CjxjaJUfctQ Q , II m 5 word and Shield 1969 WE ARE . “THE BUILDERS” . . . 2 We are architects of Fate, Working in these walls of Time . . . For the structure that we raise. Time is with materials filled; Our todays and yesterdays Are the blocks with which we build. Truly shape and fashion these; Leave no yawning gaps between; Think not, because no man sees. Such things will remain unseen. Let us do our work as well. Both the unseen and the seen . . . Else our lives are incomplete. Standing in these walls of Time, Broken stairways where the feet Stumble, as they seek to climb. Build today, then, strong and sure. With a firm and ample base; And ascending and secure Shall tomorrow find its place. —Henry Wadsworth Longfellow 3 Building (Just as a building represents hours of work and planning and much detailed con- struction, the 1968-69 Sword and Shield Foundation First Floor Glasses Seco nd Floor Spor s 4 Directory represents another year at Central with well- planned activities and strongly constructed memories for the students.) Seeking— character. We found a teacher who possesses a pleasing combination of all the fine qualities that make a person outstanding. Her personal integrity and broad vision have been a source of guidance and inspiration. She has had faith in us when we had no faith in ourselves. She has encouraged us when we have become lax in spirit. Her wonderful knack of working well with young people will serve as a goal for us to seek to accomplish in future years. 15 JAMES W. Under the very capable leadership of Coaches Griffith, Carnes, Conyers, and Roper, experience was gained in how to accept both victory and defeat with pride. Miss Joy King received the 1969 John Philip Sousa Band Award. Band Officers: Second Lieutenant; Diane Clement, Captain; Joy King, Honorary Captain; Gary William- son, First Lieutenant; Vivian Rut- ledge, Drum Majorette; Joan Jeter. 123 Jltarc i n j yla icf The events and actions of the Marching Band are vast. The band, comprised of instrumentalists, major- ettes, color guard, and precision drill team, performs at home and in numerous places throughout Virginia. They participated in all football games and were the guest band for the Blackstone parade and Homecom- ing. They performed in six parades, four of which were competitive. They won four trophies. One of the tro- phies went to the majorettes who have done an out- standingjob all year. The drill team worked as a part of the band and as a separate group performing drills and patterns that brought them much praise. The color guard received a complete overhaul this year. They marched with all new equipment and presented rou- tines with twirling flags and spinning sabres. The big- gest honor of the year came when the band was se- lected to compete in the Virginia Beach Music Festival against bands from all over the United States. The competition, to be held in June, includes a concert, parade, sight-reading, and marching exhibition. The band, in all endeavors, has tried to live up to its name— “The Pride of Central!” For his devoted service that he gave the band, John Smyth receives a special band award given to him by Miss McBride, the band director. 124 a Bonnie Walker, Katherine Smith, Vanessa Lovern, Susan Nichols Daphne Ashworth Joan Jeter Elizabeth Whittaker HEAD MAJORETTE 125 DRUM MAJORETTE SOLO MAJORETTE Ori I ' Deam Girls’ Precision Marching Drill Team perform at football games and parades.
