i 3ancf Much has been said and written about the Central High School Marching Band, Majorettes, Girls’ Preci- sion Marching Drill Team, and Color Guard, but the finest thing that can be said is that they are the “Pride of Central”. These three groups are the good-will am- bassadors and public-relations organizations for the school, and they have proudly carried the name of Central High School to many parts of the state. In July of 1967, Central’s marching units repre- sented the State of Virginia and the Lions Clubs of Virginia at the 50th International Lions Clubs Conven- tion in Chicago. They received the second place award in the convention parade competition that included marching units from many parts of the nation and the world. They were also engaged to represent the State of Virginia in the Evanston, Illinois, Fourth of July Celebration parade, and they received many compli- ments on their performances in both appearances. The Marching Band, Majorettes, Girls’ Precision Marching Drill Team, and Color Guard performed the halftime entertainment at the Charger’s football games and they also represented Central and Lunenburg County at the Christmas parades in the area. They were continually faced with the problem of having more invitations than they could possibly accept. These four units, each an outstanding unit in its own right, combine to form an unexcelled example of marching excellence and a fine representation of Central High School. BAND MANAGERS: Everett Winn, Burl Wingold, Cliff Sherffield, John Smith, Robbie Gage. 119
