671.91 James A Sloan represented the Board of Trade and accepted the school on behalf of the Clty of Columbla 'WHSOIIIC ceremonles were also held with the Past Grand Master John T Wllllamson presldmg At the opening of school September 21 1915 the former Senator Wllllam R Webb dellw ered an address to a large audience The openmg enrollment that vear was 291 students an lncrease of sxxty over the previous year It was mterestmg to note that the class graduating m 1910 con tanned a majority of boys In May 1916 the flag and Blble were presented to the school by Methodlst Church presented the Blble and Judge J T McKn1ght was the speaker who presented the flag Mavor Joseph M Dedman preslded at the exerclses Professor R L Harris the cxty supermtendent of schools accepted the flag and Blble A colorful parade ended the exercxses Dr Walter P Woldrxdge belng the chlef marshall of the parade On Sunday May Z2 1916 the first commencement sermon was preached ln the new hlgh school The Rev Samuel D Logan pastor of the Flrst Presbyterlan Church dellvered the address The graduatlng class conslsted of slxteen members From that txme up to the present the school has grown steadxly Condltlons have become crowded and again the enrollment has outgrown xts quarters for then slx grades were cared for ln thls bulldxng and now the Jumor high grades are ln a separate bulldmg The largest class to graduate was the 1931 class Nmety students recelved dxplomas Thls year elghty four students constltute the graduatmg class This high school has been on the accredxted 11st of the Southern Assoclatxon of Secondary Schools smce 1917 The faculty has mcreased from ten members ln 1915 to twenty ln 1939 The enrollment thls year has reached 605 There have been many mterestnng incldents nn the hlstory of the school that mlght have been complled for thxs paper but lt would be too long to relate them here PRESTON PAGE fPage Sixj -41: fr DOH- the Jr. 0.
