She is glad to listen to a students problem and to try to counsel him wisely. Her teachings leave an everlasting impression on her students, many of whom seek and accept her advice. She is an inspiration to all who come into contact with her. When we think of a kind, hard-working, and unsung heroine who never seeks publicity for her good deeds, she stands at the head of our list. Two separate orders were made for the ,52 rings. The hrst order was received in the fall, the second, in the spring. The l952 ring is made of ten-carat gold and has a blue stone. An early fumble in the first quarter set Central in a big hole and left Tech knocking on their five yard line, but a spirited defensive stand kept Tech from scoring on fourth down. The rest of the first half was slow with both teams trying to find themselves. ln the fading minutes of the third quarter, the Wildcats started a drive on the Tech 46-yard line, which later developed into the lone and winning touchdown of the game. Tony Frantz, Dickie Mattison, and Richard Hinson sparked the drive with I-linson hulling his way over from the four for the tally. CENTRAL O-DURHAM 30 With the aid of four unearned touchdowns, due to Central fumbles, the Durham Bulldogs had an easy night disposing of the uncertain Central Wildcats. Central's only threat came late in the game when a penalty against Durham set the ball back on the Bulldog three yard line and gave Central a golden scoring opportunity, but a bad pass from center and a fumble at this point ended the threat. Although Central netted only 46 yards rushing, there were still several standouts in the line including Oliver Garner and Bobby Redd who both played excellent games. Tom Hayes and Bobby Gunn also played good games in the backfield. CENTRAL O-ROCKY MOUNT 42 At the hands of a speedy, deceptive Rocky Mount eleven, the still green YNildcats suffered their worst defeat since 1943. In the early minutes of play the visitors capitalized on a blocked Central punt for their first touchdown. Later in the game Central tried desperately to pull themselves together behind the passing of quarterback Tom Hayes and the running of Bobby Gunn and Richard 1-linson, but they could make no headway against Rocky MOunt's alert defensive unit. Statistics later showed Rocky Mount the superior team in every department as they rolled up a final score of 42-O. CENTRAL 0-BALTIMORE 13 ln a driving rain a powerful Baltimore eleven ran their first scrimmage play 63 yards to score against the scrappy Wildcats. From that point until midway of the last quarter, it was give and take, with both teams having Ogensive difficulties due to the mud. Then Baltimore took a bad punt on the Central 21- yard line and drove to the tally. In the final minutes of the game, the Cats blocked a scoring threat which ended on their 3-yard line, holding the Maryland State Champs to a 13-0 win. Taking nothing and giving all they had, the 'Cats showed a spirit hereto unequalled. With Bobby Gunn's brilliant running and pass receiving and Dickie Mattison tearing up the Greensboro defensive line, the teams retired at half time in a 7-7 deadlock. lt was Gunn again in the second half, who sparked the team and personally scored the winning touchdown. This game finally put Central back in the win column after losing three previous games. Except for two touchdowns scored by the Gastonians, the first half was mostly a defensive struggle. Central never got the ball past the Gastonia 3Oavard line. ' , In the second half the Hred-up Vllildcats managed to get the ball inside the Gastonia ten-yard line several times, but never had the punch to penetrate the strong Gastonia forward wall any farther. The only Central score came late in the third period when Dickie Mattison led them to the' tallv with his hne run- ning plays. Again in the fading minutes of the game, Frantz and Mattison led the team to a near-touchdown, but this time the clock ran out and Gastonia took the game, 13-7. CENTRAL 19-ASHEVILLE 14 After being behind for most of the first half, Central came back to tie a hard fighting Asheville eleven and the score was 7-7, at intermission. Dickie Mattison scored the touchdown for Central as he drove off tackle and went over standing up, Central finally took the lead in the third quarter when big Bobby Redd broke through and blocked an Asheville punt. A few plays later it was Mattison again who went off tackle for the score. Asheville, still trying desperately, managed to tie it up once more in the last quarter, but Central was not to be denied a victory. After Bill Flake recovered an Asheville fumble, Mattison wrapped up the night's scoring honors when he tallied for the third time. giving Central the game. CENTRAL 18-I-HGH POINT 13 The spectators at this game had little hope for Central after the Hrst ten minutes of play. With High Point scoring on two spectacular plays covering 89 and 78 yards respectively and setting Central back by two touchdowns, the outlook seemed dark. ln one of the wildest second quarters ever played in Memorial Stadium, however, the spirited Wildcat eleven ran over three successive touchdowns to take the lead. Content to leave things as they stood, Central decided to play a defensive game the second half as they stopped the High Pointer from scoring again. The rest of the game went scoreless. The backtield standouts in Central's great comeback included Dickie Mattison, who scored twice, and Tony Frantz, who scored the vital winning touchdown. CENTRAL 04BURLINGTON 7 VVith nine minutes left to play in the game, a freak pass play which covered more than fifty yards gave Burlington a shaky 7-O win over Central. The VVildcats made their most serious threat in the opening minutes of the game when they drove to the Burlington eight-yard line, but hindered by a wet slippery field and a spirited goal line stand by Burlington, they were unable to go any farther. It was again the combination of Frantz, Hayes. and Mattison that sparked Central! offensive play. lX'luch credit is also due the VVildcat forward wall. which prevented Burlington from scoring on the ground. Standouts here included Bobby Redd and Bill Flake, who made many tackles throughout the evening. CENTRAL 7-WINSTON-SALEM 0 Using a three man line and playing inspired football, the Central Wildcats pulled one of the biggest upsets in conference history, as they beat highly favored Reynolds High of VVinston- Salem. Completely bafHing their opponents with a special defense set up by Coach George Sparger, the Central line played brilliantly as it held the powerful Reynolds offense scoreless for the entire game. The big chance came for Central in the last period. and they didn't fail to make good on it. A pass taken by Bill Calvert on the Reynolds 27-yard line was followed by two running plays, which carried the ball down to the 15-yard line and put Central in a scoring position. From here Dickie Mattison Ekirted end for the remaining yardage and the winning touch- own. CENTRAL BWI-IARDING O A warm Thanksgiving afternoon and a large cheering crowd saw Central win its sweetest victory of the year, as their cross- town rival, Harding High, went down in defeat, 13-O. Both teams, playing brilliant defensive football in the first half, failed to score. About midway of the third reriod, Harding almost took the lead, but a fumble, deep in Central territory, cost them dearly. Central finally took the lead toward the end of the period when Tom Hayes passed to Toe Townsend in the end zone for the touchdown. Tentative matches so far include Greensboro, Salisbury, Spartan- burg, and Greenville, all of which are loaded with prep talent. Heading Central's team this year will be Bobby Sisk who has been considered the state's outstanding high school Star for the past several years. Bobby has held many titles including the North and South Carolina State High School Championship, which is Played annually at Greenville, S. C. Also there's long-hitting Eric Jonas, who thinks nothing of breaking par and Carter Terrell, who was runner-up last summer for the North Carolina boy's championship. Rounding out the first four will Probably be Hobby Cobb, a newcomer to the team, who has a fine state and local record. The second team will include Bob Dillard, Cal Mitchell, Larry Parrott, and Charles Furman. Each of these also have good records and can be counted on to shoot good golf. The entire team is expected to open the season at Greenville in early April where they will compete for North and South Carolina state team honors. I V lf' w Centrals track team opened the 1952 season by showing well in the indoor meet at Chapel Hill, March lst. Prospects were promising, particularly on the track side, for the thirty-man squad ably led by Coaches Leslie Outterson, and Bill Ball and managed by Mike Edwards. Fourteen members of last years championship squad re- turned, but the outstanding performances of the three Hs-Hudson, Huffaker, and Hovis-will be greatly missed. Returning were Co-Captains Desmond Marsh, out- standing sprinter, and Bill Logan, expected to retain his state pole vault title. Much was expected also from Archie Joyner, Richard Massey, Ed Fuller, Dick Prather, Bill Calvert, and many others. The team had an admirable record to live up to, having sustained no defeats on the home track since 1948, and having placed second in the state meets in 1947 and 1951. They were also last year's Weste1'n Conference champs, and ran up a record of 565 1f12 points. Meets with Anderson, S. C., Spartanburg, S. C., and Rock Hill, S. I proceeded immediately to Old Man Nose's secret laboratory, and after followinig certain instructions I was put to sleep, and my brain sent ree ing twenty years into the future. My first vision was of three figures whom I soon reco nized as Al Ansley, Dick Nixon, and Lloyd Walter. The fiellows looked swell, even if they were barefooted. They always were terrific shoe salesmen. Next a race track came into view. The list of riders revealed some familiar names. It seems that Betty Lee Rogers, Ioan Palmer, and Pat Riley have broken into the pro ranks and won the first three races. Beth Nuckolls is giving the girls a hard fight for top money winnings of the year. Donald Knell out-rode Erastus Doughton to win the fifth race. Erastus was picked to win, but he was small that his horse, thinking that he had lost his rider, stopped half way around and went up in the stands to watch the rest of the race. Leaving the track, I picked up a newspaper at a newsstand run by Bob Dillard and Ted Kemp. They boasted the most complete collection of comic books in the world. The first article to catch my eye was one concerning a wild iungle-bunny hunt to South Africa, being conducted by Charles Furman, Dick Adams, Willie Alexander, and Thorny Gutherzl. The boys were e uipped with fine sling-shots and butter ly nets. and expected profitable results. Turning the page, I noticed a theater billing featuring the comedy team of Minogue and Overman, the nineteen seventy- two versions of Martin and Lewis. They were making quite a hit. Eddie Bernstein and Dick Barnhardt were also on the bill as a black face vaudeville team. According to the reviews, their act had gone from bad to worse, and the boys weren't eating too well. They were getting awfully thin, and the act was about to fold. One night during a tap dance number, Eddie's pants fell down, displaying his long red flannels. The crowd went wild and so did Eddie. Glancing over the rest of the paper, I noticed many interest- ing items and advertisements . . . one ad in particular for an organization known as the C.H.j.C.E.D.F.B.P.A.I. Reading on, I discovered that it was the Cobb, Hanks, and Jonas Clinic for the Encouragement and Development of Future Basketball Players of America Incorporated. Those boys iust can't stand to give up the game. Another ad dealt with the Whatcha Hurry Dance Studio, with Harry Brownlee and Gloria Miller billed as the instructors. The names of quite a few old friends turned up in other articles such as the admittance of Gene Holston and Bobby Foote to the nationally famous Fat Boys Club, and the retirement of Bob Gunn, Richard Hinson and Henry Boyd from five successful years of pro football. I cast my paper aside as a large building, an arena, came into view. It was Monday night, and the wrestling matches were about to begin. The guest of the evening, a famous opera star whom I recognized as Gwynn Moose, had just sung the National Anthem, and the main event was about to begin. It featured a tag-team match with Earth Quake Harris and Don Killer Connell against Bill Curly Calvert and Man-Mountain Kennerly. I got near the ring and asked one of the seconds why there was no canvas on the ring. He replied that the last time these fellows fought it was so rough and so long, they got hungry and ate it. I handed him my roll of tums and left. At this moment, however. my time was up, and after awaken- ing and paying my respects to the old man, I started out the door. Half way out, I bumped into my friend, Yulan Washburn, who had just gotten wind of the secret laboratory Crt was located in a horse bamD and followed his nose to the spot. After a word or two, I headed for home, wondering what strange sights he would see. Yulan Washburn. the noted, outstanding, .superlative i0Ll1'11HI list, immediately entered the barn to confer with Ol Man Nose. He was disappointed, for Lawing had smelled up everything in Page One Hundred Thirty the place, and the only scent left wasn't fit to use? As Washburng turned to leave the place, his attention was arrested by a paper. It was something Lawing had pilfered while in the future. It was an article from the january issue of Life Magazine, then owned and published by A1 Moreau, and written by the great columnist, Bill Wortman. It summed up the happenings of the past year, 1981. It read: Senator Ioanne Duckworth's Investigation Committee made headlines in its efforts to delve into corruption and crime in America. It brought up for questioning such arch-criminals as Sue Deaton, nationally known bookie, Robert Litaker, alleged fix-man of basketball games, and Jerry Morris, suspected head of an international crime machine known as the Syndicate Also brought up were several athletes, Des Marsh, Don Lyerly, and Louis Nathanson, convicted of slicing points in tiddly-winks matches. Then the public got a glimpse of mystery man Larry Mayfield, whose gun-moll wife, Mona Irvin, has six mink coatsf In the sporting world, the University of North Carolinaf under Coach F. P. Wright, was named top football team in the nation, while Coach Dick Prather was tagged as coach of the year. The sports world saw its sensations too, when the Bradley team, led by Captain Willie Spong, who seems somehow to have escaped the four-year ruling. came onto the court with a kangaroo as center. Commissioner of Athletics Archie Tsangarides7 main- tained it was legalf' since the kangaroo was taking a course in agriculture. A sensational murder casem gained headlines for detectives Mike Soper and Carl Williams. They arrived at a rooming house in the slums to find a man who had been poisoned, stabbed, shot, and strangled? With the help of F.B.I. Chief John Seiden- stricker, the murder was solved.l2 A list of the top income tax payers in the year revealed that Carol Smithw was the top earner, netting for himself over twelve million dollars CflS54O.22 after taxesl'D. Van Trapp also made a pilelf' for himself by going West, becoming the foreman on C. W. Brown's schmoo ranch, and throwing a long rope to rustle himself a herd of schmoos. Sheriffess Nancy Broome tried to nab him, but when she couldn't, she married himfm' From across the water, news was received from the country of Xz grophytezll that Doris Gribble and Nancy Carpenter had been exilled for trying to institute a branch service of Alcoholics Anonymousfg Micky Kimbrell's recipe for roast chinchillam won first place in Arthur Godfrey's cooking contest. Betty Zeigler bedecked in a bathing suit with a French accent, walked away with high honors? before some fifty judges. Broadway saw the opening of several bright new hits, but the biggest crowd-pleaser was a play written by the team of Dickie Calvin and Dickie Jordan. It was entitled Hamlet. It starred jimmy Turner in the title role, Phyllis Bolick in the female lead, and members of the all-star cast included Dolly Brock. as Poloniusfl Peggy Ballard, as the Queen, and Carter Cook as the man who pulled down the curtain. Also in the news were Gopher and Mouse Parrottfn We won't say for what. Suddenly things grew light again, and I stood in reality with Ol' Man Nose. HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1952 So you went to Central High Schoolln my travelling companion ex- claimed, noticing the senior ring on my finger. I lived in North Carolina, and back in those days we usecl to hear a lot about Central. It must have been a wonderful school. You're asking for it, stranger, I replied. You had better settle back in that deck chair and relax, because I can talk about Central from now until we reach our destination. Removing my ring and handing it to him to examine, I said, That engraving of the front of the building really brings back memories. And those traditional weeping willow trees characterized Central in my mind even before I went there. That hal- lowed institution always overstuffed with laughing, chattering students has a place of its own in the hearts of all its graduates. Then, forgetting my listener and losing myself in reverie, I continued. In September 1949 about four hundred of us trembling, frightened creatures, the upperclassmen scomfully labeled Sophs, hit Central. The characters standing around in front of the Maid across the street nearly scared some of us back to Piedmont and A.G. But what would we have done that first day without those older Centralites who helped us find our way when we got lost going from locker room to home room? Realizing that we were here to stay, they finally accepted our presenceg we stuck it out and before long began to like it. VVe elected Mark Johnson, Tony Frantz, David Shaw and Joe Townsend to be our first semester sophomore class oHicers. The second half of the year Dick Barnhardt, Bill Calvert, Claire Plintom, and Nancy Carpenter were chosen to be our leaders. In the middle of the year Student Council elections came up and Walter Propst, Patricia Moeller, George Robinson, and Sylvia Davis replaced Tommy Dulin, Ann Ritch, Danny Michaels, and Slug Claiborne in office. That was the year of the first international football game when we entertained our Latin American friends from down Mexico way. The Spanish students made practical use of their knowledge, while the ad- vantages and disadvantages of football and bulliighting were discussed. Then came the Vilomanless Wedding in which Hank Kistler said I do to Erastus Doughton, and a score or more boys nobly sacrificed their masculine pride to become I-Iank's bridesmaids. In the Variety Show much hidden Central talent was unearthed, and much money was made for the Student Council. Our sides still ache from the laughter and hilarity which prevailed at the student-faculty basketball game. None of us will ever forget Miss Markham in her long bloomer shorts and middy blouse, ball under arm, dashing down the basketball court and accidentally scoring for the faculty team! Then we were juniors! How proud we all felt as we looked at a new batch of eager sophomores and thought of our advanced age and ex- perience. Miss MacManus elevated our egos considerably by inserting into her many lectures the pleasant phrase, Now Juniors! We elected as president, Eric Ionas, then Hobby Cobb to guide us through two semesters. Other junior class officers were Nancy Carpenter, Sylvia Davis, Bobby Redd, Claire Flintom, and Ioan Purser. That year the Student Council found a new way to increase its funds. The gym and basement rooms were converted into hundreds of exciting booths, and all Central Went to the carnival. There were shooting gal- leries, fortune tellers, hot dog stands, and laughs for all. The Dramatics Club, with apologies to Mr. Shakespeare, presented a modem version of Julius Caesar. Instead of stabbing the mighty Emperor, Brutus pulled out his pistol and filled him full of lead! Et tu, Brute? Mary Bradly was chairman of a committee organized to fight dishonesty at Central. There were discussions, special assemblies, and home room devotionals which combined in the effort to promote honesty on the part of the students. We faced the realization that we were obligated to our- selves, our fellow students, and to God to be honest. That year the Christmas assembly presented by the advanced Bible class was one of Central's best. It made us want to celebrate Christmas in the right way. This group also presented outstanding assemblies of a spiritual nature at Thanksgiving and Easter. Danny Michaels, Tom Shaw, Flowe Rodgers, and Dick Barnhardt were first semester Student Council of!-icersg and, after mid-year elections, Slug Claiborne, Pat Alford, Sylvia Davis, and Lacy Keesler took their places. The years were passing faster and faster. We suddenly found ourselves with rings on our fingers and college plans in our heads-Seniors! Modern fluorescent lighting was installed, and the gymnasium underwent a com- plete rehabilitation. Some members of our class had left Central for Myers Park, the new high school. Mr. Anderson replaced Mr. Horner as assistant principal. Yulan Washburn and staff worked frantically all year to get the Rambler into our hands on time. Likewise the SNIPS AND CUTS staff with Al Moreau as editor labored diligently to give us a good senior annual. No one seemed at all surprised that Mike Soper won the I Speak for Democracy contest, or that Betty Barrett was elected homecoming queen. Claire Flintom was chosen Miss Hi Miss, and Sylvia Davis represented Central in the Christmas parade. Then Dick Prather and Peggy Davis were chosen Mr. and Miss Central. We chose Nelson Thomas and Eileen Dunn to be senior class mascots. The Dramatics Club presented Night Must Fall, and that unique production, '4The Male Animal, starring our principal, Mr. john Otts, and several other Central professors. The actors were coached by Mr. Hardin, who took Mr. Golby's place. The piano used at the Snow Ball was financed by money obtained from an allschool coat hanger sale. Again the Honesty Committee, this time with Sylvia Davis as chairman, waged a battle against dishonesty. The plan of attack was much the same as that of the previous year. A very fine Thanksgiving assembly was pre- sented by the Bible Club and Bible classes with the purpose of lifting the students' hearts to God at that season. At Christmastime a beau- tiful concert and a community sing were sponsored by the mixed chorus under the direction of Mrs. Overton. We really began to feel like seniors on College Day when representa- tives from some fifty colleges came and set up information centers in the library. Members of the Honor Society ushered us through that hectic day. A senior counselling plan was organized to help us meet the multi- tude of problems which naturally accompany the rank of senior. Senior class oflicers were Carter Terrell, Bobbie Minogue, Peggy Ballard, and Melissa Hood. The Student Council flourished first semester under the leadership of Dick Barnhardt, Bobby Redd, Lee Kerlin, and Sammy Wil- liams. After a tussle among the Dixiecats, Dogpatchers, and ''Nondiscombobulationists, second semester officers were Hobby Cobb, Letty Hill, Buck GriHin, and Penny Smith. That Wildcat on the other side of the ring brings to mind Central's keen athletic consciousness and her school spirit. Football was our major con- cern, and we felt we had done our best as long as we beat Harding, our cross-town rival, and Reynolds in Winston-Salem. The ratio of wins to losses in 1949 was nine to two with two tiesg in 1950 it was ten to one with one tie. Those were the years the Wildcat team led by All-Star Larry Parker, was mightiest. In our senior year the ball team started out on the down beat. VVe just couldn't score. But with a great increase in school spirit and some superior coaching by Mr. George Sparger and Mr. Bill Ball, we pulled through with six wins and six losses. The Wildcats offer three arguments to anyone who challenges that they had a good football year: Clj Their quick recovery from defeats and terrific improvement in the last part of the season, C21 Their victory over our rival Reynolds and the unbeaten High Point team, and C31 The splendid performance on Thanksgiving Day when they surprised the Harding Rams with a score of 13-0, Central's favor. In 1949 Paul Brantley was star of the basketball team, which suffered eleven losses to nine wins. Mr. George Sparger coached the team in 1951, and with Buddy Brown scoring for the Cats, the record read thirteen wins, ten losses. There was a member of our class on the team that year who played superior ball. In our senior year Hobby Cobb, along with other speed demons such as: Bill Hanks, Bruce Martin, Eddie Bernstein, and Sammy Williams constituted a real threat to every opposing team. Mr. Stan Cropley was back at the coaching position. Typi- cal scores read: Central 84, Myers Park 265 Central 80, Harding 50. We had a team nobody could beat! The golf team, the tennis team under Coach George Sawyer, and the track team under Coach Leslie Outterson all exhibited outstanding sportsmanship. Then those words engraved around the blue stone in the ring- Central High School, Charlotte, N. C. -will always stir something inside of me, because Central has a way of getting into one's blood. It makes you re- member so many little things, such as-the chattering crowd under the clock in the front hall before school and the chant of Beat Greensboro that echoed through the building. There were times when we felt like sardines in the locker rooms, and the fire drills always came in the coldest weather. You should have been there at election times to hear the noisy campaigns and see the crazy posters. There were always ticket salesg tickets for plays, variety shows, athletic events. No one will ever forget the mad rush for the cafeteria at lunchtime, the friendly greetings of friends passed in the halls, the teachers who pleaded for quiet in study halls, or the truckload of singing Bible Clubbers leaving for a week-end retreat. The 209 detention hall for people who slept through the alarm clock, the wel- coming sound of the 3:05 bell, and the very atmosphere and spirit of the school we love has been impressed indelibly upon our hearts. Those were good years of our lives-years of hard work and much play, years alive with precious friendships and many memories. Yes, those three golden years are history now, but they are a living history we shall never, never forget.
