He saw in the records that his Prince Larry Peanut'l Parker led his knights of the gridiron through a very successful campaign. It all began when a Raleigh eleven from the capital stepped high and mighty into the Queen City. The Caps, were a surprisingly weak team and got the short end of a long score in which Coach Brannin literally cleaned the bench. Score 41 to 19. Rolling right along, the Wildcats pounced on Wilson in another uneven scrap. Showing much promise, Central left the field victorious. Score 20 to 0. The knights of blue and gray overcame one of their biggest hurdles when they out fought Boyden High of Salisbury in a nip and tuck contest. Two outstanding backs, Larry Parker and Jerry Barger, who were later to join forces in the annual Shrine Bowl, gave the 11,000 fans a tremendous show. Score 13 to 0. Traveling to Creensboro, the Cats, found an inspired team awaiting them. With Tiny Burtner leading them, the Whirlies sent the Cats home with their first and last loss of the year. Score 7 to 21. Rebounding sharply, the Wildcats returned home and played host to the Creen Wave of Castonia. They overran the visitors as Larry Parker thrilled the crowd with a spectacular 95-yard jaunt. Score 27 to 7. Hitting the road again, Central journeyed to the hills to meet the Maroons of Asheville. judged a toss up by sports authorities, the game turned into a riot with the Wildcats swamping the Maroons by a score of 28 to 14. Slipping by Bred-up High Point, the Central eleven added another scalp to their collection. With mud-soaked uniforms Central again trotted off the field on the long end of a short score-14 to 6. Tying the Bulldogs of Burlington, the Cats, lost a possible conference crown and all hopes for state laurels. Both teams played hard, desperate football, and a fourth quarter score by the Bulldogs turned a dream into a nightmare for Central. The final score was 19 to 19. Choo-Choon jumped the track before a record crowd of 13,500. Reynolds of Winston-Salem, featuring Sonny C Choo-Choo D Ridenhour, met a tremendously deter- mined and far superior Wildcat crew. Thoroughly drubbed and confused by the Cats' three-man line and floating defense, the massacred Black Cand Bluel De- mons, licking their wounds, limped dejcctedly home- ward, their much boasted record of no losses and all wins broken and smashed with a score of 27 to 0. I0 RETROSPECT From over the mountains came the Kentuckians of Male High in Louisville. Neither being fired up in any way, the fans saw a slow and sluggish Central eleven win their only inter-sectional game of the season by a score of 28 to 0. Then the Wolf Pack of Tech met a bigger, more powerful squad and fell at the lanees of the Central knights of the gridiron. Score 28 to 0. Closing the season, Central tackled the Harding Rams in a colorful Turkey Day scrap. Thanksgiving afternoon 28 Wildcats closed their high school football days at Central. Eager to collect their last scalp of the season, the Central boys lashed their crosstown rivals. Parker performed one of his greatest feats. Seconds before half- time, Peanut', ran 25 yards, only to have the play called back and Central penalized 5 yards to their 10-yard stripe. Parker tried again, this time going 35 yards before the play was called back. Now on his own five the mighty Parker took the ball for the last play. Around his own right end he shot down the Held to score, with tacklers bouncing off him like buckshot off an armored tank. The game ended 35 to 0. Thus the Knights of the gridiron carried on their battles. Now the royal statistician checked his slide rule, formulas, and such. He saw that a new scoring record had been made, 287 points for the Knights, with 68 for the opposition. Thus the mighty Cat team had downed its average opponent 25 to 5. King Football made his final statement. He told of Parker and lVlainer's making the Shrine Bowl Squad, Parker, Mainer, and Alford taking All-Conference honors, Parker, Mainer, Alford, Frantz, Amos, and Hatley's making All-City. He recorded, also, last but not least, Larry Peanut, Parkerls making second string A11- American. Parkerls number 57 will always strike a happy chord in any Centralite's heart. Sadly King Football stepped off his throne, his reign ended for another year. As he left his words rang out, f'Hail Knights of the Wildcat Cridironl Lay your pads and helmets aside. Cood work, Coaches Brannin and Spargerl You've done your jobs welll Be proud of your warriors. Central, always be proud and always remember: They played the game They played it hard. Newcomers gave the team its largest hope this year, aided and abetted by the more experienced Ceorge Bobinson, Hobby Cobb, Pinliy Beane, and Gene Crithn. Last yearis schedule of eight wins against twelve losses was a blot on the tearnis record, and the squad worked hard this year to overcome the former downfall. Men that deserve Centralis praise are Slug Claiborne, Eddie Frantz, Roger Little, Buddy Hazelton, Torn Shaw, Paul Dupont, and Hobby Cobb. They played good baseball and helped to overcome the handicap of the tcanrs weakest point-hitting. RICHARD LAWRENCE YANDLE Page One Hundred VlAIl'G71f1'-fll'C HISTORY OF THE CLHSS OF 1951 As we sfaml lzere at your portals . . . You stand on the steps that lead down to the broad sidewalk. You look up at the willow tree, at the third-floor classroom windows beyond. You look across the street to the parking lot where every car has a grinning yellow VVildcat on the back windshield. There's a ring with an oval blue stone on your finger and a thought in your head: It's not easy to think of Central days as days that are past. lt's not easy to believe you're leaving, with a cap and gown and Central memories. The things you remember about Central are myriad. You remember the small-school warmth of its big-school atmosphere. The way it made you feel at home. The easy cordialitv, the smile in the hall, the relaxed wave of the hand. The laughter in the locker room. You remember the luke box at the Maid, loudly sere- nading the lunch time mob. You remember CCS sweaters, the crowd in the front hall before school, Yea, Wildcatsf' the geometry class with the Music Building view. The smell of the halls on a Spring afternoon that somehow seems to be Central's own smell. The words that were Central's expression: Can you spare it?,' Central could always spare it.', There was a good time for the asking, and, for the asking, there was always an idea to be picked up in a classroom. You think of Central and smile. It was a melting pot melted down. Standing on the steps, you look up at the hard brown doors that face the street. You remember the first time you looked at those doors. It was raining-a rainy Mon- day morning in September, 1948. For you, there were hectic first days as a sophomore when Central became a reality. Old friends and new faces. Days of World History and algebra. Danny Michaels, Slug Claiborne, Plowe Rodgers and Grady Price were the ofhcers you helped elect. The football team won the city championship that year, the basketball team came close to winning the state title. A modern, well-equipped woodshop rose up behind the school, and inside the school they tried a brand new plan called HCluidance, with you as a guinea pig. Those were days of Stage Doorf' Oh, Doctor! and the quality of mercyf, Lacy Keesler got elected class treasurer and won the state high school tennis championship. Slug Claiborne, Tommy Barnhardt and Dick McCall were the other second semester officers. Slug Claiborne. Bud Neimer. and Danny Michaels. all served on the Student Council. The Fayetteville football game was a horrible nightmare, but somebody noticed a halfback who played a few minutes in that game, fellow named Parker, who wore number 57. So wide and so liigli . . U Central was becoming for you a legend in her own time-something that takes a little doing. The next year. new clocks were installed and the bell system repaired. So buglers from the music department were stationed in each hall. Like many other things at Central that were a little unusual, it worked. Ceorge Robinson and Slug Claiborne held the class presidencies and Dick McCall, Eddie Frantz, Crady Price, Sally Mock, lo Ann Bailey. and Tom Shaw helped them out. The Key Club hung Page One Huiidreal Tweizty-sis. a Confederate flag on the Ohio State capitol building in Columbus, the Dramatics Club went to Chapel Hill, the Orchestra to St. Louis. Art Colby replaced Hubert Phil- pott as dramatics instructor, and presented Lost Horizon. The Variety Show and A Waltz Dream made Ramloler headlines. You recall the Colonial City-Dilworth feud which flared afresh that year. But it died down when all of Central welcomed the Mexico City High football team with a Homecoming Parade, a South of the Border Hola, Amigof, and a walloping in Memorial Stadium. The football team won nine, lost two, tied two. That number 57 was becoming famous-Larry Parker was All-City, All- State, and All-Southern. Buddy Brown was a big name in basketball, the tennis team finished first in the state, the track team, fourth. Quietly, a teacher stepped down. HMiss Iessieu Hen- derson, called by one of her former students, greatness in a little brown dress,', retired. She had been Rambler adviser for twenty-five years. It was the year of the first lunior-Senior held in the Armory. Another rainy night. But no dampened spirits, instead, white coats and evening dresses and a i'Some- where Over the Rainbown motif. Danny Michaels got elected Student Council presi- dent. Tom Shaw was the vice-president and Plowe Rodgers was secretary. Singing loud your hymns of praise . . . And when summer was over and you were back, you came as a Senior. The things were the same-the same old cafeteria line, the same bus trips to out-of town foot- ball games, the same argyle socks being knitted in study halls. But now, instead of having no particular meaning, the days became thoughtful ones. Slug Claiborne, who set a new standard for hard work at Central, was Student Council president, Pat Alford and Lacy Keesler were on the council, too. Iean Rayburn was the state Voice of Democracyn contest winner. Julius Caesar in modern dress opened eyes toward Central from everywhere in North Carolina. Dick McCall, Floyd Feeney, Grady Price, and Iean Rayburn held down class offices. BEAT REYNOLDS. We did. Christmas already! Old friends, new parties, and in many ways, a New Year for you. Spring. Beach parties and picnics. . I'Tiil they reach the sky. You stand there on the steps and think about it. You think about the football games and the classes and the songs. You think about your days at Central, each memory a fragment. It's not easy to think of Central days as days that are past. They are still too close at hand: days of precious friendships, honors, victories and defeats, the days of the Blue and White, when cheers became music and defeat cut deep, the carefree days of laughter, of books and learning. You turn and walk down the steps to the street below. realizing something: Not only have you been a part of Central, but Central's been a part of you. It still is.
