It is hard to realize that the lowly, unpretentious sophomores who entered Central lligh School in the fall of l9-H now comprise the grand and glorious graduating Class ol' '-17. It has taken three years at the old Alma hlater to work this change, and those three years haye heen full of' many exciting expe- riences and adventures. Ahout the first hig eyent on our calendar that year was the election of ollicers. VVe chose lluddy llarris, president: Patsy Smith, yice-presidentg 'loc llookout. secretary: and llotsy Newman, treasurer, and later in the year Nelson Adams, president, Chris llood, yicelpresidentg Pete deVVitt, secretary, and Nancy Cheatham, treasurer, were picked as second semester oflicers. As sophomores, we were proud to go to a school that sported such a foothall team as Central did that year. At the close of the season our team won the Class A State Championship hy defeating Ptal- eigh 7 fl. lkluch ol' the credit went to our then new coach, llill llrannin. Soon we found that there was more to our school than iust the first impressions. 'l'he orchestra and hand proyed themselyes to he among the hest in the state, while the dramatics department presented two hig hits, an amusing play called The Royal lfmoily and, with the Student Assembly and the music department, a yery sticcessful operetta, 'IVIIL' lforest Prince. ln those days the war was still going on, and home rooms striyed to help keep our hlinute hlan flag waying in front ol' school. VVe wondered at the time what strange influence hliss Bertha wield ed oyer her room to make it go IOOW eyery week without fiaill After an all too short summer, we returned to school the next year feeling much more superior as itmiors. VVe could then watch haireuts heing dished out and not haye the slightest worry. Page Fourteen SE IUH EL S5 HISTUHY 'lihat year our principal, Dr. Caringer, left to hecome Associate Superintendent of Charlotte City Schools. Although we deeply regretted losing him, we welcomed with justified confidence and pride our new leader, hir. .lohn Utts. As oflicers for our iunior year we selected Nancy llolder, president: Dick 'l'iddy, yice presidentg Alice Sisson, secretary: -lohnny Jones, treasurer, for first semesterg and Nelson Adams, president: Leland llelms. yice-president: hlarion Christopher, secre tary: and Dick Tiddy, treasurer, for second semester. The foothall team that year won 8 and tied one out of its I2 games. Buddy Bell and Coat Dayis were the sparks hehind the team in this successful year. ilihe hand, orchestra, and choir went to the state contest and took away top honors. The orchestra was the only one in its class to ohtain a first rating. At the end of the year the annual llonors and Awards program was presented in the Armory. 'llhe higgest award giyen was the foursyear Pepsi Cola scholarship, which -lack Killhefler won in a statef wide contest. 'lhen came the great eyent. VVe entered school the next fall as seniors! VVe elected iliunney lklartin, presidentg l.eland llelms, yicelpresidcntg l,ihhv Propst, secretary: and 'liommy Langford, treasurer, to start us through this eyentful year. 'lihe llamlvler hegan its year hy sponsoring the election of .Iimmy Holton and Sally Carson as Mr. and hliss Central. Ronald Creen, Clarence Byrum, and C. P. Deal were chosen to occupy three of the top positions on the llmttlwler. 'l'he foothall team got oft' to a slow start, hut near the end of the season picked up and showed itself one of the hest in the state. Richard Foard was the main driye hehind the team and soon hecame rccog niled all oyer North Carolina as a star player. Sally Carson was selected hy the senior class and faculty as the winner of the DAR eitivenship award. Ruth Nance and lsihhy Propst were runners tip for this high honor. A well-known company of players came to Cen- tral to present 'lllic tllcrclttmt of l'enict'. 'lhis and the Professor Qui! show that also came to Central's stage were two ol' the entertainment highlights. ln years to come we of the Class of '47 will proha- hly forget many of the facts and hgures that we s learned at Central, hut we will neyer forget the friendships and good times that we had there.
