In accomplishing this, the varsity showed a speedy, well co-ordinated backfield and a strong forward wall. The sixth game wrecked all hopes of an undefeated season. Then came a O-O deadlock and a revengeful win. With another tie, followed by their last defeat, they were on the big side of the score again. That mid-season slump cost the Cats any hopes of conference or state laurels. However, the team played clean, hard football in completing as successful a schedule as they have had in many yearsg one that was packed with thirteen weeks of competitive play. The Cats finished with a profitable record of nine wins, two ties, and two losses. Central racked up 215 points to their opponents' 96. Only three teams were able to score two touchdowns against the Blue and White, and only one crept above the fourteen point mark. 'Central was hard hit throughout the season with untimely injuries in the backfield and line. In spite of this the team repre- sented the school in a superlative manner. A colorful international touch was added to the rugged game when a contingent from Mexico City came visiting. The friendly Central American neighbors spent three days in the Queen City, and began a custom that we sincerely hope can continue. These boys were a group of the gamest ever to come to Charlotte for an athletic event. This game was the first international game to he held in Charlotte. VVithout a doubt the most thrilling game in several years was the Harding contest for the city championship. Coming back strong from a 14-O deficit in the first half, the Cats triumphed to keep the treasured trophy at Central. Central is especially proud of the players who represented the school on honorary teams. B. Ashe was the lone delegate to the Shrine Bowlg and Bill Burch and VValter Propst journeyed to the Optimist Bowl. These three, along with Boy Beaty, Boddev Brown, Dick Calvert, Jerry Cooper, Doug Estes, John Gaylord, Hank Kistler, Kenneth Orr, and Henry Yancey, were invited to play in the first City All-Star game against the Massachussetts All-Stars. Several players were picked for various All-City and All-State teams compiled by North Carolina newspapers. Larrv Parker, in addition to being appointed to several of these teams. was named to a post on the Orlando Star All-Southern High School roster, was an honorable mention on the All-American High School team, and was given the title of ML Football of 1949 by the Charlotte Quarterback Club. To these boys go individual honorsg but we also praise the team as an aggregate. Each boy contributed to the success of the season hy working and sweating for several hours a day from August to December, by spiritedly supporting his teammates, and by dema onstrating his ability to give his best in a sportsmanlike manner. So to the team and to the individual players, our congratulations and heartfelt thanks. Page Sixty-serezz PW LXLFORD. Back .l. B. ASHE, Center IIENRY BEATTY. Veteran Paul Brantley led the quintet and was the spearhead of the Central team. Backed up by Buddy Hazelton and Heyward Beaumont, aptly termed by one sports writer as the Uscrappingest duo in the conference, the Wildcat basketballers developed a reputation as the Frghtingest group in North Carolina. Although the actual count in the wineloss columns does not resent a very impressive record, the hardwood boys lost several liieartbreakingly close encounters which cannot be told by the scores. Outstanding among these was a -H40 loss tu lligh Point and a thrilling 32-30 defeat bv llarcling. A liew inches in height on Central's part might have made a dillerence in several ul' the contests, but as it was, most ol' their light went lay the road. Central was reputed to have two lirst teams this season. Indeed, the second five held their own almost as well as the lirst against the top teams in the state. One of the consoling thoughts is that this second group will be back next year in lull liorce. 'lille student body displayed genuine spirit in their support ul' the hoopsters through a rather unprolitable season, and they nigu he rewarded by a winning team next year. The baseball team in the Past few years has not received proper attention at Central, but Coach George Sparger hopes that this years team will remedy the situation. Buddy King and Pinky Beane, both experienced pitchers, bolster Coach Spargeris hopes from the mound section. Gilbert Ford, Doug Estes, and Donnie Alexander complete the returning portion ol' the 1949 diamond men. Coach George Sawyer plans to match this years net men against several college Freshman teams, in- cluding the University of North Carolina and Davidson, which promise to he very close matches. P c qcrciztj c ght IHTRHIU RHL BOXING Boxing has come to the forefront in Central athletics within the last lieu' years. The squared circle activities, hclcl each spring, have tlrawn a crowcl seconcl only to football. Wnidzi Cenfra I i fHSTORYCNiTH In the fall of 1947, four hundred fifty depression babies swarmed into the halls of Central High School, a place which had become almost legendary to them. They had heard of this seat of learning, situated on the green banks of the broad Sugar River, since mud-pie days. The seniors considered the brats necessary evils, but soon found entertainment in seeing how many exaggerations they would believe. They soon realized that, as all sopho- mores do, we lent an air of enthusiasm and eagerness. Some day we may tell our twenty grandchildren of those days! Well grope for the memories, and they will come-slowly: THE GRANDPARENTS TALE Yes, children, those were the good old days! The first year was a little hard, but we settled down to having a good time. I remember the gym as Winter Wonderland for the Christmas Dance, that good production of Little Woiizeir, and the VVo1mm- less Wedding, put on by footballers for the Honor Society, and the Student-Faculty basketball games. Oh, yes! That's the year when we won the Western Conference football crown. Patricia Moeller, president: David Cossett, vice-presidentg 'loan Watson, secretary, and Ann Hobbs, treasurer, guided us through our first semester in senior high school. The second semester oHicers were the same with the exception of Eddie Hanes, vice-president. A sophomore dance-free-complete with refreshments and a floor show, was one of the main events of the year. Evelyn Helms and Ann Wynn represented us in the beauty sections of the annual. We had made a firm start and were ready to become men and women of the world-juniors! lt was in our junior year that our keepers opened the gates and let us locusts ravage the surrounding countryside for our midday meal. No longer were there pleas to the marshals and the Block C members to keep order in the cafeteria. Another new privilege was smoking-on the track only. That was the year of the short Christmas holidays because of the polio epidemic in the fall. Patricia Moeller, who served as secretary both semesters, was our only representative among the Student Council officers for the '48-'49 year. Officers of the class were David Cossett, presi- dentg Bobby Wright, vice-president, Rosa White, secretary: and Ann Wynn, treasurer. Tommy Dulin, Max Cannon, Barbara Harris, and ,loan Watson served for the second semester. Sue LeClerc and jerry Long proved that juniors could yell too, and Patricia Moeller, Ann Wynn, and Evelyn Helms provided our share of glamour in the annual. Possessing a 5-4-3 football record, the Cats shone on the hard- wood, winning nineteen out of twenty-three games for second place in the Western Conference. That was the year of Stage Door, the White Christmas dance, the operetta, Oh, Doctor, and Tlze Hang1mm's Noose. Kat Caudle and Doug Estes were elected King and Queen of the Spring Carnival, and Patricia Moeller and DeLeon Stokes, Chief Mar- shals. And that Senior year-sad in a way! Before, we had always had elders to look up to, and suddenly we found ourselves with no one to admire except ourselves. lt's hard to do! Choosing jerry Long and Walter Propst as Mr. and Miss Central helped this situation a lot though. E CLHSS OF195O Class officers first semester were Bobby Wright, president: Walter Propst, vice-presidentg jerry Long, secretary: and Roddey Brown, treasurer, for the second semester they were jimmy Pyron, Charles Hassell, Frances Elintom, and Evelyn Helms. Patricia Moeller was elected D.A.R. representative or best citizen among senior girls. Tommy Dulin, president: Ami Bitch, vice-president, Walter Propst, presidentg and Pat Moeller, vice-president, were Student Council leaders from our class dur- ing the year. Throughout the year ,lack Claiborne and Margaret VVatkins, co-editors of The Ramlzler, kept us in the know about such memorable occasions as the Halloween Costume Ball, the Christ- mas dance, and the Variety Show with LuLa Belle Lee Calias Mr. SuberD singing Stormy VVeather and St. Louis Blues. Bill Burch and Walter Propst played in the Optimist Bowl, and B. Ashe in the Shrine Bowl. Central became one of the first high schools in the country to stage an international football game Clxlormal High of Mexico CityD, and this, our homecoming game too, was very colorful. The parade with Patricia Moeller and B. Ashe as King and Queen of Homecoming and thirty- five floats and cars was enough to put many a college procession to shame. Of course, there was a queen for Mexico tooASenorita Evelyn Helms. The seniors in the courts of the Central and Mexico queens were Frances Flintom, Nancy Bolton, Ann VVynn. Nancy Barnhardt, Sue LeClerc, and Anita Peterson. The Sketch Club won the first prize for the most original float. Faye Mitchell and Nancy Barnhardt were selected when Burlington asked us to send two of our prettiest girls to a half-time celebration there. As maseots, the senior class chose Beth Amos, little sister of Bobby Amos, and Sammy Clayton, red-haired brother of john Clayton, after an assembly where approximately thirty pygmies were paraded across the stage numbered as if they were con- victs! Billy Cuion, brother of ,lack Cuion, served as mascot for the football team. There are so many little things you will remember, children. when you're as old as I-trim letter girls who marched before the band . . . the detention hall for tardiness . . . the lovely patch of grass between the school and the Music Building . . . Mr. Wearn and his office . . . the kisses the SNIPS AND CUTS staff threw from the library windows . . . the industrious knitters . . . fire drills while dressing for gym . . . the l. Phillup Space ad in the back of the annual . . . the April Fool lssue of The Rambler when only opposites were true . . . missing Coach Cropley in our senior year . . . Pajama top and barefoot days . . . the poor souls who had to dissect frogs and earthworms just before lunch . . . the magic expeditions to the fair . . . the girls who ran the track at lunch to slenclerize . . . the sudden crowds on the campus when something was happening . . . the B Team slipping, sliding, and pretending to ice skate on towels to clean the floor for the next basketball game . . . Open Houses after the football games . . . Mascots when we were overrun by midgets . . . let's assume. After remembering all of these things, we can only hope that those twenty or thirty grandchildren of ours can have half as friendly and busy a school to attend as Central has been. One of the best ways to keep these memories alive would be to support our Alma Mater in all of its activities as long as there is a Central. That should not be hard, for Central is now a part of us, just as we, the class of the half-century, are now among the thousands who are a part of it. VVe, Ann Austin and Erwin Potts. leave our many hours spent in the Detention Hall for Bobby Noble and Tommy Franklin to carry on after we are gone. 35. We, Bill Bryant, Paul Brantley, Bill Bvrum, and the rest of the rebels leave Mr. Anderson to Floyd Feeney. 36. In conclusion, we, the Senior Class of 1950, leave Central High School as a thing of the past: but a part of each of us, our cherished memory, remains behind as a constant reminder that in its hallowed halls and classrooms we spent three, and in some cases more, of the happiest and most beneficial years of our lives. CHARLES HASSELL, Lawyer, Class of 1950 VVITNESSES: I. M. TIRED U. R. TEw Page One Hzozdred Eleven THE SULILOQUY OF H TH COLLECTUR TIME-MARCH, 1960 I am a tax collector, a member of the world's nosiest profession. Through the use of thousands and millions of tax forms which come into this office each March 15, my colleagues and I can give accurate past and present histories of all working people throughout the United States. As I sit here hurried under such a waste of wood pulp, I think of the names of my old friends and classmates at Central whose present whereabouts and occupations appear on the files and forms before me. I have often wondered what has become of my associates of yesteryear, and before me lies a chance to find out- by making good use of government red tape. Diligent searching profits me a neatly filled affidavit from Career Girl Rosa White, now one of the top salaried fashion designers with Eli Springs' Fifth Avenue. Quite a rise to fame for just ten years effort. More of the same searching produces another similar tax re- turn. This one from Clarence, Bombo by trade, Gilbert, who, along with three of his high school cronies-Billy Conway, Bobby Elmore, and Billy Butlerfis running an establishment called Bombo's Balcony for Brew Buddies, commonly known to every- day folks as a beer jointf' Rather prosperous though, so their earnings show. Better make a note of that and have my men check on the levalitv of transactions there. FJ I Billy VVoods, once a photographer for the Daily Bull, a new Charlotte newspaper, has filed a claim for refund. Bill was in- jured last fall while taking action pictures from the sidelines in a big pro football game. Some big guy broke his rudder, got off course, and mistook sidelined Bill for the ball carrier, hence Bill's claim. Jeanne Allen, Jan Bagby, and Gloria Faulkner have filed a combined return which shows that they are advancing towards the higher income brackets. Together the three girls operate a tailoring shop for men. A good place to meet a prospective lnate. Tommy Dulin's return classifies him as a successful doctor, despite compulsory health laws. Tommy is making his home in hliami with lVIrs. Dulin. Less work and more time for Nell, the return implies. The Four Flats are appearing nightly in some of the nationis largest night clubs and swank hotels, shows this return by Mason Field, featured trumpeter who is working along with Roy Palmer, John Brock, George Fesperman, and Larry Gilland, and making money by the hatfuls. Another return from the entertainment field. Stroupe's Fifteen Famous Flying Females seems to be a struggling concern. The fifteen females are: Nancy Bolton, Joyce Elmore, Anne Graham, Betty Grubbs, Betty Herring, Peggy Hill, Sue LeClerc, Shirley Likcns, Sara lX'IcIver, Nancy Payne, Anita Peterson, Gail Reilly, Ann Stoneham, Shorty Swanzee, and Joan Watson-all some- what lively girls in their high school days, but as trapeze artists?4 Uheli-li Uh. I can see why Fred is struggling. News from the rugged populace has John Gaylord, along with one of those HTall Timber Tessiesn working as a lumberjack. VVonder how John and football ever managed to break up. Speaking of John, the other athletes of my high school days arenlt accounted for in my returns. Let's see, B. Ashe, Bill Burch, Jimmy Hawkins, and Hank Kistler should be out of college by now. That is, unless they can't graduate. I'd better have this college scholarship system probed. Maybe they are failing for a purpose. flere's a joint return on the earnings of Fay Mitchell, Patricia Moeller, and Frances Flintom. Lonely old school teachers, huh. Page One ffzimlred Twelve Never would have dreamed it from their looks. CThat was ten years ago, son.j That Jerry Long just can't make up her mind. Her return is sent in by a different husband than that of last year. This makes the fourth switch Jerry has made since she began paying her taxes as a Mrs. Guess she knows the fare to Reno like a station agent. Roddy Brown and Bill Byrum are partners in law, specialize in divorce cases and criminal law, scoutmasters at night. What a life for the rugged out-door type. Wonder what their wives do? Gad! Sompum's wrong here! Nick Chamis is employed as a horse doctor Cveterinarian to most peoplej on Maud Ellerbe's dude ranch. I didn't think Nick had a love for animals. Maybe he is in cahoots with Gus Heffner, Dan Johnson, and Johnny Long. All four have listed exemptions for racing form's subscriptions. Bookies no doubt! Bunny Cole and Carol Glaser have taken their high school hobbies and made a business out of them. The two have com- bined talents to run Tinted Tapers Co., a candle company which specializes in hand-painted tallows for the formal events Cweddings and the likej. Carol is the tallow-maker, while Bunny makes with the brush. I could say they did a flickering business, what with the type of work involved and the fair financial reports. A husband and wife report. Dick Calvert and Connie Rogers are happily married. Dick's a private detective while Connie's just looking after little kids with wavy black hair. Nancy Northington, Mary Grace Godard, and Margaret Kennedy have sent in returns which put them in the upper categories. Nancy has written a book-How ro Increase Your Voczzloularyg Mary, a collection of poems-Goolarvl's Glreatestg and Margaret, a group of essays on Tlze Superior Wo111an and the Inferior Man. Now ain't that awful? Book writers are the latest trend. Edwin Johnson's first try, Great Guns and Greasy Fingers, is a hit. Margaret Watkins has a novel on the shelvesfsomething about a woman pirate named Anne Bonney. Jenks Robertson has written a best-seller in If I Live To Be One Hundrealf My, my, I wish I had studied in high school. Bud Grice's report likes good company. It was stashed in between the North Carolina Governor's and Miss Margaret Tru- man's. Bud always was a good mixer-kept company with the best of people. Now he's running a used car lot and a pawn shop. Making too much money for that type of work. I'd better put my investigators on him too. Martha Little, Shirley Dobbins, Doris Jean Latane, and Sylvia Ledbetter, Inc., Cthat's a big name for such a small con- cernl is doing pretty well after a tenure in the red. Either the wholesale fruit markets are opening up, or Martha sold that old car. Another joint return from ex-Central students. Rod Reid and Dick Orr Cwowl what a combinationl are pool room proprietors. Not much money made, but I'l1 bet it's peaceful there. CWith Dick Orr around? Yeah, peaceful-Rackll Dorothy Raiford and Jane May have opened a ceramic studio. Pretty Pottery for Prosaic People is their letterhead. Bet they do a bustling business. Family man David Gossett's return is here, and on time for a change. Last year we almost had to send after Dave, 'cause he thought it un-constitutional to pay taxes on his Ford business. But Ann came to his rescue and filled out a form in time to prevent a prison stay for Dave. Good ole Annie-gave up a singing career just to stay home and darn Dave's socks. Helen Shewmake's finally made Broadway. At least she has taken a small step towards making it. She was a second to the lead's second in the hit play For Better or VVorse. It was re- portedly a good play. I hope Helen can get in it and make it better Cor worse, which is itPD. Here's a report from Florida which has a faint odor of the rackets in it. Buddy Hazelton, Don Alexander, and Vaughn Klutts are said to be life guards at Daytona Beach. I'd better investigate this one myself. They just don't pay lifeguards 518,000 per year, and besides, Vaughn can't even swim. hflary and Sara Daly are hostesses in a New York bar room owned by Bobby Hurt and jimmy Huffstetler. At least they seem to do an honest business. Hurt and Huffstetler must have under- gone a change for the better since high school days. George Gibson has a coast-to-coast broadcast on his new radio and television show, Nlgnorance is VVhat Keeps Teachers in VVork. Neil Grifhn is appearing on the same show as the band leader. The hilarious half-hour is sponsored by Patterson's tooth- paste-Ray Patterson, owner. Must listen in sometime, although Bay's toothpaste can't help me any now. Here's one that is paradoxical. Paul Brantley is now head basketball coach at Harding High in Charlotte. What's wrong. Paul, wouldn't Wild Bill give you the same position at Central? Ann Bitch is there too. She teaches a class of manners to the seventh grades. Harding is going to be polite even if they don't have a basketball team. Another from the family circles has it that Doug Estes has opened up a barber shop. I knew Kat would get Doug to cut his hair somehow. Must be a nice place. Kat serves as the mani- curist so Doug canit go flirting. Good shoe shine boy too-Lewis Parham. Boy, I didn't know these income tax forms could bc so inter- esting. I must do this every year. Might even charge admission while I read them aloud and make some money myself. That's against government principles though. Liable to wind up like General Vaughn. It says here that Mary Ann Bullard and jo Claire Crumbley have opened up a travel agency. Trying to put Doris Duke out of business? Maybe they could at seven cents a trip. Oh, now I get it. They are running a long distance travel business. I thought maybe they had started a new city bus line in Charlotte. Long distance is more in their line, however. Virginia Alexander, Pat Wrede, and Sally Bhoads are the high scoring forwards of a touring girls' basketball team. If they score as many points as they make dollars, then women's basketball surely has livened up since high school days. Bob Culbertson, Bobby Wright, Benjie Townsend, jack Procter, and Erwin Potts are another touring basketball team. Men this time. In contrast to the girls, they probably score more than they make. That is, so their tax forms say. I had better check on them too. Benjie has too great a temptation towards gambling not to be throwing some of those ball games for bribes. For kicks' sake, I'd like to see them perform. One wouldn't call it playing. Bill Bryant, Marcus Haney, and Charles Hassell have finally split up. At last reports the three were beginning in business as an advertising agency, specializing in singing commercials. Har- mony wasn't so good, for now Charlie is a magician again, Bill is back as a Key Club work secretary, and Marcus is still trying to make a go of the advertising trade. He is a window dresser for Betty Davis, Inc., wornen's apparel. Poor Marcus, that Betty is a hard-boiled boss. Can't you just see him dressing a manikin with the latest in frocks. Helen Chapman has opened a boarding house across the river from the Citadel in Charleston, S. C. She's probably waiting for Nick to graduate. jack Guion, Al Parker, and jerry Cooper are prosperous sport- ing goods merchants nowadays. They are operating the Charlotte district in a chain owned by Lap Kowalski. I wonder if some ol' that stuff they sell wasn't owned by the Central High School athletic department. jack surely spent a long time in that equip- ment room, and it was pretty bare after he left. Here are the whereabouts of three ex-Central students I found without the use of my tax forms. Nancy Barnhardt, Evelyn Helms, and Maxine Barton are pictured on this week's ,llmzotmzy illagfiziize. Each of them is eating an Old john candy bar, made by the john C. Otts' confectioners. Nice looking models. And l knew hir. Otts had more sense than to hide-out for the rest ol' his life as a high school principal. Twelve dependents are listed here on this return. Six sets of twins have been horn to Nlr. and Nlrs. VValter Propst since they were YValter and Barbara of Central. No wonder they haven't paid taxes before. Larry Holland and Bobby Brannan are club pros at the Myers Park Country Club. Cross-town rivals are jackie Cooper and VVindy VVe:lenfeller who hold the same position at the CCC. Larry was playing the circuit last year. Traveling was too much for hlartha though. jan Crane, Hilda Crim, and Sara Cruse are operating a suc- cessful bakery. Crispy Cookies by Crane, Crim and Crusef' Sounds like a catchy name for the culinary clientele. Maybe they even make Crim-crackers. Here's one involving a batch of ex-buddies of mine. jimmy Pyron has replaced Mr. Otts as Central's mayor, Beverly Cralle is a biology teacher there, Ashlyn Spencer is the student registrar, and jane Crook is running the cafeteria. I bet jim doesn't run around in a hurry all the time as Mr. Otts did. Another from the entertainment held has Ralph Bowe, jim Nance, and Mable Ruth Nease Chow did she get in with those screwballsTD in a carnival. I'll bet jim swallows swords, Ralph and Sam lVIeNinch Cnow I see why hlable is herel just play as dumb as they really are, and hlable stands in the audience and drums up applause. lVlust be pretty good, they made money. More show people a1'e jack Baugh, Tommy Trimble. and Carl Ritchie. .lack runs a flying circus, while the other two do some piloting for him. They fly under the name of the Crisco Kids, and their favorite stunt is the lard roll. Sounds like a circus all right. Quickly, before it's time to go home, here are some in brief: Charles Armstrong and Fred Alexander are drug store soda jerks: Buddy King, Lazy Lynch, and George Freeze are still kicking around in the minor baseball leagues, jimmy Moore and Allan Hoppe are the proud owners of a junk yardg Bruce Green has secured a position on the illccklenliurg Times as a copy boy: Beth Hobbs and Mary Lou Huffman are woman taxi drivers: jane Kerr is a nurse at George Peenstra's Best Home for the Aged: Buddy Biggers is breaking records as a stock broker, Mary Louise Hill has been out of work since Hal Furr, a station owner. dis- missed her as a radio announcer, Henry and Boy Beatty and Beaty are running Beatty and Beaty Bowling Alleysp and Energetic Murray VVhisnant is still just resting. All these students I have found among my files and in my tax returns which have accumulated here since the year's begin- ning. They are doing their part towards paying my salary by paying their taxes. Guess I'll close up shop and go home-don't want to keep Barbara waiting up for me.
