Jltarc i n j yla icf The events and actions of the Marching Band are vast. The band, comprised of instrumentalists, major- ettes, color guard, and precision drill team, performs at home and in numerous places throughout Virginia. They participated in all football games and were the guest band for the Blackstone parade and Homecom- ing. They performed in six parades, four of which were competitive. They won four trophies. One of the tro- phies went to the majorettes who have done an out- standingjob all year. The drill team worked as a part of the band and as a separate group performing drills and patterns that brought them much praise. The color guard received a complete overhaul this year. They marched with all new equipment and presented rou- tines with twirling flags and spinning sabres. The big- gest honor of the year came when the band was se- lected to compete in the Virginia Beach Music Festival against bands from all over the United States. The competition, to be held in June, includes a concert, parade, sight-reading, and marching exhibition. The band, in all endeavors, has tried to live up to its name— “The Pride of Central!” For his devoted service that he gave the band, John Smyth receives a special band award given to him by Miss McBride, the band director. 124
