The team, under the skillful guidance of head coach John Griffith and assistant coach Donald Carnes, finished the district in third place. This year’s team, lacking height, compensated for this deficiency by all out hustle and an overwhelming desire to win. The Chargers closed out the season fourth in the district with a record of 1 1 wins and 5 losses. The many hours of practice and hard work resulted in a fine season for the Chargers. Reggie Dunnavant, the team’s leading scorer was selected for both the All-District and All-Tournament Teams. The Charger’s co-captains Reggie Dunnavant and Charles Hankins did an outstanding job leading the team in a successful season. Since eight of the twelve members of this year’s team graduate, next year’s season will be one of rebuilding. However, the skill of the frequently substituted Juniors and Sophomores will surely provide a winning season next year. NOT PICTURED; Martha Johnson, Secretary. The Central Junior Tri-Hi-Y was organized for the first time this year. This group of eighth, ninth, and tenth grade girls worked hard through- out the year, guided by hardworking officers and a faithful sponsor. At Christmas the members remembered the soldiers in Viet Nam with cards. The club also helped the SCA raise money for the curtain fund by selling candy at basketball games. The climax of the year came when the club spent the day at Staunton River Park on a picnic. All in all the first year for the Junior Tri-Hi-Y of Central High School was both pros- perous and rewarding. These two organizations pre- sented concerts together during the year, and they performed at special school functions such as the dedication of the building and graduation. Selected members of these two organizations are chosen to represent Central High School at the various district and state musical functions. Central was hon- ored to have had nine students accepted for the District All-Regional Concert Band and six students a accepted for the All-Regional Workshop Band. These students were chosen from among all the students in District III through a series of competitive auditions. Central was also honored by having six students chosen for the All-Regional Senior Choir, and five students chosen for the All-Regional Junior Chorus. Charles Hankins and Jeanette Green received singu- lar honors in being chosen to be members of the 1968 All-Virginia Band. To have two students chosen for this band, which is made up of the finest musicians in the State of Virginia, is indeed an honor for any school. The Concert Wind Ensemble (pictured above) and the Concert Chorus (pictured on preceding page) are two very fine performing ensembles in their own rights. Their concerts have provided the very finest in musical entertainment and excellence for the people of Lunenburg County, the students of schools in surrounding areas, and the students at Central High School. Much hard work goes with being a member of one of these organizations, and many long and hard hours go into one of their presentations. Central can justly be proud of these two excellent groups. These three groups are the good-will am- bassadors and public-relations organizations for the school, and they have proudly carried the name of Central High School to many parts of the state. In July of 1967, Central’s marching units repre- sented the State of Virginia and the Lions Clubs of Virginia at the 50th International Lions Clubs Conven- tion in Chicago. They received the second place award in the convention parade competition that included marching units from many parts of the nation and the world. They were also engaged to represent the State of Virginia in the Evanston, Illinois, Fourth of July Celebration parade, and they received many compli- ments on their performances in both appearances. The Marching Band, Majorettes, Girls’ Precision Marching Drill Team, and Color Guard performed the halftime entertainment at the Charger’s football games and they also represented Central and Lunenburg County at the Christmas parades in the area. They were continually faced with the problem of having more invitations than they could possibly accept. These four units, each an outstanding unit in its own right, combine to form an unexcelled example of marching excellence and a fine representation of Central High School.
