Without cere- mony or fanfare, ground was broken August 10, for the construction of the long needed, pleasantly anticipated tunnel. Winter weather slowed construc- tion, at least to the observers eye. Spring, summer, and fall in '53 will see the completion of the construction, and as anticipated, it will be ready for use for the next school year. Plan and Watch Central Build An unusual air of expectancy could be sensed in the-crowd at the basketball game in the Industrial building on Dec- ember 4, 195l. All of it wasn't caused by the game, most of it was in antic- ipating the results of the special school bond election for the combined auditorium -gymnasium held that day. The game was forgotten as the news spread through the crowd that the bond issue was ap- proved by a large majority of Red Wing residents. two This wasn't the beginning of the building program, since many years of planning and discussion concerning the desired procedure had gone on before. This election, however, definitely settled the high school building program with the approval of this S800,000 unit. Six months of study, planning, and drawing specifications by the Board of Education, school officials, and the archi- tects were necessary before contracts could be bid and issued.
