H. S. The faces were all new to me, and I seemed very J much a stranger until I heard a voice ring out, Where do you think you're going? I turned to see who it was and found myself once again face to face with that guardian of the halls, our friend and counsellor, Miss Bertha Donnelly! I told her that I had returned to see how the old school was getting along and asked her ifl she had I X heard anything from the old gang, the class of '46. She smiled and replied, Yes, and they are getting into just as much mischief as ever! We strolled down the hall and sat down, on the bench across from the office: and, as many happy memories drifted through my mind, she told me all she had heard of the class of '46. I gathered the following from what she related to me: N is Mrs. Donald Ahern, the former Miss Wyndall Mason, is the new girls' athletic director at the University of Southern California. Her husband is head football coach there. Tommy Waggoner Was recently elected president of the National Farm Association. Besides being a well-known farmer, Tommy is known for his developments of fertilizer. Joan Weinman, the famous Powers model, is spending her vaca- tion at her summer home in Florida. This is only one, of her several homes throughout the nation. George Morgan, chief of the FBI, has announced that he has finally solved the famous mystery of Who Threw the Whiskey In the Well? The culprit was none other than the eminent prohibi- tionist,, Pig Newton. Miss Lib Hutchison has replaced Fanny Brice on the Baby Snooks program. It is rumored that Beverly Cole, voted Miss Sophistication of l95l, has married a Hindu. Her only complaint seems to be his bed of nails. Speaking of marriages, Mary Davis will be betrothed to the Reverend Grover Martin when he returns from a missionary, trip to Inner Mongolia. Lib Sellers and Anne Sisson are running a Lonely Hearts club. Those champions of young people's rights, Betsy Cromer and Anna Wolfe, have opened a night club in New York known as the Club Under 21. The club is featuring Bill Hodges' famous orchestra with Jack Burney at the piano and Gloria Alderman singing. Yes, she's still singing Come to Baby Do. Page Forty SENIUH CLASS PHUPHEEY Donald Cobb and Herbert Schwartz, famous Esquire artists, have a new model who is none other than Central's own Dolly Blake. Postmaster General Jimmy White has stated that Esquire will be permitted to go through the mails free. Dick Dooley is running a rocket express to the moon, Mars, Ju- piter, and Venus. Barbara Fehr is still as lovely as ever. Harry Haar is starring in the Monte Carlo Ballet. The Robert Brown Construction Co. has recently completed the new building for C. H. S. The old building has been converted into an institution for juvenile delinquentsl George Griffin may be seen on outdoor posters advertising Pepso- dent's Smile of Beauty . Bob Tarrant and Vic Riggsbee are Fuller brush salesmen. Bill Harding and Mary K. Roberts are raising a large family. Eleanor Marshall is playing first violin with the Boston Sym- phony. Jerry Green is burning up the links everywhere. He is known as the modern Byron Nelson. Kathryn Havnaer owns an exclusive women's shop on Fifth Ave- nue. The shop features clothes designed by Jean Braswell. The latest . , . . L ff style is Jean s Jaunty Jerkingsurts. Int October we went enthusiastically to the polls and elected Nancy Holder, presidentp Dick Tiddy, vice-president: Alice Sisson, secretary: Johnny Jones. treasurer: and Miss Virginia Allen, class, adviser. The crisp autumn days meant FOOTBALL, and all the Juniors Weren't on the sidelines: some very important members of our class were carrying the pigskin--Pete DeWitt, Donald Elmore, Wade Fox, Leland Helms, Hillard Knight, Dick Tiddy, and Bob Wiley helped the Wildcats to many a touchdown. We have brains as well as brawn, for at the end of the first semester there were six all A students among our ranks: Doris Anne Bradley, Joan Cansler, Claire McCall, Libby Propst, Eleanor Robinson, and Sidney Wanzer. After frantically cramming for exams we were ready for some fun. When the clock struck 8 on February 7, 1946, most Juniors were at the Armory Recreation Center for a bang-up Valentine party, arranged by the first semester oflicers and their faithful committees. We played pool and bridge, danced and watched a clever floor show featuring Carolyn Forte and Barbara McAllister. But the climax of the evening came about 9 o'clock as the punch, doughnuts, and popcorn appeared, and as quickly disappeared. The ofiicers for the second semester were elected early in February: Nelson Adams, president: Leland Helms, vice-president: Marion Christopher, secretary: and Dick Tiddy, treasurer. As a fitting close to a grand year we showed the dignifled seniors a good time at a lovely Junior-Senior prom, held in the Central gym in May. After a spirited campaign and election, the Hrst item of business was the selection of standing committees. Ham Wade was made chairman of the Commencement Committee, which had charge of the decorations for Commencement. Carolyn Butcher led' the Social Committee, which planned all the parties. The high light of the social season was the square dance given in the gym on March 22nd. Betty Bullard was chairman of the program committee. The three programs given during the first semester featured information concerning goals which we should all attain: the Honor Society, which we hoped to make: and awards. honors, and scholarships to which we should hitch our wagons of ambition. . The class was indebted to its splendid adviser, Mrs. Cornelia Henderson, and appreciated her good advice, patience, and enthusiasm, as well as her sympathetic understanding. The girls co-operated with the Athletic Department by selling tickets to the games and sponsoring the program sales at each game. During the Tuber- culosis Seal Campaign, the club gave a program launching the drive and sponsored the sale at Central. This sale was the most successful Tuberculosis drive ever held at Central. FUUTBALL RESULTS-1945 CENTRAL 32, HANEs O Central High's Wildcats opened their 1945 season in a blaze of glory by completely bowling over an outclassed Hanes High outfit from Winston-Salem. Spike Cofer and Leland Helms, the two leg-churning fullbacks, were the big noise in the 'Cat scoring column, while Buddy Bell display- ed his potential All-State power with beautiful jaunts up and down the field. Coach Bill Brannin's Big Blue was deep in Hanes territory when a drenching downpour put a stop to the hostilities eight minutes short, ATLANTA TIECIH 14, CENTRAL 7 Despite a terrific battle put up by Central, a brilliant Atlanta Tech aggregation proved just a little more than the yet green Wildcats could handle and handed the Centrals ' i ' Q . . - 'w A! sa. their first defeat of the young season, l4-7, before some 10,000 fans at Memorial stadium. Leland Helms, who was soon to lead the Western Conference in total points scored, was the only Wildcat able to bull one across the powerful Tech line. He also converted for the pointf Helms had been promoted to the starting backtield when Cofer was shelved by academic difficulties. GRisi2NsBoRo 18, C1aN'1'RA1. 6 A determined and surprisingly offensive Greensboro eleven branded the Wildcats with their second straight de- feat in the home arena by an l8-6 deficit. The Whirlies literally reversed the Cats out of the ball game with sweep after sweep around the then ragged Central flanks. Bell, still flashing brilliantly, although the Ciate City crew put the skids on him several times, tallied the lone Central marker. Again threatening clouds kept away an anticipated crowd of l0,000. !l.1.aQ1fM'W'e' I lz1t'n11'!iti11z'on C.'Ioc'kALu1'se BISTSY ROBl5R'liS . , , . The Conference contest was featured by sparkling runs by Bell, Helms, Goat Davis, and Tommy Edmonds. Ed- monds, who had not yet unleashed his rumored power, really ran amuck, twice returning kicks for sixty yards. CENTRAL 39, BURLINGTON 0 A much lighter Burlington crew. fell an easy prey to the swiftly moving Wildcats 39-0 in a drizzling rain. Again Edmonds and Bob Davis highlighted the fracas with long trips down the side lines resulting in two TD's apiece for the speedy duo. Helms stayed on the top of the loop scoring list with another tally, with his sophomore understudy, Ham Wade, accounting for the other one. Coach Bill Brannin attributed the surprising loss to over- confidence and injuries. Bob Davis, hurling them with a bandaged wrist, completed live out of ten aerials, but for one of the two aforementioned reasons. the usually poten- tial Wildcat machine was unable to move. Bell once got off to what looked like a jaunt that might be the spark that the failing Centrals needed, but was hauled down from behind and the spark was snuffed with his fall. CENTRAL 70, GASTONIA O Roaring back from the Columbia mishap, Central's powerful legions turned loose their full strength on their old cross-the-river rivals in Gastonia and vanquished the dazed Green Wave 70-O, Idenlilication Clock-u.'1se JOANNE SHOEMAKFR , DONALD ELMORE . , BOB FOSTER BOB DAVIS .,.. Sophomore Ham Wade had a field night of it, racking up four touchdowns and passing for another. In addition to Bell, Helms, Davis, Edmonds, etc., blond-headed Phil Davis flnally shook off his injuries long enough to show his stuff in the onesided rout. Third stringer James Mock reeled off the most scintillating run of the eve- ning, returning a punt seventy yards for a touchdown. CENTRAL. 19, SALISBURY 6 A rejuvenated Boyden High outfit from Salisbury came to the Queen City with ru- mors that it was a soft touch, but the Boydens outplayed the Wildcats during the first quarter and almost stopped the locals' attack before the 'Cats finally broke loose in the second and third stanzas to trip the Rowan County lads 19-6. Held scoreless in the first period, Central came back in the closing minutes of the first half as Bob Morrow let one of Bob Davis's passes trickle through his fingers only to fall into the waiting arms of Buddy Bell who carried it across. Davis passed for another and himself scored the final touch- down of the '45 season for the Wildcats. FOOTBALL SCHEDULE-l946 I5riday. Sept. 13, Burlington. Here friday. Y l SHHI E BUWL G ME The Blue and Gray of Central was perhaps the most brilliant of 37 schools of the two Carolinas represented in the ninth Annual Shrine Bowl game, Dfec. 8, in that it furnished the Head Coach of the Tar Heel squad, the queen of the North State aggregation, and the two leading ball toters on the gridiron. Upon the completion of his second year as head coach and director of athletics at Central, Coach W. D. Bill Brannin was named to head the coaching staff of the North Carolina squad in the annual affair held in Memorial Stadium, In a weeks time, the red-faced Irishman moulded twenty-three lads who had never worked together into a smooth running double wing combination which overran the Palmetto All-Stars 8-0 in the Shrine Classic. Beautiful. blonde Joanne Shoemaker made an exquisite queen as she rode in the parade and also during her reign over half-time ceremonies. Buddy Bell and Bob i'Goat Davis, who had played brilliantly for Brannin's Wildcats all season, turned in sterling performances in Americas only high school bowl game, Black-headed Buddy lived up to the high expectations of him by rambling over for six points in the nnal canto. Easy going Goat was the leading ground-gainer for the afternoon, with a Slg average and also was a bulwark in defensive duties. ln addition to the above Centralites. Jimmy Luther, head manager of the Wildcat footballers. and Don Ahern and Bill Durham both Central lettermen served as mam ers , . . .. rg for' the Tar Heels. Central's cheerleaders and band also lent their services to the colorful occasion. f ls? The Wildcrat courtmen ran up 16 victories against eight losses in their up and down season. At times they soared to great heights and then fell the victim to lowly underdogs. The powerful High Point Bison, until that time undefeated, were edged out 27-26 by Mac lV'cLean's foul shot in the closing second of a thrilling duel. Winston- Salem was' the only team on the slate that tripped the 'Cats in both encounters. Bill Fowler, lost to the Centrals in mid-season because of a broken wrist, returned at the close of the season to bag the highest number of points for the 'Cats 'cause he and his mate, Leland Helms, both landed berths on the city All-Star five. Helms and Hubert Mosely 'vere the defensive stalwarts for the blue and Gossett and Mac McLean rounded out the in sterling performances. Adviser The Girls' Athletic Association entered one its best years by beginning with soccer. The seniors were all prepared to win the championship when Betty Bullard and her sophomore team came from nowhere and took over. Yep, those muscle women really startled us. Did I say muscle women? Well, excuse me. For, as you can see, the G. A. A. is really made up of all kinds of girls-short ones, tall ones, thin ones, and big ones-Junior Marshals, super- latives, class oliicers, and nobodies. ln general, every girl who has a love for sports is in the G. A. A. That is why our slogan HA sport for every girl and :I girl in every sport is so fitting. Our adviser, Miss Margie Gabriel I.Gabby,,I, has really worked hard toward making this a successful year, and for the first time we snagged a night basketball game with Harding. It took a while for the girls to get in condition, but after a few rub downs they were all set and rarin' to go. Now, the seniors are sorry that the year has passed so quickly: however they will to the juniors and sophomores all the happiness that they c-nce had on the soccer field and basketball courts of good ole' Central I-li.
