The talented hut unproved Cats opened with a bang by trip- ping the defending state champions, Wilsoii. Inspired hy this initial victory, Central sur- prised its followers hy tying Brown High of Atlanta, later to become one of the strongest 'J'-'em ,M ,f JESSE BERRY, Captain 43 BL MR. BILL BRANNIN, Head Coach teams in the South. With these two tough opponents behind them the Big Blue rolled over Greenshorog Louisville, Ky.g Harding: and Asheville in quick succession. After these smashing victories, the Cats were forced to he content with a tie with High Point. The mud in lVlemorial Stadium was partly rc- sponsihle for this below average performance. Central then journeyed to Miami to suffer their first defeat at the hands of powerful Miami Senior High. The Big Blue, however, was not to he denied the conference cham- pionship as they overpowered VVinston-Salem and Gastonia to capture the crown. Central engaged in two post season games, losing the State Championship to Fayetteville and de- feating Bock Hill in the Carolina Bowl. Page Twenty seven 'm F b' Q? . Scatback Don Elmore led the team in yardage gained: but Donnie Evans, the junior scooter, almost stole the show. The big train, who played spectacular taclde last year, had the fans gaping at full back spot. Drawling jesse Berry, the Alabama boy, proved to be the star of the game by starting the first touchdown march when he intercepted Dickie Davis's pass and charged back to the mid-field stripe. After a march from the fifty Tiddy ploughed over. Early in the third quarter Elmore and VVade brought the ball down again, with Elmore sweeping for 20 yards once. Tiddy came in and again charged over from the 3 but was called back. A five yard penalty set the Cats baclc. Elmore's toss to Holder was good for malcing up the loss and two plays later Tiddy bowled over for the second tally. Burnett,s try for point failed both times. Ster- ling line play was turned in by tacliles Ford and Myers. Zraltas, All-State end of Wilsoii, distinguished himself for the visitors. CENTRAL O-ATLANTA BROWN O Going into the record game of the season to avenge the thorough thrashing received at the hands of another Atlanta eleven last year, the Big Blue of Central held Brown High when they threatened to score. Twice the Cats threw away chances to score that would have won the ball game. With the sterling play of end Charlie Burnett and taclcles lVlyers and Ford, the Cats played a good ball game. VVade's forty yard jaunt through the line was the longest run of the game, and Tiddy's sixty-five yard lticlt was the best seen in high school ball at Memorial Stadium this season. CENTRAL 13-GREENSRORO O VVhen Creensboios Purple Hurricane came again out of the Cate City, it was more of a challenge to Coach Bill Brannin than to the team. Brannin had never beaten Greensboro. Don Elmore went across for both tallies-once on a twenty-five yard jaunt in the first quarter and the next time on a short run off tackle. Burnettis toe added the point to malae the final score 13-O. Beautiful play- ing by full bacli Ham Vlfade plus the runs of Elmore put the total to 146 yards in that game. CENTRAL 7-LOUISVILLE MALE 6 The true toe of Charlie Burnett was the deciding factor in this game when the lanky end placed the ball through the uprights to give Central a one point margin. The air- minded Louisville team almost spelled dis- aster for the Cats in the fourth period when twice long heaves were made over the heads of the Central tail baclcs only to be dropped by the receiver. Mad, lXllcLean got the name of HCraZy Legsn when he caught an Elmore pass on the fifteen-yard stripe and twisted. squirmed and wriggled through two would-be taclclers for the lone Central TD. The Male touchdown was made after lohnson recovered a fumble on the Central 16. CENTRAL -ll-HARDING 6 VV ith lack Harliey and Donnie Evans, two of Central's unsung heroes, running wild and scoring a TD apiece, Central beat a weaker and lighter Harding team at will. llam VVade and Don Elmore came off with the scoring honors by scoring two TD's apiece. The Central reserves played the better part of the second half and showed up surprisingly well. As usual great line play was turned in by Captain Jesse Berry and a fine game was played by reserve Herman Moore. This tracli meet caused Central to lose two of its best line men for the next couple of games, since Don Myers and Hubert Ford were iniurcd. CENTRAL 8-ASHEVILLE O Vllhcn lcsse Berrv, rushing in on an Ashe- C ville play, chased the ball out the end Zone in the first quarter for a safety, Central was on the road to another conference victory. Bottom row: Jimmy Parker, Bnckg Herman Moore, Gunrdg Iulian Albergotti, Center Page Thirty A last quarter TD by Don Elmore, after his fifteen yard pass to Burnett, put the game on ice. Hampered by a muddy field and the in- juries sustained in the Harding game, the Cats were unable to roll any farther. Asheville only threatened once late in the third period. Great line play was seen by those who watched Mac McLean in his end position. CENTRAL 6-HIGH PQINT 6 Playing in the same kind of weather they did in High Point last year, the highly-favored Big Blue of Central came out with a tie against High Pointis Bisons. A 55-yard drive in the second quarter gave Central her lone tally of the evening. The mud on Memorial Stadium helped a slower High Point team to hold the Cats, shifty running attack almost to a snail's pace. Ending the drive was Elmore's 28-yard dash to the Bison two, where he went over on the next play. Don Faulkner again turned in a great game, as did Gene Davis. MIAMI 33-CENTRAL O Central's jaunt to sunny Miami proved to be just what the experts predicted. A heavier Miami team, very much air minded, handed Central its first defeat. Without tail backs Evans and Elmore and linemen Ford and Myers the Cats were out classed. Holder and jack Harkey are due the credit coming Central's way. Passes from Tiddy to McLean furnished the lone threat of the game for Central. CENTRAL 19-VVINSTGN-SALEM 6 The following week, playing in Vvinston- Salem, the Cats redeemed themselves by scor- ing a loop win over Vvinston. jack Harkey, playing his new role as a quarter back, went 38-yards for one touchdown, and Don Elmore in for only five plays went 42 yards for an- other one. A pass from Ramblin' llamlin Wade to Crazy Legs McLean added the final touchdown. Sterling line play was turned in by end Mac McLean. CENTRAL 7-GASTONIA 6 Traveling across the beautiful blue Catawba for their final conference game of the season. a powerful Cat team gained for themselves the trophy for the Vvestern Conference crown with a 7 to 6 win over the Green XVavc of Gastonia. Coach Branninls record was al- most broken that night. Hels never lost Il game with Gastonia-but Burnettis extra point saved the night. A long running jump pass from Tiddy to Dashing Don Elmore set up the Cats, touchdown. Elmore caught the pass on the 2-yard line after it had been batted around by two Gastonia backs. Two plays later Vvade went off tackle for thc touchdown. CENTRAL O-FAYETTEVILLE 39 Behind terrific line play, two Eavetteville backs, Nub Smith and Howard Cheshire, accounted for six touchdowns against the Cats. This game was the Cats' first home de- feat in I8 starts. Central gained exactly three yards for the night. Eayettevilleis claim of being the best team in the state, perhaps of being the greatest high school team of all times, went undisputed. CENTRAL 6-ROCK IIILL O A 92-yard gallop by Don Elmore added the finishing touches to a good season for Bill Brannins XfVildcats. Thus the Cats brought two crowns to Central, the Xvestern Confer- ence and the Carolinais Bowl. Not all of the honors went to Elmore though, for Smiling jack Harkey had a ten-yard running average for the night. The news from South Carolina was good for a bed-ridden Coach Brannin. who had sent the team down under the able direction of Line Coach Stan Cropley. Philpott. The highlight of the season was the presentation of the three act play, Little Woiizeiz, by the members of the dramatics club. Production costs were met bv the two performances given March 4th and Sth. The club presented the one-act play, Echo , in the Carolina Dramatics Festival on April 17. Central's dramatics club accomplished a two-fold task, it provided excellent entertainment for the student body, and it gave its members invaluable experience and instruction in the held of dramatics. The Blue and Gray cinched the city cham- pionship for the fourth straight year by twice decisioning Tech and Harding. After a slow start they completed the season by winning fourteen of their twenty-two games. Included in this win column were seven conference victories. Central lost two games to VVilson and one to parker of Greenville before crashing the win column by edging Parker 27-26 in a return engagement. ln their first conference game, a last half spurt failed to close completely the gap as LUN WOODWARD BILL MCCOY the 'Cats bowed to Lee Edward High of Asheville by the score of 46 to 40. Jippy Carter led the ,Catsi scorers-buclceting thir- teen points. The courtmen then proceeded to bowl over Harding and Gastonia before being tripped by the conference-leading Bisons of High Point. Carter again paced the ,Cats in the Harding and High Point games by pouring in 10 and 8 points, while A1 Fizgerald ran up a total of 15 for high man in the Gastonia game. The cagers then returned home to wallop Tech 44-22, Reynolds of Winston-Salem 40- 20, and Asheville 45-41. Fitzgerald again paced the Centralites in the Tech and Ashe- DONNIE THOMAS IIPPY CARTER Page Sixty BASKHBAll ville tilts, scoring 10 and 17 points. Rod McKnight, with 10, paced the courtmen in the Reynolds game. In a return engagement, the 'Cats edged out Tech by 19 to 17 in a closely contested game at Tech. Donnie Thomas racked up 8 points to lead the VVildcats. Central then journeyed across the Catawba to defeat Gas- tonia 36-26, and continued their winning streak by journeying to Burlington to defeat the Bulldogs 38 to 30. The Cagers were, however, not fortunate enough to return home all victorious as they were whipped in Greensboro by a 37-29 seore. On their return home, they einched the city championship by defeating the Rams from Harding to the tune of 43-29. The new- ly crowned city champs then traveled to High Point to suffer their worst licking of the season at the hands of the Bisons 63-36. Carter paced the ,Cats with a total of ten points in this game. Not letting this defeat demoralize them, however, the VVildcats proceeded to wallop Salisbury and Burlington by 42-34, and 26-24 respectively. Again it was .Iippy Carter who was high scorer with 19 and 9 points for the two games. The overeonfident 'Cats then paid a visit to VVinston and were shocked to the tune of 22-16. Mac McLean was high scorer with 5 points. Malcolm McLean was selected for All-City and All-Conference teams. Al Fitzgerald and jippy Carter were on the city first string. Signed, sealed, and published in the presence of: CAROLYN BUTCHEP. IEANNE HUNNICUTT Page One Hundred Twenty-five Histor of the Senior Class I The lastest report on activities of the North Carolina Educational Association reveals a much needed change in history textbooks. The new book is entitled Uiiril 'l-odrry and was written by the 419 seniors of Central lligh School. A brief outline of its contents follows. Until Today PART l ANCIENT HISTORY ln the damp, dreary days of the fall of l945, several hundred young sophomores began their upward struggle for enlightenment. Por their first leaders they chose Tommy Edmonds, president, Betty Bullard, vice-presi- dent, Bill White, secretary: and Carolyn Butcher, treas- urer. Later Ham Wade, Tommy Edmonds, Betty Bullard. and planet Linker held the respective offices. The sophs had an unusual but welcome member in their first year class, Mr. john C. Otts, our hardworking and understanding principal. On the football team, which won 8 and tied one out of 12 games, Tommy Edmonds and Ham Wade were the pride of the class: The beginners were well represented in a top-honor music department, too, by Charles Creene and Katherine Lurton. PART II THE MIDDLE ACES To take the helm of the returning juniors of '46-'47 were, president, Ham Wade, vice-president, jodie Carrett, secretary, Bill White, and treasurer, hlalcolm McLean. These were followed in second semester by Malcolm McLean, Rodney McKnight, Virginia Ann Landis, and lo Sloan. The halls of Central missed tremendously the much feared, but much loved Miss Bertha Donnelly and other ne'er-trrbefforgotten leaders. After a slow start in football, the season ended with seven wins and no ties out of eleven games. juniors on the team began developing plans and muscles for their all-important senior year. ln the field of music, the orchestra, the brass quartet, and the choir took number one ratings for excellence. The year was further brightened by good programs: such as Professor Quiz, a plav, the Mei-clmizr of Venice, the studentefaculty basketball game, the honors and awards program, where Eleanor Robinson received a PepsieCola scholarship, and the lunior-Senior Prom, which owed much of its success to C. P. Deal. PART IH A NEW DAY The school year began again, as it always will, and wondering survivors found themselves in the much de- sired and respected CFD position of seniors. School spirit seemed spread all over, as little trips with the paint bucket evidenced. Coach Bill Brannins pep talk on the first day of school was responsible for the enthusiastic start, but nothing could compare with the boost to school pride that our incomparable football team gave us. lt forged through twelve games with 8 wins and 2 ties to capture the western conference cham- pionship title. As another outcome, lesse Berry and Don Myers were chosen to be a major part of the backbone oflthe North Carolina Shrine team. 9 43 The Student Council officers for first and second semester were Ham Wade and julian Albergotti, presi- dents, Betty Bullard and C. P. Deal, vice-presidents, loan Pharr and Patsy Welle1', secretaries, and Harriet Whit- more, treasurer for both semesters. The Rmrzlaler launched its campaign with the election of lovely Peggy Fox and popular Ham Wade as UML and Miss Centralf' One of the most liked and most refreshing personalities around Central was undoubtedly Betty Bullard. As a special recognition, she was chosen by her classmates to receive the D. A. R. award. Miss Bonnie Cone left the faculty, but not the halls of Central, to become director of C. C. U. N. C. This prof motion was without question the result of her experience with the juniors in geometry. Mrs. Margaret Taylor was welcomed as a new and very important addition to the music department. The recreational committee headed bv Frankie Palmer deserved an extra pat on the back for its fine work that year with the open houses after the games and the Christmas Dance. 'iAll Carrs to the Rescue given bv the dramatics class under Hubert Philpott and the presentation of new flags by the Cirls' Cood Sports Club were among the out- standing assembly programs. The officers crowning this senior year were Marshall Shepherd, president, Reggie Buie, vice-president, Dick Tiddy, secretary, and lesse Berry, treasurer. And to lead them across the finishing line were Cene Little, president, Knox Price, vice-president, Herman hloore, secretary, and Bill Vllhite, treasurer. No one will deny that Mrs. Cornelia Henderson, our adviser for all three vears, was one of our truest friends, we couldnt have made the grade without her. PART IV EXAMINATION Do you remember: The first one to marry-Peggy Heinke Poard, The dancing at lunch, The art in the halls, and on the blackboards: The rain, rain, rain, all fall and especially on Fridays, The cute new teachers admiring the handsome new teachers, Cand they werent the only onesD The lunch movies, The building of the new athletic hut, The sore throats on Saturday morning, The little mascots running around, The corny election campaigns, The angora knitting that got in students noses and on teachers nerves, The music and bubbles floating through the halls, The strolls around the track, The relief and heartache of graduating? lo SLOAN, Historian.
