Jtt Having, Menuwf of, 3$wtbwta Jean Minw Mwdtin 1929 - 2CC3 Jack Freeze, Editor BILL BOYCE, Associate Editor BUCK RudisiLL, Business Manager Snips i Cuts PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1945 TODAY at As A YEAR of work and fun comes to a finish, another class of seniors prepare to receive their diplomas. It has been a good year, and we hesitate to leave the classes, clubs, and organizations that have afforded us so much enjoyment. We who are leaving wish you who are staying the most profit and pleasure possible while at Central. The school spirit reached its peak ij 1945. It hasn ' t reached its maximum, but never in the history of Central has the feel- ing of school patriotism reached every stu- dent ' s heart as it has this year. Page Four ■BBHHRM CENTRAL The prime purpose of any annual is to build and reflect school spirit and to preserve it for those who are unable to be back and share the pleasures of a great school. With such a fine feeling as that which now exists at Central, Snips and Cuts this year can hope only to recast a portion of the good work that is being carried on there by the student organizations. If this edition helps you to relive one happy moment at Central or serves as the medium for a single pleasant thought of the banks of Sugaw Creek, Snips AND CUTS 1945 is truly a success. Page Five 3n Mtmatxam . James Davidson Boyleston September 5, 1907 — November 21, 1944 Teacher and Coach at Central High School, 1936-1942. Central students will always remember Newberry Jim as a great man, coach, and friend. For when the One Great Scorer comes to write against your name, He marks — not that you won or lost — but how you played the game, Page Six DEDICATION Dedicated to Miss Marion Fraser, Dean of Girls. An effective teacher, a staunch supporter of scholastic activities, a helpful adviser for extracurricular interests, and an understanding consultant, Miss Fraser has been a true friend to this Class of 1945 and to all the other classes that have graduated from Central since she came here. It is a privilege and honor to dedicate to her this edition of SNIPS AND Cuts. Page Seven First semester Student Assembly First Row: Joanne Ledbetter, Betty Barnhardt, David Ivey, Tommy Lawing. Page Forty -two HILLTOP The hill is nearly flat here, top in sight; We pause to rest and ponder for a while The well-worn path that winds to left and right, Each year within itself a happy mile: A path where thirst for knowledge found its drink In hushed green depths of cooling, lucid springs; A path where spruce and hemlock seemed to link This hill with brush of soaring eagles wings. In thoughtful mood we view the slope below: The glossy, heart-shaped leaves that speak of friends And tangled brambles of our tears and woe. Now, with a step or two, our long climb ends. Beyond this crest, as happy daylight wanes, We see, blue-shadowed, other hills and plains. Nancy Shepherd, Class Poet. SONG Here ' s to dear old Central Class of forty-five! Dur- ing the first few weeks we felt slightly dazed in such a large school with so many new faces; how- ever, we were soon filled with school spirit, sub- scribing to the Rambler and cheering the football team. To lead us through our first year we chose, for first semester, Tommy Harris, president: Gene Gra- ham, vice-president; Vivie Bayne, secretary; Bill Dyer, treasurer; for second semester, Jack DeWenter, president; Virginia Gravatt, vice-president; Jane Lawing, secretary; Jimmy Spearman, treasurer. The Dramatics Department presented two hits, The Man Who Came to Dinner, and You Can ' t Take It With You. Also, in the spring the Stu- dent Council sponsored a very successful variety show. Quickly our first year at Central passed; and we were off to a good start as juniors, with Carolyn Byrd, our leader; Wint Holtzclaw, vice-president; Nancy Reid, secretary; and Joanne Ledbetter, treas- urer. With Coach Bradford doing a fine job of coach- ing and the boys doing a fine job of playing, we came through the football season to win a Western Con- ference title, a state title, and an invitation to play Miami High School in the Orange Bowl Stadium. The second semester we elected as junior marshals Jimmy Spearman, chief marshal, and Joe Cherry, assistant chief. These were chosen just in time to usher at the operetta, Hats Off, presented by the Student Council. Jean Cushman and Bill Staple- ton held the leading singing roles. Our class officers for the second semester were Wint Holtzclaw, presi- dent; Jimmy Eskridge, vice-president; Nell Cherry, secretary; and Leighton Choate, treasurer. In the spring both the track and tennis teams brought home state championships. During the summer after our junior year, a num- ber of our class took advantage of the accelerated course offered in summer school and were graduated in July. It was at this time, too, that North Carolina was hard hit by that dread disease, polio. Although the epidemic did not affect most of us personally, it did affect us generally; the summer vacation was length- ened, and the city schools were not opened until September 18. We all approved of this arrangement until Christmas, when much grumbling was heard over the meagre one week ' s holiday. We started the football year with a bang, winning over Lenoir two nights before school opened. At the close of the season we had a first-rate team, hold- ing second place in the state. Much credit goes to our new coach, Bill Brannin, and to his assistant, Footsy Woods; also, co-captains Tommy Harris and Gene Graham and to each boy on the team. During the first semester of our senior year, under the guidance of Joanne Ledbetter, president of the Student Council; Betty Barnhardt, vice-president; David Ivey, secretary, and Tommy Lawing, treas- urer, we took great strides in carrying out our mottoes On With Central ' s War Work and We Believe in Central; Let ' s Make the People of Charlotte Believe in Her, Too. With Shirley Tison and her committee working hard and persistently, the dream of many finally came true: the Armory Servicemen ' s Club was opened to Central students three after- noons a week. The year 1944-45 marked Central ' s twenty-first anniversary. We duly recognized her birthday with ' a big celebration in the Armory Auditorium. Betty Barnhardt was chosen as the most outstand- ing girl citizen in our class, and was thereby entitled to the Daughters of the American Revolution Citizen- ship Award. As our senior class officers for the first semester we elected Tommy Harris, president; Jimmy Esk- ridge, vice-president; Lillian DeArmon, secretary; Jimmy Spearman, treasurer: for the second semester: Jimmy Black, president, Barbara Lineberger, vice- president; Shirley Field, secretary; Wint Holtzclaw, treasurer. Jack Freeze was editor of the SNIPS AND CUTS, and Buck Rudisill business manager. Jack left for Duke in the middle of the year; so Bill Boyce, associate editor, did a splendid job of taking over the editorship. Despite the loss of a large number of boys to colleges and the armed services, our second semester, was an outstanding one, with Tommy Lawing being president of the Student Council; Nancy Shepherd, vice-president; Carolyn Byrd, secretary; and Ken Wilson, treasurer. The Dramatics Department which had been reor- ganized under the leadership of Mrs. Donald Thur- man, the new speech and dramatic art teacher, pre- sented a delightful three-act play, The Royal Family, starring Troyanne Freeland, Bettie Cansler, and Paul Ritch. In April the Student Council and the Music Department sponsored a glamorous operetta, The Forest Prince. The boy leads were taken by David Littlejohn and Tommy Lawing; the girl by Jewell Spain and Barbara Lineberger. Now, on the eve of commencement, as we look back on the years spent at Central, we realize with a mingled feeling of joy and sorrow that three of the best years of our lives have come to a close. Although, in the future, each of us will travel along a different road, we shall all cherish our mem- ories of Central and of the class of ' 45. Marie Snelling. Historian. Page Forty -six LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the mighty Seniors of this honored institution of learn- ing, Central High School, having completed our tedious and terrifically tough tasks unhesitatingly, with no thought of our own preferences and pleasures, sally forth bursting with brilliance, refinement, and various and sundry other blessings that come to us as a reward for the countless number of hours we have diligently labored here. Fully realizing that this Senior Class is composed of indi- viduals definitely superior to the rest of the human race, we feel obligated to leave with those less fortunate than we. namely, the lowly Ju mor s, a list of our outstanding peculiarities, charac- teristics, and mannerisms, which we graciously bestow upon them. We do hope and pray that these upcoming Seniors are aware of the fact that they can never completely take the places of the members of the present Senior Class, but we also desire that they try their best to live up to the high, in fact, unsur- passed, standards which we have set. Page Forty-seven SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY For a moment or two Let ' s forget our troubles and fears And let our minds travel On through the years. Let ' s look into the future And have some fun — Take for example the year ' 61! Jimmy Black is Mecklenburg County ' s most pub- lic-spirited citizen. He is one of the outstanding busi- ness men of Charlotte. Arthur Toomer is now the leading baritone in the Metropolitan Opera Company. Mr. Toomer will be remembered for his classical arrangement of There ' ll Be Smoke on the Water. Bette Cansler is a famous Power ' s model. The religious life of South Africa has been greatly strengthened by the earnest work of Miriam Reilly and Virginia Gravatt. It is said that the latter went along to sell ice cream and peanuts to the natives. Miss Mary Kinney of Kalamazoo, N. Y., is again rated the best-dressed woman of the year by Harper ' s Bazaar, which is now edited by Miss Virginia Allen. Joe McLaney, who is professor of physics at Queens College, made a startling statement the other day. Professor McLaney challenged, Well, what ' sit gonna be? You gonna straighten up back there? It is rumored that Albert Price, leader of the nation ' s number one dance band, comes back to Charlotte on week-ends to date sophomores at Central. Jackie Jordan is a famous dress designer in Paris. Bartow Garrett has suddenly become famous by his invention of a machine which, Mr. Garrett guarantees, will detect what a woman is going to say next. (Why this should be such an issue, I certainly don ' t know.) The machines are selling faster than the Carson-Morrow Company can manufacture them, state Mr. Bob Carson and Mr. Harold Morrow, heads of the concern. Southern California ' s new coach is Tommy Har- ris. He and Mrs. Harris, formerly Miss Miriam hen- hour, are living in a bungalow in the San Fernando Valley. A fence isn ' t the only thing running around Tommy ' s and Mop ' s house. Lem Whitsett has become a radio news commenta- tor. Don ' t fail to hear Off-the-Subject Whitsett. Ben Cathey is the proud owner of a two hundred acre chicken farm. Mr. Cathey takes pride in his fine stock of three-legged chickens. This means one-half dozen drumsticks for every two of the birds. Lawton Patterson has acquired a great reputa- tion as an English professor. One of his iron-clad rules is that no pupil be allowed to whisper above the top of his voice. It is rumored that the motion picture academy award will again this year go to that glamorous actress, Amor Lamour Amor, better known to us as Meme Burnside. Bill Johnson is writing a book, My Life Behind the ' 8 ' Ball, or Low Man Pays Off. Duke Hospital claims Suzanne Small as head lab- oratory technician. Ida Constable is head of the research department of DuPont. She has compounded a secret formula, CB2WX01QR6831. No chemist has been able to explain this, not even Miss Constable. Rae Anna Downey is running the Tootsie Woot- sie Dancing School. Ken Williams, Charlotte ' s most popular dentist, is president of the North Carolina Dental Society. Patty Teagle is the press agent for the new con- cert star, Miss Averill Lawson. The Navy Department is complaining because Mrs. Coyte Abemathy , the former Miss Betty Barnhardt, insists on hooking her houseboat onto the back of Admiral Abernathy ' s warship. Wint Holtzclaw, famed composer, has just pub- ■ lished his latest song, Pell-Mell Nell. Jimmy Stroupe, manager of radio station WHIZ encourages the women of Charlotte to listen to Harriet Thtgpen ' s morning chat, Hattie ' s Helpful Hints for Helpless Housewives. Nancy Reid is in Reno again. This makes her fifth trip. Nancy Blanton ' s all-girl orchestra is a big hit on Broadway. Ed Laity is acclaimed one of the greatest preachers the South has ever produced. Bill Dyer is president of the Bank of New York. Mr. Dyer is said to be worth at least five million. The New York Yankees won the pennant again this year with Bruce Moody and Jimmy Eskridge playing throughout the season. We ' ll all remember Mrs. Eskridge as Sara Boggs. Harry Maer is the script writer for the new radio show, It Pays to Be Uneducated. Bill Boyce is studying mathematics in Europe. Mr. Boyce states that Einstein ' s theory of relativity is really quite simple. Ed Nickel owns a chain of music stores through- out the South. According to Mr. Nickel, the most popular record of the week is Ricky Hassell ' s Love is Like Melting Snow, or Isn ' t This a Gushy Affair. Jimmy Reaves is on a short visit to the States. Mr. Reaves is a missionary to China. The biggest politician in the state is Frank New- ton. Senator Newton gains votes by kissing babies. Apparently the ex-governor has no age limit. Hoke Bullard, world famous surgeon, has just accepted the position as head of Johns Hopkins University Medical School. The Philharmonic Symphony takes pride in its possession of four outstanding musici ans, Jean Rob- inson. Martha Cail, Mary Adams, and Bob Campbell. Maestro Ken Clontz is directing the orchestra this season. Barbara Basinger and Jean Bookout have opened a beauty shop in Central ' s basement. Richard Parris is president of Eastern Air Lines. Marie Snelling and Ruth Sellers are conducting a series of world travel tours. Page Forty-eight SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Gene Graham owns a five hundred acre ranch in Arizona. Mr. Graham got rich quick when he struck oil while digging for fishing worms. No, it ' s not a dog catcher: it ' s only Ken Wilson chasing a dog that he intends to cut up in his lab- oratory for the benefit of his students. He is head of the Biology Department of Duke University. Tommy Lowing can be seen almost any day strutting around the city with a big cigar in one side of his mouth. He is the most prominent attor- ney in the state, and his friends are urging him to be in the governor ' s race next summer. Colbert Smith is editor of the New York Times. Nancy Shepherd has been made poet laureate of the United States. Some of Miss Shepherd ' s latest poems are Ode to the Humming Bird, Ode to Buttercups, and Ode to the Butcher (for one meat ball) . The faculty of Central has been lucky to acquire three fine new teachers this season, Carolyn Short, Barbara Lineberger, and Betty Jean Casey. All three confessed that their love for the ole school wouldn ' t let them get away. Buck Rudisill is still collecting ad-bills for the 1945 Snips and Cuts. Robert Parati is a noted artist. Mr. Parati has just finished a series of four pictures, The Horse, The Cow, The Pig, and The Horse, the Co w, and the Pig . Neal Forney is a famed playwright, producer, director, actor, and soda jerk. The Boar ' s Head has added a new bay window to accommodate its most faithful customer, Sheriff Basil Boyd. Mrs. Boyd, the former Miss Betty Wolfe. is also a great civic leader. It is rumored that Mary Lawless and Joanne Led- better have effected a cure for the hard of hearing. It is said that, if Miss Lawless and Miss Ledbetter can ' t make ' em hear, nobody can. Jane Lowing has been voted the most popular cover girl of the year. Joe Cherry established a record when he won the 299-mile Dash last year. Cornelia Ditto and Mane Cuthbertson are run- ning a fashionable girls ' school on the west coast of Florida. Do men run when you chase them with an iron poker? Do they back away when you lift a frying pan? Write to Miss Irwin ' s Irritating Items in the Chicago Tribune. Sally can give you many sug- gestions that will keep you from being so shy toward the opposite sex. The noted portrait painter, Miss Jane Davis, has just completed a full-length picture of the wealthy Miss Wooly Pop-gum Boyle. Miss Boyle made her millions in advertising for various chewing gum companies. Let it never be said that anyone else can . pop gum to the same degree that Miss Boyle has attained. The Hull-Spearman Construction Company has made plans for the tearing down of Rex ' s Pool Hall. Mr. Zack Hull and Mr. Jim Spearman, heads of the Construction Company, state that they regret that hundreds will be made homeless by the abolishment of this cultural center. The following headline appeared last week in the New York papers: Guy McFarland, Former Olym- pic Star, Elected Head Basketball Coach of Harvard University. Norman Smith and his daredevil riders staged a performance in Detroit last week. Mr. Smith is said to be the only racer ever to make a car leap over two buses, four trucks, and six automobiles and then come out alive. Mary Montague, Helen Tallent, and Mac Hood are running a health center in Kansas City. Harry Brown and Jimmy Shoemaker are partners in the Tiny Toys for Tiny Tots Corporation. Martha McGirt, Carolyn Byrd, Betty Austin, Frances Lazenby, and Anne Bumgardner form that famous quintet which is now entertaining in New York ' s Top Hat Nite Club. It is rumored that the proprietor, whose name has been kept secret, is none other than Shirley Tison, Helen Civil president of the Women ' s National Social Society, is at present touring the country, speaking to various organizations. It is said that Miss Civil ' s lectures will have great effects. (No one has questioned this.) Prod ucer Roy McKnight , of the McKnight Studios in Hollywood, has announced the completion of his latest picture, Mama ' s Little Angels, starring Bobby Twinkle Toes Conder, John Sweetie Face Caldwell, Tom Rosebud McCoy, and Bud Lily of the Valley Faggart. So it may be in the years to come. That this really may happen to some. But in the future when back we look We ' ll remember the phrase not learned in a book. The famous words, I repeat once more, Won ' t you please leave by the back door. Most sincerely, Your class prophet, Lillian DeArmon. Page Forty-nine SUMMER SCHOOL (1944) H. FOOTBALL CENTRAL 27; LENOIR 0 The Big Blue started the season by defeating a strong Lenoir team after being scorelessly tied at the close of the first half. All three teams saw service, and the second team made a stub- born goal line stand to hold the mountain boys scoreless. Bartow Garrett starred during the game with two good passes to Gene Graham. Richard Foard carried the ball on a 49-yard end run for the third touchdown. Spike Cofer intercepted a pass to set up the fourth goal. CENTRAL 0— ATLANTA TECH 25 Central went down, but not without a fight against a rough, tough Tech eleven. The Cat team played one of its best games and looked good even in defeat. Bobby Conder and Cap- tain Harris turned in the best performances for the defense; Jimmy Shoemaker and Harry Ben- ton for the offense. The final whistle interrupted a Cat drive on the Atlanta 30-yard line. CENTRAL 0; GREENSBORO 6 Injuries from the Atlanta game hampered the Wildcats, and they bowed before the Purple Whirlwind. Harry Benton ' s punting was the only outstanding feature of the Centrals ' game. CENTRAL 7; WINSTON-SALEM 13 Injuries still plagued the Cats in this all- important Western Conference game. A promis- ing drive toward goal was stopped by the final whistle. Fumbles handicapped the Centrals in the first half. McKnight ' s 28-yard pass to Graham brought the Cat team its only score. Jimmy Shoemaker booted the extra point. Footsie Woods. W. A. Richard, Dr. Roy Mcknight, Bill Brannin. Page One Hundred Thirty-two FOOTBALL CENTRAL 56; GAFFNEY 0 The Wildcats snapped its losing streak by scoring at least twice in every period and three times in the third during the game with the Sandlappers. Flashy Dave Barnette, who rolled up 175 yards in 7 tries for an average of 25 yards per carry was the star of the night. Dave topped it off in the final quarter with an 89- yard sprint through the center of the Gaffney line. CENTRAL 39; ASHEVILLE 7 Our Double-Wing Wonders went for five tallies to hand Asheville its first defeat in four years. Trackster Roy McKnight went over for two scores on beautiful runs of 75 and 25 yards, while Jarrin ' Jimmy Shoemaker plunged for three more. Asheville ' s only score came on a blocked punt which was recovered in the end zone. CENTRAL 20; HIGH POINT 0 Richard Foard. Jimmy Shoemaker, and Joe Parks accounted for touchdowns against a tough High Point outfit. The entire team played a magnificent game. Especially fine play was given by Bobby Conder. Irving Bubeck, and Captain Harris. CENTRAL 52; COLUMBIA 0 Even the third team came out against a Columbia team that resorted to bad sportsman- ship in the final quarters. Harry Benton, ace punter, scored his first touchdown on a pretty run after grabbing a lateral pass from Gene Graham. Spike Cofer played a standout game by driving across for three of our eight tallies. CENTRAL 20; GASTONIA 0 In the homecoming game the Cats showed how to ground the famed Gaston passing attack. The Wave ' s running attack was held to minus eleven yards by Central ' s fast charging line. The passing was held to four completions in eleven trys. A quartet of Central backs Rich- ard Foard, Bartow Garrett, Jimmy Shoemaker, and Roy McKnight— displayed smooth team work in both offensive and defensive plays. CENTRAL 12; SALISBURY 6 The Big Blue triumphed in spite of the 15- man Salisbury team; three touchdowns were called back by the Salisbury officials. Graham and Shoemaker rang up the winning scores. Piston-legged Richard Foard made much yard- age on reverses. CENTRAL 18; KNOXVILLE 7 Playing possibly its best game, the Wildcats of 1 944 finished the season with a hard-earned victory over the Tennesseans. Smart quarter- backing by Co-Captain Gene Graham spelled the difference. The entire team played hard, fast ball in one of the most interesting games of the year. mDDLE W ROW y,i r T« C ° V . inBt r ' LaWing ' G0rd0n ' Carr ' Durham - B , Toomer, Conder Dyer G r a h DD C L o E ach RC W ooc 1 COaCh own ' Buoeek, Tidd y , DaVant , Harris. BASKETBALL The 1945 Silver Streaks under the expert guidance of Coach Bill Brannin had the most successful season they have had in a number of years. After a slow start the Centrals came through with the City Championship for the first time in three years and held the fourth place berth in the Western Conference. The loss of Co-Captains Ben Cathey and Bobby Carson slowed the Streaks ' pace at the beginning of the season, but they soon caught on to win 14 and lose 8 of their 22 games. Benner Crigler, the Streaks ' red headed for- ward, won first place in Western Conference scoring with 131 points and high city scoring with a total of 220 points. Bill Fowler, Leland Helms, and Bartow Gar- rett alternately paced the Streaks, and each broke into the upper scoring bracket at various times during the season. All three showed unusual aggressiveness which, along with their scoring, helped to bring this season up to expectations. Jimmy Spearman played with his usual con- sistency and dependability, and contributed a lot of hard work under the basket. Among the subs, Artie Capper and Guy McFarland were standouts. Receiving letters were: Jimmy Spearman, Bill Fowler, Benner Crigler, Leland Helms, Bartow Garrett, Guy McFarland, Hubert Moseley, Arthur Capper, Bob Chapman, and Bob Foster. With- out your taking over and carrying the job to the finish, I would have never been able to come to Duke before June. You have done a swell job, and I am sure the folks at Central would be very grateful to you if they knew how very difficult it was for you to take over a job partially done and carry it through. On my behalf and also that of the senior class of Central, thank you, Bill, for being Editor of Snips and Cuts from March until June. Sincerely, Jack Freeze, Editor.
