Our class entered Central with enthusiastic anticipation of the coming events of our high school life. Little did we dream that in two years many of our members would be serving in the armed forces of our nation. Despite Pearl Harbor and the declaration of war which followed, it was a great year for our class, full of new experiences, new friendships, and social activities. However, many interests developed aside from normal peacetime activities. Our class entered wholeheartedly into the various programs relative to the war effort: the Cen- tral High School Cadet Corps, Red Cross. Pirst Aid Classes, salvage campaigns, and the sale of war bonds and stamps. As leaders for our sophomore year, we chose first semester: Jane Scarborough, president: Bill Wil- cox, vice-president: Bill Stokes, treasurer: Laurie Clark, secretary: second semester: Bill Christiansen. president: Bill Miller, vice-president: Kenneth Young. treasurer: Jane McCord, secretary. Miss Louise Hutch- ison was our class adviser. In sports the boxing team contributed heavily to what might have been a dull year for our athletic teams. Under the guidance of Miss Mary Louise Cireen, the dramatic department presented two hits, Stage Door and Seventeen. The band was rewarded for its splendid work with an invitation to the Music Educators' Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In the spring of 1942. the Spanish Fiesta furnished Central with the entertainment highlight of the year. We opened our junior year on a new schedule. As a result of lengthened periods. of which there were to be only six a day, several of our normal activities were curtailed. Noon movies ceased to exist, chem- istry became a one period affair, and the Lace ana' Pia Iron, one of the three large Central publications, was only a memory. Dur band lost its able and popu- lar leader, Lonnie Sides, and was reduced to half the size of previous years. Our class officers for the first semester were Bill Stokes, president: Marguerite Johnson, vice-president: Jane McCord, secretary: Kenneth Young, treasurer: second semester, Bill Christiansen, president: Wylie Orr, vice-president: Ralph Bostian. secretary: Lucy Hill Baxter, treasurer. John H. Norman was our class adviser. Bill Christiansen and Mildred Graham were elected from our class to the ofiices of treasurer and secretary respectively of the Student Council for the first semester. In the second semester we chose our Junior Marshals with Bill Christiansen as the Uchief. Page Thirty-ezghl During our junior year Central really began to feel the effects of the war. Even then our boys were beginning to join the armed forces. Despite the diffi- culties our dance committee gave us several successful dances during the year. The dramatics department presented two great hits, The Man Who Came to Dinner and You Can'r Take It Wz'th You. In the spring Central presented one of the finest variety shows in its history. Despite the break in our ranks as a result of sum- mer graduating classes, and the large number of boys going into the armed services. our senior year was an outstanding one in the history of our school. Under the guidance of Pat Stephens, our Student Council president, a peak in school spirit and co- operation between students and faculty was reached. With the enthusiastic support of our entire student body, our football team through the fine coaching of Vince Bradford and his able assistants won the West- ern Conference title, and defeating Raleigh, Eastern Conference winner, for the state championship, accepted an invitation to play Miami High School in the Orange Bowl stadium. Assistant Pat Stephens at the helm of the Student Council for the first semester were Mildred Graham. vice-president: Martha Ann Hull, secretary: Bobby Carson. treasurer. Gur popular and capable Pat Ste- phens was re-elected as president for the second semes- ter. The other officers were Harold Bursley, vice-presi- dent, Arleen Palmer. secretary: Calvin Overcarsh, treasurer. We elected as our senior class officers first semester: Erank Horne, president: Harold Bursley, vice-presi- dent: Arlene Palmer, secretary: Jewel Ross, treasurer. Second semester officers were Stewart Yandle, presi- dent: Eugene Hunter, vice-president: Mary Jane Mc- Gee, secretary: Jean Thompson, treasurer. The Daughters of the American Revolution added another name to the long list of outstanding girls of Central High School when it presented to Mary Stuart Hatch its coveted yearly award. The Student Council presented a very successful operetta, Hats Ohf, March 22 to 23. Jean Cushman and Bill Stapleton starred in the singing leads. Unlike other years, the demands of global war altered the outlook and future plans for many. Some of our classmates left school to go forth to the far flung ields of service for our nation. Many more were soon to follow. The pleasant memories of three years at Central High School went with all to the difficult years ahead. NORMAN E. GRIPFIT1-1. JR., Historian. Plzophecy, 79 4 This is your daily reporter coming to you from the heart of New York, U. S. A. I bring you first world news and events: Pat Stephens, strict advocate of The Rights of American Women, is succeeding, it seems, to have the Constitution amended so that it will be possible for a woman to be President of The United States. Probably the most startling news of the day is that Bob Warmbold. America's No. l playboy, has informed this reporter that he has a job, Don't believe it until you see it. Patricia Cansler, famed cross-country walker, has just broken her 1953 record walk from Washington to New York. John Bachman, owner of Bachman Motor Cor- poration, has perfected a new amphibious flying auto. John says he will retire soon. Loomis Eox, former U. S. Army Air Corps Cap- tain, is now chief test pilot for Caneron Aircraft. It is rumored that Senator Eugene Hunter, former Infantry sergeant, will run for Governor of North Carolina in the coming election, Professor Tom Stewart, head of the physics de- partment at the University of Chicago, was recently awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of peroxene, a bleaching agent far more effective than peroxide. Murray CGreekj Beasley, who is dissatisned with the new reconstruction program of Greece, is plan- ning to overthrow the present government and estab- lish himself as head of the New Regime. Harold Bursley, president of American Distilleries. Inc., a strict antiprohibitionist, appeared before a Senate investigating committee today. Bursley stated that prohibition not only would break the morale of millions of Americans, but would mean financial ruin for himself. ON BROADWAY After years of unsuccessful attempts to become a famous bandleader, Ervin Hinkle and his worn-out followers are still living on the eighty dollars they made from the B, G. S. Club dance ten years ago. Let's Em Has It One Time, is playing its four- teenth consecutive week on Broadway. This terrific comedy is starring Jack Sideman and Ann Seanor. Take it from this reporter and see the three Broadf way Wilds, i'Blondie Green, Mil Graham. and Elashy MacDougall, at the gala opening of the Roxy Theater this week. Also featured with Red Greene, the crooner, tonite on station AKAY. HOLLYWOOD Screen actress Jean Anderson has broken her con- tract with MGM studios, Reports say that she will act in nothing but cowboy roles. Producer Norman Black is said to be having con- siderable trouble with some Hollywood actresses. Black's ex-wives in the cast are probably the trouble. SPORT NEWS Head football coach of Notre Dame, Bags Beten- baugh. has completed his fifth consecutive year there, We have been informed that heavyweight boxing champion of the world, Jimmy Eurr, will take his leave from the ring soon. His title will be given back to ex-champ, Joe Louis. The champ's manager, Bill Strange, said that they would both retire to their pastime as pool sharks. Bill Christiansen is defending his title as tennis champion of the world this week in England. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES After ten years of making up and breaking up, Mary Jane McGee and General Ralph Bostian of the American Air Eorces are expected to wed soon. Mrs. Jane McCord Rike is giving a charity ball this week-end at her home on Riverside Drive. With the completion of the 3500.000 Barons Country Club overlooking Lake Champlain, a formal dance will be given by the club members. Attending will be the strict society of New York. The former Miss Martha Ann Hull was seen shop- ping in Paris' bargain basement recently. Her fifth husband is in town on a billiard exhibition. That's all the news for now, Americans, so stand by until tomorrow when I will bring you more highlights and happenings of the day. Until then, good luck to you. and I do mean you. JOHN CIVIL. Central High School has yielded to the same forces that ask for a shorter period of training so that young men and young women will have completed their high school work and some of their college work before they are accepted in the armed forces. The present class is the first one under the new program and represents a genuine change. All of the gradu- ates have taken one course and many of them two courses in summer school, They will go to college, into the armed forces, or into business less mature and less extensively educated than if they had spent three years in senior high school: nevertheless. they have been considered' individually and have met the require- ment of sixteen units of credit: furthermore, they will have their diplomas, a requisite for employment and for promotion in most any business or branch of service. The Board of Education is glad that it has been possible to make the arrangements for them to complete their work during the summer. Page Forty-three ' Ham 0 ' FIRST SEMESTER CAROLYN BYRD ..., ..,... The Centrals functioned smoothly throughout with the entire team playing standout ball. CENTRAL 27: SPARTANBURG O Spartanburg's green eleven was no match for the powerful Blue and Gray here. and the second team saw service for the Wildcats most of the way. High- stepping tailback, Ed Charles, scoring twice, was the Cat star. All-state Buck McGraw and Walter Betenbaugh led the fast charging Charlotte line. CENTRAL 6: GREENSBORO 0 KB Cats third straight victim in the first Western X-Conference game of the season before 7 O00 at the stadium. Hard driving Jimmy .Shoemaker copped a Defending state champ, Creensboro, became the 1 X '70-yard drive in the third period to score from the - ne-yard line for the only points. The game was one f the hardest won of the entire season. CENTRAL 123 WINSTON-SALEM O The Central High grid aggregation took its first out-of-town trip and upset Reynolds High of Win- ston-Salem, its greatest obstacles to the Western Conference crown, 12-0. Little Nick Floros set up both Central scores by two beautiful runs, and on both occasions Shoemaker blasted it over. CENTRAL 0: RALEIGH 28 Raleigh's mighty Caps snapped the Cats' win- ning streak at four straight, completely humbling the Wildcats at the State Capital. The Centrals never got past their own 43-yard line. A 70-yard jaunt by Raleigh's smooth running Jordon on the first play from scrimmage put the Wildcats in a hole from which they never quite recovered. CENTRAL O: AsHEv1LLE 33 Two amazingly fast Scar-backs, Neil Justice and Billy Britt, combined to hand Central its second straight crushing defeat here in Memorial Stadium. Although the Cats played good football, they couldn't stop Justice and Britt. All of Asheville's points came on broken field runs and long passes. Jnnfball, CENTRAL 27: HIGH POINT 7 Central happily snapped its two-game losing streak here by defeating the Bisons from High Point 27 to 7. Well led by Jimmy Eskridge and Jim Shoemaker. the Cats showed aggressive power which the Pointers cou.ldn't match. The winning of this game put the Wildcats into uncontested lead for the conference title. CENTRAL 20: CoLUIvIEIA 6 Shoemaker was the outstanding ace as Central invaded South Carolina to hand the Sandlappers a licking. Jim scored twice, once on a 50-yard run. Buck McGraw scored another tally after intercept- ing a pass and running 37 yards. Fred Boger blocked a punt for an automatic safety. CENTRAL 14: GASTONIA 6 The title-bound 'lCats got their biggest scare of the year in Gastonia but managed to pull through after the Green Wave had scored first. Although fast and tricky, they were no match for Central's power and drive. Shoemaker blasted over for the first tally, and Boger converted for the extra point, making it 7-6. Jim hurled to Gene Graham for the second score and Boger again converted. CENTRAL 20: SALISBURY 6 The Western Conference Championship title was once more clinched by the Wildcats as they rolled over the visitors from Salisbury. The starters played less than half of the game, and the reserves more than held their own against the underdogs from Boyden High. CENTRAL 7. RALEIGH O The biggest night in Central's l943 football sea- son was the night the Wildcats played Raleigh for the State Class A Championship. Although beaten by Raleigh earlier in the year 28-O, and heavy under- dogs in pre-game predictions, the Cats showed superior power all through the game. which payed oil' in a 7-O margin. The score was made by Tail- back Ed Charles on a beautiful 70-yard run. CENTRAL O: MIAMI, FLA. 45 It was indeed a great honor to receive an invita- tion for a post-season game December lOth in Miami, Florida, and it was no dishonor that the Centrals, playing under different weather conditions. and play- ing the best high school team in the South, were defeated. The Miami team scored by sensational methods seven times. Central, with Ed Charles, Jim Shoemaker, and Buck McGraw starring, were stopped just short of scores five times. This closed one of the 'AWildcats' greatest and most colorful seasons. The Streaks didn't quite get started: even though they came close to win- ning most of their games. they just couldn't find the power and push to come out on top. It can be honestly said. however. that the boys played good, hard basket- ball at all times. and had it not been for a lag in spirit at critical points, the record would have been much better. Playing in the post-season Western Conference tour- 41 I V ney in High Point, the Centrals were eliminated in the first round by a powerful team from Greensboro, 39-27. Repeating last year's performance and for the second time in Central's history. the Streaks lost the city-Wide tournament by dropping two games to Harding and two to Tech. The 1945 outlook is very bright for Central, as most of the varsity is returning. Receiving letters this year were Bobby Carson. Jimmy Spearman. Captain Dave Foreman, Bobby Mosely, Herman King, Bob Chapman, Ben Cathey, and Guy McFarland. High scorer of the season was Lew Mendler, who racked up a total of 103 points in eight games.
