r s )£C£mlj£’i- 19 Carnal C Vacation FOREWORD The 1969-1970 school session was unique — it was a time of changes, a time of hope, a time of fear. It was this year that the black man and the white man were first thrust together on a basis of true equality. Despite trouble elsewhere, Central students accepted each other peacefully and made the first shaky steps toward demolishing the old barriers of racial prejudice. The SWORD AND SHIELD 1970 is the chronicle of this year of change. In these pages we have at- tempted to capture the successes and failures of learning, to abandon the past, and to accept all men as equals. Central fought to a respectful record of 5-4. These victories were primarily the result of long hours of practice and exercise. In a rough and tumble sport of this type, a player must be alert mentally and physi- cally every second. A gre.at amount of credit should be given to these boys and their fine coaches, who worked hard to make their school proud of its football squad. Central should also be proud of Edward Brown, who made all-district as a defensive linebacker. Awards Coach Griffith. George Marshall — Best Lineman. Coach Chester Corners Led by Att District, All Tournament David Tuck, the Central Chargers played to a fine 8-8 record dur- ing this 1969-70 basketball season. At the beginning of the season the Chargers were not rated among the top eight teams, but by the end of the season they had shown their worth — the Chargers played to a con- vincing fifth place in the Group II District III stand- ings. Teamwork throughout the season was a great asset to their success and even though there were heart- breaking moments, the team gained a sense of pride, responsibility, and good sportsmanship which is longer lasting than just a win or loss. 88 Basketball Lettermen David Tuck Roger Rickman Doug Tuck Steve Wrenn Senior Senior Senior Senior Earl Gee Junior George Marshall Junior Rolling Tucker Junior Gordon Johnson Sophomore Rasketball 89 Determination is Evident in Every l uck beats Crawford and Cleaton Rickman throws in a few fak es Johnson over Bartley Central 53 Dinwiddie 68 Central 86 Crewe 45 Central 53 Luther Foster 57 Central 43 Brunswick 62 Certtral 37 Randolph Henry 52 Central 58 Greensville County 55 Central 80 Blackstone 38 Central 67 Luther Foster 62 Central 64 Brunswick 62 Central 50 Park View 79 Central 72 Bluestone 81 Central 59 Bluestone 71 Central 64 Amelia 58 Central 64 Park View 90 Central 74 Greensville County Tournament 67 Central 71 Randolph Henry 68 Central 56 Brunswick 71 Tuck and Marshall control boards Marshall leaps high Big Dave pulls one down 90 Basketball Game, Win or Lose Basketball 93 69-70 Chargerettes From Row: Beckv Vlevers, Shelia Rea is. This new plan proved very successful. The marching band contained sixty-four playing members, four majorettes, and fourteen members of the color guard. New uniforms were designed for the majorettes, color guard, and the drum major and were made to match the band uniforms. The marching band, led by Vivian Rutledge, drum majorette, won five trophies and $325.00 in prize money. In addition to performing at football games and in area parades, the marching band was chosen to be a princess band at the Tobacco Festival. They also performed for a Hampden-Sydney football game and at the Annual Military Parade in Hopewell. The concert band performed for the schools and the public with a Christmas concert in December and a spring concert in April. They went to the District Band Festival in March and received a rating of excellent. Eleven members of this concert band participated in the all-regional band and many students won medals for their performances at the Solo and Ensemble Festival. Color Guard Band members proudly display eheeks received for placing first in parade competition in Farmville. 132 Organizations Majorettes Left to Right: Bonnie Walker.
