Y ounts Presenting The Spartan 1961 Volume IV Central High School Lexington, North Carolina We, the Senior Class of 1961, in order to express to you our appreciation and thankfulness for what you have done for our class and our school, do sincerely dedicate this, the 1961 edition of the SPARTAN to you, MISS BUIE. We could never fully express what you have meant to each of us. We shall never forget the many times you have so willingly helped us in our work and given us valuable advice . Your untiring efforts to make our library the very best tell us that you want only the best available for our students. May we say again that we appreciate everything you have done for us and for Central High School. 2 Dedication Foreword We of the annual staff present this 196 1 SPARTAN to you with the hope that in these pages you will see reflected some of the phases of high school life which combine to make Central more than a school— a place of preparation, of developing leadership, of making friends, of serving others. Although time is something one can never actu- ally bring back, we have attempted to use as many words and pictures as possible trusting that, with the aid of this book, time will not erase completely the memories of the year 1960- ' 61 at Central. The annual staff would like to express our thanks to Judy- He drick. Judy has been a cheerleader for four years and has been chief cheerleader for the past two years. She has led the school with spirit in defeat and victory. Many times when our spirits were low Judy and the cheerleaders came through and gave us the extra spirit we needed to win. Thanks again, Judy. We would also like to say a few words about the cheerlead- ers. Without them backing Judy, we would have no yells or spirit. As someone has said, Behind every leader there ' s a force . This certainly holds true with our cheerleaders. I agree with you, but you ' re wrong. 99 Do you remember our Senior year? At last we were the important ones; everyone looked to us for strength and leadership. We were the football and basketball heroes, the school officers, and the club leaders. This was the year we entered the auditorium while the underclassmen rendered us homage by standing at their seats until we were seated. We had a wonderful time, but we learned many things which were of value to us. Some of our classmates were inducted into the National Honor Society. Our Senior year was a time of finality. This year brought with it the last homecoming games, the last foot- ball game, the last high school exams, the last time that this same group, which had laughed and cried together, would be a class. We eagerly anticipated our graduation night, but during those final moments with our classmates, friends, and teachers, the whole parade of events passed before us in our minds. Outwardly, we were giddy and jubilant, but inside, there was a swelling of sad emotion. It was all over. With suppressed mist upon our eyes, we said adieu, and with lagging steps we walked before the audience of parents and friends to receive our diplomas, armed with devotion and pride for our teachers and for Central. This was the end— when we were handed our diplomas, it was goodbye Central. Class Flower Class Colors Blue and White Class Motto Not for ourselves, but for all. Not only have you given us school time, but also your own personal time to help us be better citizens of today and tomorrow .We truly appreci- ate everything you have done for us, but most of all we are grateful for the leadership you have assumed in making Central a school we can all be proud of. J.R. BRENDELL, JR. Principal MRS. C.A. MICHAEL Secretary To Mrs. Michael, our capable secretary, we ex- press our many thanks and appreciation. She has always been here with a helping hand when we needed one, especially in getting our supplies to keep us going through the day. We could not record all of the events that have taken place this year even though we would like to. We do hope that you like what we have presented. We could not have completed this book without giving credit to the other members of the SPARTAN staff. Without their help and willing assistance, it would have been impossible for us to carry out our jobs. We owe much to our advisor for his interest, concern, and help. We sincerely hope that this SPARTAN is one you will be proud of when you look at it in the years to come as your memory of Central begins to fade. ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY J.R. BRENDELL MRS. C.A.
