SYSTEM i' 4 il IT is diflicult to enumerate the many services rendered by Dr. Alexander Graham to the schools of North Caro- lina, but as the theme for this, the twenty-sixth volume of SNIPS AND CUTS, an attempt has been made to portray a few of the most important phases of his life. Having completed another year, one more edition of our High School Annual is liled away. We live in the present, look for the future, and rejoice over the memories of the past. So did Dr. Graham. As one purpose of his life was to make the schools of the state truly representa- tive, so it is the purpose of this book to be truly representa- tive of the school by which it is published. if 4 Q-,Tx ., D F M , 5 E M E f 'ed l ro- 'g of of :he ies 3 his 5 ta- ta- C O N T E N T S mwmwymmmmmmmmll BOOK I 'IH E SCIH O O L SENIOR JUNIOR BOOKI: A'TP1L E TI C S BOCJK III ORCLRNIZAIICHQS SPONSORS ADVERTISEMENTS fluff- Book ONE THE SCHOCL E: 1 , r M 5 : F il 4, N V 3. s- 23 F if ri 5 ls fl J fl: in. VVhile yet a mere youth, he followed the lost cause in the lVar Between the States, end- ing his career as a soldier at the Battle of Bentonville. After returning from the 1Var, he entered the University of North Carolina, where he graduated in 1869, and where he received his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1871. At the close of his School life, Alexander Graham, the young lawyer, returned to his home town. He practiced law there for seven years. Leaving law, Mr. Graham organized the public schools, starting in his own community. From the day he left law, the father of the North Carolina graded schools sacrificed the entirety of his life to the youth of this state. KM X 1 CLASS POEM If in the vagueness of tomorrow day life are accorded some measure of power, Or by Fate we are driven another way And bent with the burden of a sadder hour, Let us not forget these mellowed walls W'here once in equal toil the long days passed 'W'ith rushing forth and clamor in the halls, Indijferent clocks holding minutes til the last And jerking them from dragging time to free Our anxious waiting minds, while trivial care W'ould claim our timeg then through the windows we W'ould gaze in stealth at nature's wonders there. These dim, gold things rememlner, and infinite more, W'hile Time softly, imperceptiblg closes life's door. YVALTER CREASY OVERCARSH, JR., Class Poet. 57 sN1Ps and CUTS , CLASSDIARY GRAMMAR SCHOOL 1924+-1930 While we were yet small tots, the majority of us seemed to feel as though we had become ladies and gentlemen with the beginning of our school life. With the greatest diligence we lighted upon our tasks and vainly strove to master that thing called writing,'. In the following years, when new and more diflicult subjects were included in our schedules, we realized just how small and ignorant we really Were. By the time we reached the end of our sixth year in school, most of the feeling of superiority had disappeared and into its place a sense, or at least a suspicion, of insignihcance had crept. JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1931-1933 Our first day in Junior High School was one of confusion and uproar. Besides the great emphasis which seemed to be placed on our inferiority, there were other discouraging elements: We were dispersed among the throng of students and left to find our way along, the system of changing classes was new to us and hard to understand. Gradually, however, as the weeks rolled by, we became accustomed to the routine. We elected our class officers, who led us through the remaining months with success. Our second year introduced new clubs and other activities. We all climbed toward membership in the Honor Society, and some reached it. Many took part in athletics, which was steadily commanding attention. Again we chose our best executives and placed them in ofhce. With the success of our carnival and of our junior-senior party, we closed our eighth year in school. After many glorious occasions during the summer, we arrived back at school, ready to take on the duties of the dignified senior and to finish our work at Junior High. Among the outstanding events of this year were the election of student council officers, the winning of basketball championships by our athletic teams, the junior-senior party, and the carrying on of the school paper by members of our class. The close of this year marked another milestone passed and placed us in the last stage of our journey. SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1934-1935 Our three years in Junior High prepared us somewhat for our entrance to Central High. Nevertheless, our Hrst days here were similar to those first weeks at Junior Hlgh- New methods Of changing classes were placed before us, but we adjusted ourselves to the customs of the school and settled down to hard work in the last 58 yea' the can tool the wh: moi dis wh Mi ber W. the the br: bel 9 'S be thm fir: BL chi tal Ev WE th. pl: col fm A1 our ba ro: of .lgh yve the t thing lded in eling of fion, of Besides 'e other ind left hard to istomed maining climbed ok part nur best l of our school, 1 Junior student teams, nbcrs of thc last Central i Junior ulj usted thc IM SNIPS and CUTS years of our school life. The wings of time moved swiftly and soon we were in the midst of the election for student council officers. On the heels of this election came the carnival, which was supported by the entire school. Music and athletics took an important place in the schedule of our class. The music department entered the State Contest and brought back honors in both vocal and instrumental music, while the athletic teams came out on top as a last token of gratitude to Coach Skid- more, who accepted a position at the University of North Carolina. As our last year came, many mourned the fact that our twelfth grade had been dispensed with. We suffered the loss of Dr. E. H. Garinger, the former principal, who was on a leave of absence in New York. We greatly felt the resignations of Miss Marion Frazer, Miss Lemons, Miss Dickerson, Mrs. W. L. Walker, Miss Re- becca Henderson, Mr. C. S. Boger, Mr. Jasper Derrick, Mr. VV. P. Johnson, Mr. W. D. Skidmore, Mr. George Farrington, and Mr. Charles Whitsell, who, following the failure of the school tax vote, found more lucrative positions. We also suffered the loss of the manual training shop and the resignation of our very efficient li- brarian, Miss Rosannah Blair. One of our greatest losses was the death of our beloved Dr. Alexander Graham, who was quietly taken from this world November 2, 19341. He will always be in the hearts of his fellow citizens and will be remem- bered by both the old and young. In spite of these losses the class of '35 struggled ahead, determined to reach the goal which we had placed before us. Immediately we elected our class for the Hrst semester: President, Charles Akers, vice-president, Hugh Ashcraftg secretary, Martha Alexanderg and treasurer, Ernest Jackson. For the second semester we chose George Ray, president, Tom Myers, vice-president, Alice McCachren, secre- tary, and Paul Marion, treasurer, to guide us through our last stretch of school. One of the outstanding events of our last year was another school tax election. Everyone entered in this struggle with the determination to better our school and was successful. The supplement passed, much to the joy of everyone. Our athletic teams suffered the loss of coaches and did not finish the season with the success of past years. Our school paper, the Rambler, however, won second place in a group of eight hundred. As the months were torn from our calendar, we were suddenly thrust into the confusion of preparing for graduation. Our rings were ordered, we were measured for our caps and gowns, invitations were selectedg and class day officers were chosen. Amid this confusion another very successful carnival was held which lengthened our list of the enjoyable times we had spent at Central. Finally, we faced graduation! With much regret we accepted our diplomas which barred us from the happy school life of past years and which placed us on the rocky road to success in life. It is farewell to tl1e dear old school we love so well, but the sweet reminiscences of that chapter in our life will be cherished by the class of ,35. '!, 4 Xl SNIPS and CUTS SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY The great day has come! IVe, the Senior Class, are leaving the welcome walls of Central High School. VVe take it upon ourselves to go forth into the world with the sincere ambition to make good. Shall we? That is the question. You say, Nobody knows? I beg to disagree-the Shadow knows! With unscrupulous determination I have investigated the private lives of a number of Central High celebrities. Many secret ambitions will unhesitatingly be brought to light this very moment! In true Winchell style I will expose all! So it is with great pleasure and through the courtesy of Petunia Pixie's Pink Pills for Pale People that we take you thirty years into the future. IfVe find our- selves on the outskirts of the huge metropolis of Gastonia. We see a dingy three- story building to our left. VVe enter. As the door softly closes behind us we hear the triumphant cackle of one who has achieved success. He turns his face towards us-it is contorted with indescribable pride, our optics are feasting on the homely mug of Alvin Q. Wingfield. VVe are happy to learn that Alxhas at last overcome his inferiority complex and has taken up the honorable profession of carving wooden legs for one-legged ducks! But wait--will wonders never cease? Through the squeaky door stalks Al's special assistant, the ace chemistry instructor of the Caro- linas, .lawn Henry! Although thirty years have passed, our friend has not changed one atom-except for a serious case of harsh nerves he is the same old Simon Legree. Who dares enter the domicile of the phantom chemist? Mr. Norman rasps in his cracked little voice. Instinct, or perhaps an inner voice tells us that other places are healthier, so we hurriedly depart for the capital city of the United States, Washington, to meet the high society. As we drive up to the Green House CI forgot to mention that it has been repainted since 19355, we are startled to find that our hero, George Ray, has at last broken all records and is the President of the United States! George claims that after 1940 there was nothing left to be president of, so he hauled off and got elected to the supreme ofhce. Good old George! He sees that we are hungry, so after feeding us a generous helping of hamburgers and pickles he offers to show us around. We quickly don our red flannels and are whisked away to Miami to get a view of one of George's pet amuse- ment establishments- The Follies of 1965. We are nearly thrown into a pan- demonium when we discover that the star of the evening is none other than the belle of the thirties, Nell Puckett! Eagerly we push forward, the sound of an entrancing hula-hula dance assails our ears and we see little Nelly burning up the stage t0 the tune of My Old Flame. The orchestra plays an encore and the owner of the show, dressed in a full dress suit with tie and spats to match, steps to the stage amid the enthusiastic hand-clapping of the audience-itis Big Bill McCachren! Bill, in his smooth, soprano voice, announces the attraction of the night-starring .lay.Smith, the heartbreaker of the age, and the little chocolate drop, Barbara Davis, Singing 'iWhen You and I Were Young, Maggie. 'In the balcony, taking In the show with mouth agape, sits a gentleman who has profited by his experi6nCC as editor of the Rambler. Charlie Green, the problem child, is now the editor of thelrage of the century, Smokehouse. This only goes to prove that it doesn't take brains to be an editor-if Charlie Green is one. After two days in Miami the mayor, with the full support of the population, invites us to leave. We see among the many freaks many of our old cronies there- to enumerate them, there is Racehorse Tesh, a gentleman of the old school who still holds the worlds record for unaxoidable accidents then there is Bertram Skelding, the non-stop gossip who holds the record for talking the most without saying anything. We also find the patronizer of all the beauty salons, Ann Purnell and the sentimental son of the South, Burke Harlan, the man with the left-handed brain. Carousing about further, we come upon William Dye, who eats, drinks, and sleeps in Latin, he even speaks Latin. On our way home the next day we stop off in Morfranton to inspect Otten s So- ciety for the Prey ention of Cruelty to Animals. Among the animals we find Scottie Todd Casper Chandler and Bob Stuckey. Among the matrons we discoxer lane Holman-the Calamity Jane. She does the cook'n0'. Marilyn Brittain keeps the animals tamed with her usual soft talk and '1 wink or two. Returning to Charlotte, we are not surprised to learn that Central High School consists of four square blocks of shops and schoolrooms that are literally teemin, with action. We board the elex ator and stop at the seventh floor. Mr. Fields is thinking of enlarging his bookkeeping department from the seventh to the eighth Hoor-but that's another story. WVe Hnd the Rambler putting out a forty-page daily with Mr. Freeman and the janitors as paper boys. There are special smok- ing quarters with a casino on the fourth floor. We have championship teams, a good, well-equipped school, well-paid teachers, and a liberal education for all. What more could one ask? But this is in 1965-Can you remember the old days? My friends, when you want to Hy, you get an airplane, when you want to ride, you get an automobile, and when you wanted a prophet, you chose me-but I still insist that you can't take a mule and make a race-horse out of it! Only one game of the seasonls schedule was won, that being the opening game with Hickory. The score was six to nothing. The game with Salisbury was the only one ending in a scoreless tie. The new squad faced many difficulties from the start. Only one letterman returned to practice and the schedule was one of the toughest faced by a VVildcat team in many years. Two long trips were taken by the team. For the first time the Wfildcats jour- neyed to Atlanta, Georgia, where they were easily defeated by the Smithies. The second, going to Miami, Florida, where they again met defeat, this time at the hands of Miami High School. Instead of having one captain serve all season, Coach DeArmon appointed a boy to act as captain during each game. Boys who had the honor of this position were: Bill Spain, Bill McCachrcn, Harold Austin, Jack Fesperman, .lack VVatson, and Merritt Davis. He em- phatically defended the authenticity of the Mecklenburg Dec- laration of Independence. Many of Charlotte's citizens remembered well the visits he paid the schools, and the history stories he told the classes. VVhen Charlotte built its high school in 1920, the city rec- ognized Dr. Graham's work by naming the institution for him. The school still bears the name of Alexander Grahalll- Ever a true teacher, the father of the Charlotte School System, also taught a men's Bible class. He was a devout Christian and to his last days remained true to the church. As a student, he learned Spanish at the age of eighty. In these humble words, the life of Dr. Alexander Graham, father of Charlotte's School System, has been related. His life will long influence the thought and action of this state.
