Single Life for Me. Her producer, Mr. Buck San- ders, says this will be her best picture. Miss Cheat- ham made three outstanding movies in I956. Single Life for Me promises to win the Academy Award for 1957. TRUMPET PLAYER GETS GREAT RECEPTION Mr. Lester Todd is on his way to the top. Last night he opened at the Skylight Room of the Wal- dorf Astoria. New York gave him a reception that onl a King would be worthy of. Mr. Todd is King of tire Horns. His piano player, Mr. Charles Reese, was also praised highly. RATED NUMBER ONE Atlantic City, N. J.-Miss Peggy Carnes has been voted the most beautiful secretary of 1957. She is now Mr. Bill Kingfish Brannin's secretary. Mr. Brannin is President of the National Professional Football League. MATTHEWS BUILDS PAVILION Miss Joanne Matthews and her Fayetteville part- ner have opened a new pavilion at Ocean Drive, S. C. She expects to have Stan Kenton down in june, Vaughn Monroe in july, and Tex Benekey in August. All drinks, through the courtesy of Alice Church, and pop corn will be on the house. Miss Matthews is expecting a large crowd of Charlotte bums. PETE cleWITT CAUSES RIOT AT MIAMI BEACH Miami, Florida-When the girls spotted bachelor Pete deWitt in a bathing suit on the beach yester- day, there was a mad rush to get to him. Fifty-five girls were iniured in the stampede. The chief of police has asked Mr. deWitt to please go bathing in a shirt and long pants. SOCIETY RECEPTION PLANNED FOR CONNECTICUT AND ALABAMA VISITORS Misses Betty Choate and Peggy Hull will enter- tain tonight at the home of Miss Choate for Mr. and Mrs. Rush Coffin, and I-lotsy and Tommy Tooth- aker. Mrs. Coffin is the former Miss Marilyn Mills. The Toothakers are visiting Hotsy's parents on Briarwood Rd. Mrs. CoHin came to Charlotte in order to introduce Rush to Charlotte Society. Misses julia Cuthbertson, Ann Flintom, Ren Frew, and Meechie Hunter have returned from a visit to New York. The four girls are still looking for a future. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Moore entertained last evening for Miss Barbara McAllister and Mr. Hil- lard Knight, who plan to be married next week. Covers were set for Carolyn and Donald Elmore, jane and Leland Helms, Chris and Spike Cofer, Peggy and Buddy Harris, Mary and Dick Tiddy, and Mott and Ed Charles. SPORTS NEW PRO NAMED AT AUGUSTA GOLF COURSE Augusta, Georgia-Dick Tiddy has just been named the new pro at the .Augusta Country Club, where Tom Bachman and Buddy Harris are green- keepers. On the side, Mr. Tiddy is helping his wife, the former Miss Mary Street, run a reducing club. Look at the owners of the reducing club and then run! Which way? You tell mel KIRBY NAMED BEST SPORTS ANNOUNCER OF YEAR Bobby Kirby has been named the best sports announcer of 1957. Kirby won this title when he announced the Rose Bowl Came of 1957, in which Tunney Martin's team, the Carolina Tar Heels, won 54-O. By way of mention, Tunney's twins were awarded a prize for being the best majorettes on the field. LELAND HELMS FACES COURT CHARGES New York, N. Y.-Leland Helms has signed up to play for the New York Giants after he had al- ready signed to play professional football for the Washington Red Skins. His talents have gotten him into trouble, but his charming wife, jane, talk- ed to the judge and fixed things up. Leland will play pro-baseball all summer and pro-football all fall. THE FORMER CENTRAL FOOTBALL STARS PLAY WITH CHICAGO BEARS Richard Foard, Spike Cofer, and Don Elmore all made good records during the 1957 season with the Chicago Bears. During one game when Elmore was making a long run, he let out with that grin and immediately after the game signed a contract with Ipana Toothpaste. His wife, Carolyn, is very happy that he is modeling for Ipana Toothpaste instead of playing the hazardous game of football. TO FIGHT HERE Frank Couvillon, a wrestling contender for the wrestling championship of the world, is scheduled to fight Leon Kendricks, local wrestler, on May 10. The winner of this match will fight the Champ ion of the British Isles in july. Kendricks has re- cently won the Cooksy Prize for discovering the best cake recipe of the year. The minor event will be the fight between the Masked Marvel and Minnie Bone-Crusher Besser. Page Nineteen
