The graduates are going forth into a world which is new and strange to most of them. A world that neither giues quarter nor asks quarter will be a far different place from the Central which you haue known and loved these years. All of us, both those remaining at Central and the graduates, are facing World War II, the most destruc- tive and most disastrous war in our history. Let us fthe students of today! with our knowledge of fair- ness and of democracy learned at Central, help make a lasting peace. In the future we hope that you can look back at this book and remember the happy days of your youth. EUICHTIU TO those boys in the service who have at one time been students at Central High School, this book is humbly dedicated. For a service such as they are rendering we can never express enough gratitude. but we can through the following pages present to them a few beloved memories of the school dear to all their hearts. We hope that they will all come home soon, but until they do and after they are here, they can consider this book all theirs. In Hkmunlnm .ff . In a few days we had fallen into the routine of the school: we subscribed to the Rambler, went to the noon movies, and helped cheer the football team to victory, Before long we were well represented on the athletic teams, in the school clubs, and in the band, orchestra and chorus. During that first year we elected the following to lead us: First semester, Bob Kirby, president: Esther Crockford, vice-president: Taylor Leonard, secretary: and Leslie Heath, treasurer, Second semester, Vance Derby was president: Leslie Heath, vice-presi- dent: Bob Kirby, secretary: Bill Scruggs, treasurer: and Miss Eleanor Markham, our adviser. Central's athletic teams piled up record after record, while the Music Department made a pilgrimage to Richmond where they spread the fame of Central. The trip was a success, and everyone had a big time. A flu epidemic in January gave us extra holidays, but kept us working way into the burning days of June before we ended our Sophomore year. We started our junior year by choosing Gus Karres as our class president with Steve Fellos as vice-president, Lib Helms, secretary, and Retta Augh- try, treasurer. In early fall we helped play host to the North Carolina State Student Council Congress, and at that time Leslie Heath was elected president of the Congress. Then one Sunday morning Jap bombs dropped on Pearl Harbor and started things moving in Central, A Cadet Corps, captained by Wallace Orr, was organ- ized to help prepare us for military service. Red Cross committees went to work. Waste paper was collected, and war bonds and stamps were sold. Central began to be a war-time school. The second semester found Bill Scruggs our leader, Nancy Jane Ansley, vice-president: Oscar Miller, secretary: and Bob Kirby, treasurer. Early in spring castanets began to click, the music of the rumba and tango Hoated through the air and Central's Hrst Spanish Fiesta swang into action. The Fiesta was a grade A successor to the Saint Patrick's Day Carnival which had been held prior to this. Ben Ivey, Student Council Treasurer, with the help of a good part of the student body put in a great deal of hard work to make it the success it was. The dramatics department entertained us with two plays, Stage Door and A'Seventeen, and the Dance Committee gave us some swell dances. Bill Scruggs became Chief Marshal bringing to an end the events of our junior year, and we were ready to step into the role of seniors. Page Fifty Our senior year opened with a schedule of six periods, each an hour long, and a course in aero- nautics added. Because of the reduction in the num- ber of periods, several of our activities were hurt. Lace and Pig Iron ceased to be, and the band was half the size it had been in previous years. The first semester officers were John Byrd, presi- dent: Jane Irvin, vice-president: Tom McNeil, secre- tary: Mitchell Hargett, treasurer. Bill Scruggs was made editor of SNIPS AND CUTS, with Henry Alexander its business manager. Bob Kirby was president of the Student Council, and Paul Berg led the football team through many a tough fight. During the year we were honored by the appearance of two nationally prominent speakers, Walter E, Myer, editor of the American Observer, and Joseph C. Cirew, former ambassador to Japan. After the first semester boys started leaving right and left for the army, navy, and marines: while many went to college to get some college training before entering the service. With a much reduced population Central carried on with Nancy Jane Ansley as president of the senior class: Tommy Stroupe, vice-president: Mary Irvin, secretary: and Jeanne Simpson, treasurer. Retta Aughtry stepped into the office of president of the Student Council and the different committees started right to work. Because of the ban on pleasure driving, we had our Hrst informal dances, from 7 until ll o'clock, which were a success due to the hard work of Tommy Stroupe and the Dance Com- mittee. Pat Stevens and her Bond and Stamp Com- mittee put high pressure on the stamping out the Axis campaign, selling enough stamps to buy a jeep for the army and starting right in on a torpedo for the navy. The Student Assembly was active, dis- cussing beginning an honor system at Central and seeking ways to improve school spirit. After the splendid hit, A'The Man who Came to Dinner, the dramatics club produced the classic of American hits, 'AYou Can't Take It With You. Mary Christianson's name was added to the list of Central's Great when she won the coveted D. A. R. Award. Three art students, Marjorie Morgan Bart- lett, Lucy Hill Baxter, and Ida Jones Phelps, won prizes in a poster contest sponsored by the W. A. A. C.'s. Now with the hustle and bustle of our last days at Central before we start out on different roads, it's hard to realize three years have slipped by and we are about to find our high school days ended. So with reluctance, we bid farewell to Central. KINLOCH RIVERS, Historian. PRIIPHEIIY CHARLOTTE OBSERVER June 2, 1951 CHARLOTTE PEOPLE IN THE NEWS SPORTS . . . They dance and play while our boys drill: They are taught to love, and We to kill. We have nothing to fear from 'men of good will'. H It is true we have cheered our juvenile sports: We have danced, We have played while the Nazis drill. But we will not falter: We have not forgotten The words of Lincoln: they are with us still, We have forged at school the weapons of thought With which all tyrannies are fought: Our vision will shatter their world to nought. We will fight for the freedom of all the earth: We will march with the flag of truth held high. Armed with the guns of a nation's ideals, We will shape their defeat with triumphant cry. --VIRGINIA SCOTT Page Filly-Ih .Ill lllll MARSHMS First row: Lucy Hill Baxter, Jean Thompson, Jean Quinn, Bill Christiansen, chief mar- shal, Mildred Graham, Wiley Orr, assistant chief, Mary Jane McGee, Dorothy Deal, Arlene Palmer, Patricia Cansler, Mary Stuart Hatch. What seemed to be one of the best teams in Central's history showed power and hard running, only to be beaten by a smooth running attack that kept the Wild- cats in their own territory most of the game. The team showed fine prospects in reserves, but were completely outclassed in field gen- eralship. CENTRAL 20--BARIUM SPRINGS O Our Wildcats found themselves in the sec- ond game and rolled over Barium Springs 20 to O for the Hrst one-sided defeat in years. Decker lead the Cats in their powerful offen- sive with long runs throughout the game. Charlie Long plunged over for two scores from his fullback position. CENTRAL 6-GREENsBoRo 20 Central started off with a bang in this Hrst conference game of the season, scoring two touchdowns in the iirst three minutes of the game: one being called back for offsides. But Greensboro came back with a smashing attack and a combination of plays which baffled the Wildcats. Decker passed brilliantly to Miller, Berry and MacGraw and Kinsey played well in the line. Captain Berg played an outstand- ing game but was injured at the end of the ha-lf. CENTRAL 26-WINSTON-SAl.EM O The Wildcats rolled once again as they cleanly beat a lighter Winston team 26-0. The win placed the Centrals in good posi- tion in the Western Conference. Ted Decker and Earl Miller starred with brilliant runs throughout the game. Berg and Williams played well in the line. CENTRAL 6-RALEIGH 12 One of the States most powerful elevens invaded the Wildcats' stomping grounds and handed the Centrals their third defeat of the season. Central looked well the first half and Puqe One lltznzlrfrl Fiqh! lead 6 to 0, only to be tied in the third quarter. Raleigh came through in the closing minutes of the game to run off tackle for the winning score. Berg, Decker and Long played well for the Wildcats. CENTRAL OfvASHEVlLLli 35 Central was again defeated by the State's most powerful team, the Asheville Moun- taineers. Completely outclassed, the Wildcats never went on the offensive. In the losing cause Miller punted sensationally and Decker turned in another good performance. CENTRAL O-HIGH POINT 19 The Black Bisons of High Point, State Champions, added one more black mark on the Wildcats record to defeat our Centrals 19 to 0. Central remained unimpressive in its fifth loss of the season. The Wildcats were hampered by injuries and were unable to use several lirst stringers. CENTRAL 12-COLUMBTA 0 Central showed its old fire once again in completely outclassing a powerful eleven from South Carolina. Charlie Long, Dick Hoover and Earl Miller were the local standouts in the backfleld, Harris, starting center, turned in a creditable performance. CENTRAL 6--GAsToN1A 3 5 A fast tricky Greenwave from Gastonia completely baffled our Wildcats in our last home game to score three touchdowns in the first quarter and keep a substantial lead throughout the game. Trick plays, even the age-old Statue of Liberty, featured the fast moving action furnished by a well coached team from across the river. The defeat placed Central out of the Conference running. CENTRAL 0'-SALISBURY 13 Central's last game of the season was marred by a faster Boyden High eleven which scored in the opening minutes and held the lead throughout the game. The Wildcats opened up with a passing attack featuring Decker to Earl Miller and Oscar Miller. Kin- sey played a good game for his last per- formance. Page One Hundred Tm BASKETBAH Central High's 1943 Silver Streak cage quin- tet, starting the season late with not one let- terman returning, had Lady Luck's ill will throughout. What the Streaks lacked in skill and experience they made up in spirit and light, but this was not quite enough to surmount the advantage held by most of their foes. In the absence of a regular mentor, the quint was coached by Jack Nantz of the Charlotte Y. M. C. A. Guard Dave Foreman was team captain, and was re-elected for the 1944 season. The Streaks celebrated their belated opener on February 2 by downing Tech, 26-22. From there on out in the regular season, however, they were not to know victory. The Centrals lost six straight to fives from Harding, Gastonia, Morris Field Airbase, and to Tech in a return encounter. After the close of the oliicial campaign. the Central cagers were eliminated by Greensboro in the first round of the Western conference tourney in High Point and by Davidson High in the semi-Hnals of the City-County meet here. Forward Lew Mendler was chosen on the first all-tournament team in the latter meet, as well as leading all scorers with 30 points, Captain Foreman and Guard Steve Fellos were hon- ored on the second team. For the first time in history a Central ath- letic team dropped the city championship, Hard- ing taking two straight from the Streaks and three out of four from Tech to capture the diadem. In l944 things look brighter for the Cen- tral basketball hopes, as almost the entire var- sity will return. Receiving letters this year were Dave Fore- man, Lew Mendler, Steve Fellos, Paul Long, Tommy Harris, Bobby Carson, Sammy Camp- bell, Jim Baynard, Ralph Williams, Robert Beaver, and Manager Harry Benton. es I .
