Under the guidance of head coach John Griffith and assist- ant coach Donald Carnes, the Chargers won their last six games, good for third place in the district. The Chargers featured a wide open offense and an extremely stingy defense, particularly on the ground. Toward the end of the season it was known throughout the district that the Chargers were one of the strongest football teams in the district. Central was very proud to have two of their players named to the All- District team. They were Butch Brame, the pass catching right-end, and Calvin Sharpe, the bruising fullback. The Chargers com- bined a pressing defense and a fast-moving offense to win eight of their last nine games and finish in a tie with Brunswick for fourth place in the district, with a record of 11 wins and only 5 losses. The Chargers completed a fine season which saw Ed DuPriest make All-District, and Reggie Dunna- vant and DuPriest selected to the All-Tournament team. But all the scur- rying and rushing would not have produced a pictorial annual without the help of Mr. Jimmy Gee, our flashing photographer. As the deadline arrived and material was sent to the publisher, the staff had fond hopes that the 1967 SWORD AND SHIELD would be the impressive example by which many more Central Annuals would follow. The S.C.A. was organized this year as a planning council to organize future activi- ties in the school. The council elected Cas- sandra Wilkes to serve as president and Di- ane Jones to serve as secretary. Because the S.C.A. Council has worked hard as a planning- organization, they are proud of their accom- plishments. The main event of the year was the writing and ratification of an S. C. A. Constitution. The S. C. A. sponsored a Christ- mas assembly and was proud to decorate the first Christmas tree at Central. The first successful year was climaxed with the elec- tion and installation of new officers for the coming year. Now all we have to do is wait for Santa! Ready at the polls. 94 JKc aeon 7 . Be- cause so many girls were interested in joining the club, it was divided into the Senior Tri- Hi-Y, grades 11 and 12, and the Junior Tri-Hi- Y, grades 8-10. The Tri-Hi-Y has been very active during the school year doing such proj- ects as observing YMCA Week, helping a needy family during Christmas, having bake sales and selling pens to raise money to send delegates to MGA, having a “clean-up cam- paign”, and contributing money to the World Service. This group of Christian girls has cer- tainly been a credit to Central this year. Martee Buchanan and Sara Austin — Delegates to Girls wait for sound of gavel to begin meeting. New shop facilities keep the boys busy! 101 State Forestry Winners 1966 T ep GfuS CAt orus The Central High School Chorus completed its first year by helping to continue the standard of musical excellence at Central. The Chorus presented the Christmas and Spring concerts with the concert band, and it was invited to take part in the Spring musical sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. The chorus received a Good rating at the Choral Festival this year, and the members delighted the aud- iences that heard them everywhere with their fine musical presentations. OFFICERS: Pat Crymes, President; Frances Vaughan, V-P; A1 Vaughan, Sec.; Jane Tucker, Treas. 103 “Put some feeling into it!” Centra] High School can well be proud of its band, drill team, and majorettes. This year they performed excellent pre-game and half- time shows at all but one of the Charger’s games, and their precision marching and rous- ing music earned them high praise wherever they went. Representing Central High School and Lunenburg County, they traveled to many parades in various parts of the state, and re- ceived trophies and praise for their efforts. They took part in the University of Virginia Band Day festivities at Charlottesville, and, as a fitting tribute to their excellence, they were chosen to travel to Chicago in July to represent the Lions Clubs of Virginia and the state of Virginia at the International Lions Clubs Convention. They were chosen over many other bands throughout the state, and this was indeed quite an honor. The Girls’ Precision Marching Drill Team is one of the absolute finest in the state, and our majorette squad is known for its excellent performances. Many long and hard hours of practice go into producing the excellent results that have come to be standard procedure with these groups, and the Central High School students and faculty can well be proud of the Central High School Marching Band, Girls’ Precision Drill Team and Majorettes. 104 Cflncf Or OJecun , { { The outstanding success of the Central High School marching and concert bands this year has been due largely to the tireless efforts of its director. Mr. Roger K. Maier not only is a talented musician himself, but willingly directs his abilities toward a goal of musical proficiency in each band member. As a result of his sincere interest in the individual student and his devotion to duty as a band director, Mr. Maier has set this year a precedent for musical excellence that Central High School bands of the future may be proud to follow. The Central High School Concert Band is known for its excellent musical performances. This year the concert band was awarded a Superior rating in Grade V music at the District I-III Instrumental festival, and this superior rating was very evident in the concerts that they presented to the public. Thirteen band members were chosen to participate in the All-Regional Bands, with six in the Concert Band and seven in the Workshop Band. Jeanette Green was chosen as the first alternate for the bass clarinet section for the All-Virginia Band. With individuals such as these, and the other members who work so hard, it is easy to see why we have a Superior concert band. National Cheerlead- ing Camp at Virginia Beach was attended by six members of the squad. Ribbons were won in daily competition, and the week was cli- maxed by winning the “SPIRIT STICK”— an award presented to the squad in the Medium Group Division that showed the most spirit during the week. Many skits and pep rallies presented by the girls helped to spark the Charger teams to victory.
