopewell. The concert band performed for the schools and the public with a Christmas concert in December and a spring concert in April. They went to the District Band Festival in March and received a rating of excellent. Eleven members of this concert band participated in the all-regional band and many students won medals for their performances at the Solo and Ensemble Festival.
