BARR Principal fix' MR. A. B, JORDAN AS.S1-SILIIYI Prz'm'1'pal FROM MR. BARR It takes the combined efforts of many people to carry on an important en- terprise such as maintaining a successful metropolitan high school. Through the combined efforts of the students, faculty members, and administrators, Central High School has, during the present year, achieved a measure of success of which we may all be justly proud. We can be justly proud of our participation in such community efforts as the tax campaign. school enumeration, and the bond elec- tion, to which both students and the entire school staff contributed by giving generously of their time and talents. We can be especially proud of the way our school has carried out the in- tegration program. This was due to the splendid spirit shown by all our stu- dents both new and old The outstandin success of the ro ram is evidence - - S P 8 also that it was well thought out and prepared for. The accomplishments of the current year presage the ongoing success dur- ing its second century of this great school. FROM MR. WELD FROM MR. JORDAN Two of the happiest years of my rather long teaching career were spent out in Portable 2 with classes in Biology and General Science. Mr. Douglass and Mr. Weir were principals at that time. My return to Central High School. as As- sistant Principal, has been very interesting and most pleasant. The misfortune of having to lose several weeks this year while I was in the hospital revealed again to me the friendliness of the Central faculty, the pupils, and the par- ent's organizations. While I have not become very well acquaint- ed with the seniors in this year's graduating class, I am looking forward, with much pleasure, to working with the pupils of this fine school. Wm. T. Weld Miss Maeta Wentz Hello! - Good Bye! and Good Luck. We have spent one year together at Central -There have been many experiences we have shared. I believe and hope all of us are wiser, happier and more loyal to Central as the result of hav- ing worked together. After the glamour of Class Day--Ribbon- Prom and Graduation are gone-then begins the real test-did Central serve you well-in- spire you? Did you take advantage of your opportunities? You will then discover you owe Central much-Repay her-Be loyal--Be Friendly- Be Helpful-Be Honest. Remember "There will always be a Central High School" if you are all of these, A. B. BASEBALL 1954 By Bob Burling Although the baseball season of 1954 did not show many games won in the City Public League, the team won all of its games in the State District Tournament, and placed among the sixteen schools that qualified for the State Finals. In league play, the Redwings played fourteen games, winning three and losing eleven. They won two games from Cleveland by scores of 19-2 and 6-5. They also defeated Soldan- Blewett by a 5-4 score. Showing the spirit that drove the '50, '51, and '52 teams to the state championship, Central swept to victory in its first three state contests. They whipped Beau- mont 110 to 81. De Andreis 17 to 41, and Country Day 11 1 to 51. ln the regional finals we lost to Central of Cape Girardeau in a close- ly contested game. Lettermen on the team were: Bob Busby, Rich Buschart, Les Bushmann, Tom Carroll, Edgar Chambers, Eugene Diers, Don Dubowski, Ed Gambill, Bob Griner, Don Kahre, Mike Moran, Art Moser, Bob Panosh. Bill Root, George Viviano, Charles Walters, and Bob Burling, Manager. Twelve of these letter- men are returning for the 1955 season. FOOTBALL 1954 By Dave Grewe The Football Season of 1954 was one of the most successful in recent Central history. ln league play the team was defeated only by Beaumont and Roosevelt. They defeated South- west 121 to 71,1VlCKinley 121 to 71, and Soldan-Blewett 114 to 131, The Cleveland game resulted in a 13-13 tie. In non-league contests the team won from Laboure. but lost to Ferguson and McBride. Those awarded letters were Art Moser. Mike Moran, Fred Paubel, Ern- est Fields. Ray Eickmeyer, Fred Anders, Don Mason, George Viviano, Bob Tompkins, Fred Ryan, Les Bushman, Gene Choate, Ed Gambill, Don Kahre, Tony Lopiparo, Charles Morgan, Bill Root, and Perry Newman. ln B-team Football, those awarded letters were Robert Adams, Ed Baell, Lawrence Bratch- er, Jerry Davis, Richard A. George Paubel, John Pendleton, Jim Rose, Gary Schnur, Fred Schueler. John Clay Smith, Charl- es Walters, Robert Watson, and Eugene M. Wil- liams. TENNIS 1954-55 By Al Holtmann The 1954-55 tennis season was one of the most successful Central has ever had. The team finished in second place in league standing al- though they had to default in second doubles. ln the State Tournament we again won the singles championship. becoming the only school to win this title four times. XVallace Gundlach I1 won it in 1948, and Al 1-loltmann won it in '52, '53, and '54. 1-le also took the Coun- try Day singles title in '53 and '54. Coach Gundlach has again entered the boys in the 1955 Country Day Tournament, and they should make a good showing. lncidentally, Holtmann won the National Indoor Boys' Championship held during the Christmas vacation. Five letters were awarded this year. The boys who earned them were: Al 1-loltmann, BASKli'1'BAl.1. VARSITY Crach: Mr. Carlisle first singles: Don Mana, second singles: Dick Walsh, third singles: Jack Braun and Ken Kas- telic, first doubles. BASKETBALL 1954-55 By Rich Buschart As the last game ended in the 1954-55 bas- ketball season. the Central Redwings showed great promise for next year by defeating such teams as C.B.C., Hadley, Riverview Gardens. and others. Central did this with probably the youngest and most inexperienced team around, for no boys except two were over term six. These were captain Gene Choate and co- captain Gene Brunk. The Redwings proved their ability this year in the State Regional. Central was matched against a tall Hadley team for their first game. Hadley had over-powering height over the Redwings but Central had something over Had- ley. speed and a fast break which consists of getting the ball back to the opponent's goal before they can set up their defense. This along with shooting accuracy proved to be successful. Vv'hen the game ended the score was: Central 56, Hadley 54. Central had the honor of playing --and winning-the first game in the new Hadley gym. Central was matched against Wellston in the Normandy Tournament. Cen- tral won its first game against Wellston, but lacking that ever important height could go no farther. In the DeAndreis Tournament the Redwings were again underdogs. This time they were matched against St. Marys, the Catholic Con- ference Champions. St. Marys was favored to double the score on the Redwings, but when the buzzer rang ending the game the score was tied. After an over-time, Central was edged out by three points. This proves that Central can win basketball games and will continue to do so next season and many after that. Next year the Redwings will have 10 return- ing lettermen. They are: Bill Poole, George Viviano, Fred Paubel, Mel Vahrenhorst, Bill Jones, Ernest Fields, Don Skelly, Mike Moran. Bob Murdock, and Rich Bushart. SVJIMMING 1954-55 By Don Dubowski The 1954-55 swimming season was a truly successful one. The Central Tankmen won the championship of the city Public High School League. under the coaching of Mr. Ray Cliffe. They also finished sixth in state competi- tion among a total of twenty-three schools. The meet with Hadley was probably the cli- max ofthe season. In order to win, the Central team had to take the two final events. They were the 150 yard medley relay and the 200 yard free style relay. They not only won them: they set new records in both them. Smith, Morgan, and Wil- lis swam the 150 yard medley in lf50.3, while Freebersyser, Bushmann, Goelich, and Mana set their time at l:25.4 in the 200 yard free style event. In the Public High League the team was un- defeated, winning all of their eight matches. The scores were as follows: Central 41 - Cleveland 36. Central 56 - Beaumont 21. Central 57 - McKinley 20. Central 52 yg - Soldan-Blewett 2416. Central 43 - Hadley 34. Central 9 - Sumner 0. Central 62 - Vashon 14. Central 45 - Roosevelt 32. Letters and medals were awarded to the following boys: Rodney Davidson. Larry Smith, Howard Bittick, Don Mana, Charles Morgan, Bill Freesbersyser, Jim Bittick, Roland Goelich, Charles Richardson, Dave Jones, Gene Moss, Jack Barrett, Bob Willis, Bob Andre. and Rudolph Arnold. Medals were given to Rich Norvell, Bob Tompkins, Ray Straedey, William Ferie, Don O'Brien, and Les Bushmann. Conditional letters went to Ed Gamber, Don Lamm, Frank McGuire, and Dave Mullane.
