Certainly we have made many mistakes, countless blunders that we can profit by their experi- ence: certainly the habits that we formed will mold the character of t'he man or the woman that we are to become. So, taking the years as they rolled by, let us see how we have pro- gressed both in mind and body. Who can forget that lirst day when we were rushed bodily down to the little grammar school accompanied by our parents to begin the long trek of our education? Little did we realize that the crude, funny marks that we were able to make on paper could be turned into beautiful etchings or complicated architectural designs, the letters that we learned to pronounce could be translated into Latin, Spanish, French, or harder still--correct English. Six years later grammar school had become but a memory and we were safely embarked in Junior High School. There our talents first became recognized and the principle of self- government instilled in our minds. There also we were given further opportunities to develop our bodies in school athletics and gymnastics. Father Time had torn three leaves from his year-book, and in September, 1931, we found ourselves hurrying into the halls of Central High School, our steps quickened by the sight' of paddles in the hands of pupils' we guessed to be Seniors. As the days passed by we saw more of the school--and the paddles, but soon we were engulfed in the mad scramble to classes and for the most part were forgotten. Our first recognition came when we elected the officers to lead our class: under their directing influence and the help of our advisors, we began working earnestly to show that the '31 Sophomore class was going to make history in the ensuing years. Amidst the hail of subscription go-getters of the Rambler and the Annual--through the tur- moil of the Student Council and annual campaigns, the class managed to hold out until the end of the year-a little discouraged but determined to make a better showing the next year. With memories of seashores, mountain resorts, and vacation camps still lingering in our minds, the now Junior class began to fulfill its destiny, Again we were favored with excellent' leaders and advisors and their tasks were to prove doubly hard because of the importance of our new position. From our ranks, prominent students were chosen to be JunioriMarshals, their standings based on citizenship and scholarship. Athletics also began to feel the influence of our class and the football, basketball, baseball, and track teams were well represented by our outstanding athletes. The third quarter exams breezed by and the time was now at hand to elect students for the major offices for the following year. Our classmates were nominated and the general hubbub of political campaigns was renewed. Then, just as we had reached clear sailing, came the bolt from the blue -the defeat of the school election. This meant, of course, most important to us, the elimination of the twelfth grade, and we were left to mourn our fates during our vacation. Through some stroke of fate, our class was not dispersed but returned to resume our last year's work nearly 300 strong, and we joined the ranks of t'he existing class to form the largest Senior class ever represented at Central. Certainly this was our happiest year and we looked forward to our coming commencement exercises. After purchasing invitations, calling cards, senior rings, annuals, caps and gowns, we had hardly anything left but' our pride, but this was greatly increased when on that never-to-be-forgotten night we received our sheep- skins and were told to get everything out of life that we could with them. It is said that history never repeats itself. As you read this you will probably be wish- ing that this statement was not true-that you could spend only a day as you were-happy. care-free, with the whole world before you. But unfortunately, the happiest years of our life have passed, and we must not linger here but must face the world with a greater determi- nation to live Life in such a manner as to always reflect credit on ourselves and our school, -RICHARD HELLER, Class Historian. Football Lack of funds at the beginning of the season threatened to annihilate all Central athletics, but a group of Charlotte citizens took up the task of sponsoring Charlotte High sports. Coach Walter Skidmore was retained as head coach. The football squad was late getting started and Coach Skidmore had only about fifteen players capable of first class high school football along with a large body of green substitutes. During the season when several of the stalwarts were injured, so inferior was the quality of substitutes, that many of the injured were forced to play. Thus they were called 'Llron Men. A scoreless tie with Columbia High was the first non-successful effort of the Skidmen. After the Columbia game, dazzling victories were chalked up against' such mighty elevens as Spartanburg, Atlanta Tech High, Blue Ridge Prep School, and Salisbury. The Tech game featured Home-coming Day with a record attendance. The Blue Ridge victory celebrated Skidmore's Day, planned as an appreciation to the best high school coach in the South. Meanwhile, many lesser victims had fallen in the wake of the Wildcat's claws, and with the clawing of Salisbury. the Wildcats made themselves western champions. However, a weary and broken team who had given its best many games before lost the state championship to Durham, but only after so dogged a show of determination that everyone who saw the game will remember a fighting bunch of Charlotte High school boys long after the score of the game has been forgotten. Basketball VVith the 193-1 Central High basketball team, the long list of teams successfully coached by VValter Dennis Skidmore was brought to a close, as Coach Skidmore had chosen to move on to a higher place which was deservedly his. However, Skid'l evidently believed in serving the choicest of desserts, and for his grand finale dished out a rip-snorting, straight-shooting, quick-triggered basketball team, which may be put down in the annals of Central sport as the most outstanding team ever to wear the Blue and Gray of Central. Opponent after opponent fell in the onslaught of this dashing quintet, and at the end of the season it had yet to meet defeat at the hands of a high school or colle ge freshman team. The football defeat suffered to Durham was fully avenged by the basketballers when they defeated the Bull City lads in the Final of the State Championship race and then went on to make the vengeance more compilete by annexing the South Atlantic title fthe First one ever gained by Centralj by lacing the same oppopents in the finals. Other prominent basket-throwers to fall victim to the VVi1dcat Claws were Richmond, Xvashington, Davidson Freshmen, Salisbury High, and Asheville High. Boxing With only four lettermen from Central's state championship boxing team, Coach Jim Belliveau attempted to build another championship team but fell a little short of it. He developed two state champions in Captain Max Holder and Bobby Ariail. Holder won the light heavy championship, while Ariail won the featherweight title, his second state title. The Vklildcat pugs won four meets, losing five and tying one. They finished third in the state meet which Raleigh won. The Central boxers defeated Durham, Wilson, Concord, and Belmont Abbey Junior College. They tied the Abbey in a return match. I la I SNIPS AND CUTS 1934 Special Acknowledgment The title pages for this issue of SNIPS AND CUTS were created by the advanced art students. They represent the various phases of school life. The little models were de- veloped With paper from original patterns together with paste, adhesive tape, thread, wool, rubber sponge, cello- phane, clay and rubber balls as supporting mediums. These figures possessed such details as eyelashes, separate curls, lace collars, high-heeled slippers. The compositions repre- sent the various talents of the students from figure to object construction, from composition to artistic pho- tography. To Miss Lemmons and members of her art class the staff acknowledges their appreciation for this new feature.
