“
Here, standing in front of the institution of which we are justly proud, is our friendly, thoughtful and sincere Principal. Dr. Elmer H. Garinger, who has on so many occasions made trying moments pass quickly and easily for all of us. In his office, in the halls and on the grounds, the Doctor is always a cordial friend who helps us through our every worry. High ideals, both in the classroom and on the field, are his constant practice, and his teachings try in every way to make us tomorrow ' s better citizens. Because of all that he has done for the students and for Central High School, the staff of the 1940 Snips and Cuts hereby affectionately dedicates this Volume to our beloved Principal and friend. OREWDRD Another enjoyable year of work and play is swiftly drawing to a close. To many it is the finale of a high school career — may unbounded success be yours. For those who remain to complete their courses of study we wish every enjoyment in the activities and associations to be found at Central High School. In the pages to follow we have attempted, with camera and pen, to review the year. We have strived earnestly to have each student rep- resented in this Edition, and if in later years, through this medium, you may relive our high school days, the success of the 1940 Snips and Cuts will be assured. William Sinclair Howell, friendly, honest and cheerful. Buddy ' s memory is deeply en- graved on the hearts of all who knew and loved him. ADMINISTRATION fillPII Mr. Harry P. The committee under the direction of Paul Dulin got off to a late start when the first dance of the season was given on November 1 7th with a rather early Thanksgiving dance. Will you ever forget the amount of corn that managed to find its way over the floor? Next was the Christmas Invitational with its lovely decorations and unique lighting — college boys and pretty dresses. Julian Burroughs played for the February script which featured a bulletin board covered with comic Valentines of the famous people around Central. March ushered in Central ' s Improvement on Nature Dance — The Rainbow Script. The committee even arranged to have a pot of gold hanging at the ends of the rainbow. The April dance was fun — same crowd, good music, and the dance floor getting too hot for comfort. Junior-Senior Tea dance and Senior prom coming up — more elaborate plans than usual made for it and the year is over. A season of fun for all — DANCES. Page One Hundred Two CENTRAL HIGH .E7T ■! FOOTBALL FAYETTEVILLE Displaying exceptional talents in all de- partments of play, the Wildcats opened the season with a 51-0 victory over Fayetteville. As a preview of things to come, Coates, Harper, and Sideman ran wild, with Morris blocking perfectly. Karres outshone the other linemen all of whom played beautiful ball. BARIUM SPRINGS Bob Sideman ' s touchdown was the balance of victory over a traditionally light but scrappy Barium Springs eleven. Playing before a record crowd of almost 7,000, the Cats won their game the hard way, fighting for every inch of ground they gained. RICHMOND Entering the game as underdogs, Central ' s Wildcats outplayed John Marshall all the way and came up with a 12-0 victory. Coates provided the fireworks, returning a punt 86 yards for a touchdown and passing to Helms for a second. Morris shone defensively, while Karres, Ditto, Wheeler, and Poole were line stars. WINSTON Playing on their home field, Winston handed the Cats their first defeat of the season, 13-0. Bad breaks throughout the game pre- vented the Centrals from scoring. Coates ' kicking was a highlight, while Karres, Wheeler and Bethune in the line looked good, even in defeat. Brewer was the ball of fire for Winston. Two Central touch- downs which were called back and numerous penalties were the main factors in the defeat, as Charlotte outplayed Columbia all the way. Little, Coates, Wheeler, and Karres turned in the best performances for the Cats. GREENSBORO Again assuming the role of giant killers, the Wildcats bowled over Greensboro, 26-9, in a game packed with tension, although minus the services of blocking back Morris, who was lost due to appendicitis operation. Coates and Little ran wild behind a big blue line which refused to be turned back. mm SPARTANBURG The Wildcats rallied to victory again, this time with Spartanburg the victim. Led by Coates and Little, the Cats pushed across three touchdowns to defeat the Spartans 19-6. Central displayed a nice passing attack with Little tossing and Helms and Wheeler receiving. ATLANTA Tech High used its power and deception to down Central High ' s blue legions 34-7 before an extremely large crowd. Little started the scoring with an only touchdown for the Cats. The Wildcats put up a good fight, but this was the toughest game of the season. Paschal was the star for Atlanta. Atlanta ' s backfield with excellent blocking completely routed the Wildcats. Paschal running behind this interference did the greater part of the scoring. The Central ' s proved again that they were good losers as well as victors. HIGH POINT A sensational 108-yard return of the open- ing kickoff by Jack Little and a conversion by Jack Helms turned back High Point. 7-6, on their own field. Little ' s run was the most spectacular of the entire season, being one of the longest made in high school football. Karres, Bethune, Morrow, and Coates also played fine ball to bring victory to the Cats. ASHEVILLE The Cats closed their season with a bril- liant defeat of the Asheville squad. The pass- ing combinations found in our backfield proved the disaster of the Asheville eleven. Coates, Little, and Karres played splendid ball before a large Asheville crowd. Coach Bradford ' s first Central ball team showed great promise toward being future champions. The green team started slowly and as the season wore on improved rapidly. Against Spartanburg at home on February 6. they turned in their most thrilling per- formance of the year, when they beat Spar- tanburg 24 to 23 in the last few minutes of play. This was the first time Spartanburg had been beaten in 35 games, a pe rfect record over a 2-year span. At the end of the regular season the Silver Streaks contested Harding High ' s Golden Ram ' s in a two out of three series. Central won both games by handy margins and thus turning the city championship over to Central. The starting line-up of five little hustling Silver Streaks played most of the time, getting some help from the inexperienced second string. The line-up was as follows: Bill Freeze and John Muse as forwards, Captain Joe Moody at center. George Sherrill and E. P. Bethune as guards. Bob Sideman, Jack Little and David Coates played well all year being a big help to the tiring starting five. CENTRAL ' S BOXING TEAM Central ' s boxing team, undefeated in 16 matches, started their fistic campaign with Bessemer City. The score ended 9 to 1 in favor of Charlotte. Central ' s Donald Kinsey. in the I 4 5 - lb . class, scored the feature by a K.O. in one minute and five seconds of the first round. Central next stepped in to faster competition, this being administered by Winnsboro Royal Cords. The score ended 7 to 1 in favor of Charlotte with Dwight Moore in the feature bout of the evening. Hamlet next ventured to Charlotte to break the impressive record of the Wildcats, but failed by losing to Charlotte by a 7 to 3 margin. Pugilistic Greene drew the feature in a slam-bang drag out affair. Central ' s only revenge fight of the season was with the Savannah Boys ' High. This meet ended with the score 8 V? to Yi . This team last year came close to breaking the winning streak of the Wildcats. Captain Ray Kissiah featured in the evening ' s meet by taking the role of leadership and smoothly punching his way to victory. Central next ventured into the Cadet Class of Carlisle Prep. Central administered a thorough beating with the score ending 8 to 1. Central ' s Jimmie Meena made his first successful feature by flooring his opponent 14 times in a rousing bout. Central ventured to Atlanta to meet Boys ' Hi. This was Central ' s toughest opponent. The night ' s feature came when Central ' s Arbra Miller, after winning the first round, was K.O ' d. in one minute and 20 seconds of the second round. The score ended in Charlotte ' s favor by 51? to 2 1 2 ■Pete Balowsky and Captain Ray Kissiah won decisive victories over their respective opponents. Central ' s last meet was with the Georgia Military Academy. The Wildcats won their 23rd consecutive meet by downing this team by the margin of 5 to 3. Central ' s Jimmie Meena and Captain Kissiah were cut while on the sure road to victory. Idol. Moore, and Miller scored K.O ' s. We (the boxing team) contribute our success to Coach Vince Bradford. B TEAM BASKETEERS Again standing true to form this year ' s B squad did exceptionally well. Of the ten or more official games played, they remained undefeated throughout the season. The B squad is made up of the boys who are not experienced enough to play on the varsity. These boys are to be commended on the fine way they played this year. When scrimmaging the varsity, as they quite often did, the scores were very close, thereby making the varsity squad play much harder and better or be replaced by B squad members. The sparkplug of their attack was built around Brandes, center, and Livingston, for- ward. The remaining players and substitutes made this a well-rounded team. The B squad, as did the varsity, had a three-game series with the Harding Red Raid- ers. The B squad won all three by decisive scores. They also engaged the Y Juniors in a two game series, again winning both. Book 4 FEATURES SPONSORS Mrs. McAlister Carson McAlister Carson, Jr. Editor Snips and Cuts Mrs. H. B. We muse half-smilingly, half-sympathetically upon the bright-eyed bewilderment and eagerness registered on each of our faces as we stepped up the stairs and over the threshold to some new adventure. Picture the timidity and confusion which we soon overcame, for as time will have it and with experience as a teacher we became a vital part of this school ' s life. Robert Proctor was selected as president of our class for the first semester. For the second semester George Kenyon was elected. We had the privilege to be the first sophomore class to use the new music building and the new wing, which had been added the previous summer. The music department presented its first operetta, H.M.S, Pinafore. The football team made us still prouder by becoming State Champions. Exams — graduation of a most inspiring senior class — a summer passed — and we became juniors. Feeling we could now begin assuming more serious responsibili- ties, we became vitally interested in extra-curricular activities. Junior class presidents were George K enyon and John Kennedy. Edgar Pat- terson was elected as treasurer of the Student Council. Juniors played important roles in the presentations of The Queen ' s Husband and Pride and Prejudice. The Music Festival was held here in which the band and orchestra excelled in marching and playing. A second operetta, Pirates of Penzance, played before a large audience. We enjoyed the biggest carnival ever to be staged, which was held at the Armory Auditorium. The last of the year was filled by the prepara- tion of the junior-senior prom and graduation. Edgar Patterson and Robert Proctor were elected to usher another senior class which we had to bid farewell at commencement. And now at last — with profound pride we have stepped into the coveted position of seniors. For leaders of the first semester we chose George Kenyon as class president and John Kennedy as presi- ident of the student body. The Student Council moved into its new office. It was here that plans were formulated for such occasions as the visits of Dr. Elbert K. Fretwell. eminent educator of Columbia University, Dr. Richard M. Gummere of Harvard, and the South Piedmont High School Conference. The council introduced such new activities as afternoon dances and student forums. The Music Department put on The Bohemian Girl. The Dramatics Department surpassed its former performances with The Bishop Misbehaves and Tawing of the Shrew. The captains of football were Billy Morris and Fred Amon; Basketball, Joe Moody and E. P. Bethune. These departments, as well as those of baseball, tennis, boxing, and track may well boast of excellent records. The editors of the school publications were: SNIPS AND CUTS. McAlister Carson, Jr.; The Rambler, Ernest Frankel; Lace and Pig Iron, Nancy Goodwin. David Alexander was chosen president of the Honor Society. With the beginning of a new semester new officers were elected. Tom Payne became senior class president, and Anne Dichtenmueller, Central ' s candidate for the D. A. R. Citizenship Award, became president of the student body. All too soon passes our senior year. From the joviality of the carnival to the seriousness of considering our college and business lives, we shall go to the gayety of the junior-senior prom, to the sadness of commencement. For the first time in the history of Central the status quo has been altered, for a Senior banquet is substituted for the Senior Breakfast and Class Day Exercises. The officers will be Paul Dulin, prophet; John Kennedy, lawyer; Suzanne Walker, poet; Sara Brownlee, artist; Anne Dichtenmueller, historian. The Mascots will be Phyllis Barnette and Harry Brownlee. When graduation is all over we can look back at ourselves again. This time we will remember a long double file of dignified boys and girls with all the assurance of youth receiving our diplomas. Again we will realize that we have stepped over the threshold of another new adventure. What is ahead for us? Who knows — but we are grateful to Central for preparing us so well for our future. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the greatest, most super-supreme class, of the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and forty, being in a state of super-colossal, magnetic, magnificent, magnanimous magnanimity, and believing ourselves to be in a state of mendacious mentality, having with groans of the spirit and convulsions of the cerebrum calculated with a calculation both calamitous and caliginous our- selves to be for the most part about to be thrust from these sheltering battle- ments, where we have been so long and so tenderly spared the acrimonious winds — chilling, but not so unkind as man ' s ingratitude — of the sardonic world, and having persuaded ourselves with numerous indubitable arguments that we, the greatest, most super-supreme class, of the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and forty, ought not to deny to posterity those qualities and idiosyn- cracies which have characterized our humble selves and which we have proved to be essential to true greatness, do enact, ordain, and establish this our last will and testament. As Mr. William Shakespeare has sagaciously declared, Herein lives wisdom, beauty, and increase much too fair to be death ' s conquest and make worms their heir. (Signed) THE CLASS OF 1940 (Per) John Kennedy, Jr., Attempt -at -Law. WITNESSES: Jeane Keeter, Miss Eleanor Markham, Robert Proctor. THE RAMBLER Vol. XVIII Central High School, March 1, 1960 No. 12 MAYOR KENNEDY VISITS CENTRE GIVES VIEWS ON LIBRARY SITUATION Mayor John P. Kennedy took time off from his duties at the City Hall yesterday long enough to call on his old school and give his opin- ion of the current problem facing the students. As most of you know, we are 2,000,000 books short of the number required to remain in the Southern Association of Secondary Schools. Don ' t worry, students, said the mayor, When I was a student here at Central they were threaten- ing to drop us from the Association and have been doing it every year since then. CENTRAL ' S R.O.T.C. UNIT TO CO TO CAMP The R. O. T. C. unit will leave tomorrow morning for Fort Sag, where they will encamp for two weeks. The unit, 400 strong, will travel by special train as far as Snake Hollow Junction, hoofing it from there to get in training. Ser- geant Hutchison Butch Sullivan, will be in charge of the trip, under orders from Colonel Robert Hipp at Headquarters. During their encampment, the boys will engage in target practice, map planning, camouflage tactics, and hop-scotch, said Sergeant Jim Dalton, camp director. SENIOR CLASS ELECTS OFFICERS The 450 Seniors of Central yes- terday cast ballots for their offi- cers; when the political dust had settled, George Kenyon, Jr., was declared president. Sonny Ken- nedv, the mayor ' s son, was elected vice-president, Junior Percival, sec- retary; and Johnny Vogler, treas- urer. The newly elected administrators will take office immediately follow- ing the installation by the retiring president, Tom Payne, Jr. MISS GOODWIN TO PRESENT PLAY Miss Nancy Goodwin, instructor in Public Speaking and director of Dramatics at Central, yesterday announced her plans for the presen- tation of Turning The Screw, a light Shakespearian comedy in 103 acts. Casting for the play will begin next Monday; all screwballs inter- ested are asked to report to Miss Goodwin in room 802. SCOOP FRANKEL, NOTED LECTURER TO BE HERE TODAY Ernest Scoop Frankel, foreign correspondent and journalist, will lecture here today during the four guidance periods. Mr. Frankel attained his nickname as a result of his insurpassable ability to scoop all other papers in finding hot news. The subject of Scoop ' s address will be simply, How in the World Are We Gonna Get Rid of These Mugs, Hitler and Mussolini? When interviewed by our star reporter, Bill Burkhead, Jr., and asked to make a statement, Mr. Frankel gladly condescended and said, quote Nuts, unquote. NEW INVENTION GIVEN CENTRAL The recently patented Paper Picker Upper was presented to the school yesterday as a gift from its inventor, Prof. Thomas Morgan. The professor is now Dean of Research at Harvard. The invention is a mechanical device designed to pick up dough- nut wrappers, bottles, and empty cigarette packages with a no-stoop, no-squat, no-squint motion. This machine was designed to aid humanity, and I ' m proud to present it to my Alma Mater, said Prof. Morgan. CHEF SHORT RETALIATES Mr. Ralph Hemperly Short, chief cook in the Central cafeteria, today answered the complaint being made by the student body regarding the peculiar taste of the soup lately. Said Mr. Short: We cook our potatoes in butter, we broil our steaks, and we freeze our salads; but what we put in the soup is nobody ' s business but our own. FAMOUS BAND TO PLAY FOR PROMS Cotton Curry and his famous Boll Weavels will furnish the music for Central ' s 24th annual Junior-Senior Proms. Since leaving C. H. S. in ' 40, Cotton has risen to the very heights in the world of swing. His organization has toured the U. S., Europe, and all of Gastonia. Curry and his 15 Weavels will arrive Saturday by plane and will remain indefinitely. SPORTS BLUE STREAKS TAKE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP The mighty Blue Streaks of Central really caged up the strong invaders from Low Point last night and rolled to an easy victory to clinch the State Basketball Cham- pionship. Score, 56-8. Featuring in the win were E. P. Bethune, Jr., scoring 22 points, and D avie Coates, Jr., high scorer for the evening with 23 counters. Bethune probably would have been high scorer had he not called McGoot of the opposing team an Old Meanie. For this act of extreme discourtesy he was ex- tracted from the game early in the last period and proceeded to the locker room to pout. The line-up for Central was as follows: George Sherrill, Jr. Forward John Muse, Jr. Forward Junior Sideman Center D. Coates, Jr. Guard E. P. Bethune, Jr. Guard Pase 2 The RAMBLER March 1, 1960 NETTERS FACE U. N. C. Central ' s Tennis Team, coached by Bob Spurrier, a former stu- dent, will compete in the State Championship Tourney this week- end. The netters have a fine record behind them so far this year, listing State, Davidson, Duke, Yale, and Second Ward among their victims. 1961 Grid Outlook Good Many of our ' 60 boys will be back, and we have some fine mater- ial coming up, said Coach George Kenyon, Mentor of the Central Pussy Cats. So far as the editor can see, the trouble will be not in finding mater- ial but in finding opponents. The cats have won the State and South- ern Championships for 18 consecu- tive years. WE HONOR For fifty years, now this column has been paying tribute to some student in the school which is all very nice. But this week I wish to honor two people who do as mu h as anyone else for the betterment of the school, yet are never com- mended for it. They are our maids, Charlotte Martin and Helen Lisk. Have you ever stopped to won- der what becomes of all the mess we make every single day here a t Central ? Thousands of paper- scraps, chewing gum wrappers, and numerous other articles are strewn over the school from top to bottom by thoughtless students. And what becomes of them ? Helen and Char- lotte pick them up. It seems that these girls have always loved to read other people ' s notes; securing jobs as maids was the only way they could keep well up on things after their graduation in 1940. Nevertheless, with great pleasure and in all sincerity, we honor Char- lotte Martin and Helen Lisk. two of the underslung, I mean unsung heroines of Central. ALUMNI NEWS Scandal — Vernon Godfrey was yesterday convicted on a charge of bigamy in Judge D. D. Phillips ' superior court. Godfrey ' s wives were num- bered at 73, a record second only to that of King Solomon. Society — Anne Dichtenmueller Harkey en- tertained 3,000 Camp-Fire Girls with a lawn party at her lovely home on McDowell street yesterday. Catherine Cansler Kimbrell (wife of the famous Raymond Kimbrell, race driver) is enjoying an exten- sive tour through Europe. The annual meeting of the Eli- gible Old Maids Club was held last evening at the home of its presi- dent, Miss Betty Ah-Men Imen. The house was furnished through- out with hope-chests and love seats donated by the Asten Furniture Company. Here and There — Charlotte, N. C: W. G. Hawkins is the proud Papa of a % lb. baby boy. Washington, D. C: Tom Cook sold three of his jokes to the Smithsonian Museum. Charlotte, N. C: Betty Huneycutt Croner was today elected Miss-Stake of 1960. Anywhere: Marjorie Imbody Somebody wants to know what ' s become of that cute little Billy Tucker of the class of ' 40. Reno, Nev.: Mrs. Elizabeth Thrower Daven- port Henderson Short Frankel today filed suit for her fourth divorce. She charges Frankel with alienation of affections. The third party in the case she named as Idrienne Levy. Obituary — The body of Rosalie Winslow Zhycinsky, who died last month, was purchased by the U. N. C. Medical Dept. to be used in study- ing the. human brain. So far, they haven ' t found any material to work with. Ivan Parker, former student of Central and well-known creator of Parker ' s Little Liver Pills, died last Tuesday at his home in Belmont. It is said that Parker swore by his pills and took a bottle of them a day. Local doctors said that after Parker ' s death, they had to remove his liver and beat it to death. Chemistry Teacher Discovers Unknown Element Pop Rosenthal, head of Cen- tral ' s Chemistry Department for the past ten years, astounded the world of chemistry yesterday with the announcement that he had dis- covered element number 85, the substance that has been baffling scientists for hundreds of years. It seems that the Prof, happened upon the element quite by accident. I was yo-yoing in my lab when the string broke, said Pop. The spool sailed through the air and lit in my chemicals, breaking six flasks. I scooped up some of the mess, put it through my laboratory tests, and there it was. As a tribute to its discoverer, the new element will be called Rosen- talline. • AROUND CENTRAL • Who is that good-looking guy (whose initials are Ed Coleman, Jr.) that looks so wistfully at a certain blonde in Mrs. Dysart ' s (the former Eleanor Markham) College Algebra class? . . . CLASS POEM For misted hours we ' ve spent within these walls, Which lengthened into days of ordered calm; For laughter, caught, thrown back like silver balls; For beauty, captured with the sudden charm Of water, splashing in a fountain, clear, Or willow strands seen trailing on the ground; For Euclid, Caesar, Milton or Shakespeare, Who brought to us a knowledge more profound; For joy in glowing friendships we have made, For sorrow that we can no longer stay, For inner pictures that must never fade, But will be kept, bound up in blue and gray; We leaving, will remember you for these; To us they will be more than memories. I SNAPS AND ADS Art and Science Contribute to Community Welfare Human happiness requires cultural development as well as material things which make for greater ease and comfort. Opportunity to hear the musical creations of great masters adds to the appreciation of the finer qualities of life and the community as a whole reflects this in better living. As good music contributes to greater happiness, so too, electric service assists in making our homes and places where we work, more convenient, more comfortable and pleasant. Electricity has no equal as a servant in the home. It is instantly avail- able throughout the 24 hours of the day and works without complaint in perfoming various household tasks better and cheaper than they can be done in any other way. Electric cooking, water heating and refrigeration are conveniences which previous generations could not enjoy but which, because of their low cost today, are widely used. Clean, safe electric lighting, radio programs and many other conveniences from electric appliances are luxuries common in the most humble homes through the magic of electric service. Electric service means more than mere comfort and convenience. It means conservation of human energy, saving of time and labor, healthier families and better living for all.
