Cflncf Or OJecun , { { The outstanding success of the Central High School marching and concert bands this year has been due largely to the tireless efforts of its director. Mr. Roger K. Maier not only is a talented musician himself, but willingly directs his abilities toward a goal of musical proficiency in each band member. As a result of his sincere interest in the individual student and his devotion to duty as a band director, Mr. Maier has set this year a precedent for musical excellence that Central High School bands of the future may be proud to follow. Outstanding JtTe inters Charles Hankins receives John Philip Sousa Band Award. The Central High School Concert Band is known for its excellent musical performances. This year the concert band was awarded a Superior rating in Grade V music at the District I-III Instrumental festival, and this superior rating was very evident in the concerts that they presented to the public. Thirteen band members were chosen to participate in the All-Regional Bands, with six in the Concert Band and seven in the Workshop Band. Jeanette Green was chosen as the first alternate for the bass clarinet section for the All-Virginia Band. With individuals such as these, and the other members who work so hard, it is easy to see why we have a Superior concert band. All-Regional Concert Band: (Top) Charles Hankins, Roger Pendergrass, Andrew Slu- iter. (Bottom) Jeanette Green, Reggie Dun- navant, Dianne Jones. 107
