Plan and Watch Central Build An unusual air of expectancy could be sensed in the-crowd at the basketball game in the Industrial building on Dec- ember 4, 195l. All of it wasn't caused by the game, most of it was in antic- ipating the results of the special school bond election for the combined auditorium -gymnasium held that day. The game was forgotten as the news spread through the crowd that the bond issue was ap- proved by a large majority of Red Wing residents. two This wasn't the beginning of the building program, since many years of planning and discussion concerning the desired procedure had gone on before. This election, however, definitely settled the high school building program with the approval of this S800,000 unit. Six months of study, planning, and drawing specifications by the Board of Education, school officials, and the archi- tects were necessary before contracts could be bid and issued. no A A+ - 4 sf, ,W ., fr-5 if ' Q Finally, on July 10, 1952, con- tracts were awarded. Without cere- mony or fanfare, ground was broken August 10, for the construction of the long needed, pleasantly anticipated tunnel. Equipment then moved oyer to the east side of the Industrial building in late August and excavation was begun for the main unit. umttmu, W- - ,annum Ain. V . , ,. , .M M . .1 n nu., , tru ,.,. Winter weather slowed construc- tion, at least to the observers eye. Spring, summer, and fall in '53 will see the completion of the construction, and as anticipated, it will be ready for use for the next school year. Accounting for the many films and tapes used in all of the classrooms, maintaining health records kept by the school nurse, and assisting in the immunization programs along with vision and hearing surveys are two examples of this type of service. Another is greeting and escorting patrons at school events that requires the courtesy and poise shown by the members of the usher squad. Joining with others and establishing the fine safety record in our state, the traffic patrol serves in all weather to control pedestrian and vehicle traffic on our busy East Avenue. Inside the building, stairway re- gulations for between class traffic are supervised by another group who give hourly service. Providing attractive and efficient library service, and moving cumbersome audio- visual equipment from room to room, is also a real service. Accounting for attendance at assemblies, meeting the scowls and pleas of the noon hour front door crowd, and tak- ing telephone messages also demands the willing volunteer spirit of groups of Centralites. To achieve these ends the group and its committees had weekly dis- Treasurer LE ROY SC HARPEN 1 Secretary JOY SAUTER cussions and meetings on problems that ranged from candy sales to Homecoming parades. Following the council's work on all of the general arrangements for Homecoming, which again included the alumni reception, was the spon- sorship of the Free Farm Frolic. This annual hard time party, with its contests, prizes, and dancing, was enjoyed by most of the senior high. Throughout the year regulating hall and stair traffic, supervising detention, and after school typing room hours were the major service a- chievements of the group. The final achievement of the council is the organizing and staging senior award day in May. Council members served in community projects as well as school activities with library over-due notices and detention supervision. ff wb, to ' , 2 .mx , .1 1 LQ 1' J ' - ,, . ggi ,,,, Y X Officers: Forsberg, secretaryg Aadalen. treasurerg Zemke, presidentg Schendel, vice-president. ri Junior Student Council Council members about to consult in Principal An- derson's office. The Winger team of 1952. will go down in grid-iron history as one of the finest football squads to wear the Red Wing uni- form. Red Wing compiled a record of six wins, one loss and one tie, which gave them undisputed claim to the coveted Big Nine championship. This was the first confer- ence football title won by the school since 1941. Coaches Russel Fechter and Edward Murphy deserve praise for a job well done, while co-captains Bob Koplin and DaWayn Johnson both provided the needed leader- ship and skill for a championship team. Part Scenes Cer1tra1's eight best dressed til f '?'f ', E5 . if 7 QW M WY' K The Class of 1953 The activities and thoughts of the last year of any class at Central are aimed at that final meeting at Sheldon. Some with regret, some with sense of achieve ' ment, and all with plans to set the world on fire with the sparks that Central's memories are nourishing. Manis not made of meat alone but of mind also. A mind, however simple, that does not leave so easily an environment it so reluctantly entered. Like old men, the old minds of we seniors like to dwell now and then on the years gone by when we passed in and out of Central's classrooms with her many characters. In seventh grade we were scared of everything, everyone, every place, every minutegeighth, we had eventually adjusted to different classes each hour and students from the other three grade schools, ninth, all were numbed by the sudden homework, a shock from which we never recovered but eventually ignored- I tenth, tenacious in our efforts, we planted our seed in the senior high soil, working on projects the upper classmen headed, eleventh, we engineered the whole junior-senior prom from stars to speeches, and twelfth, we teamed up to save the school from des- truction by running it. Our class career was accompanied b athlet' y ic honors in football and basketball, an intellectual Ch. f . . . . ie tain, a less than eighty-voice choir, small honor rolls, the tunnel, larger-than-average Scarlet Feather sales, the spinet piano in choir, well- attend- ed formal dances, a victorious Homecoming, full length lockers, and no bonfire. We've been called the c1ass of contrasts . . . the very superior against the rather inferior . . . if any senior is inferior. Some received scholarships. others were weighed in the balance , some visited Chicago, others . . . detention, some left memories. other . . . bits of paper along the corridors. some lost sleep over their classes, others found it there, and some were called pets, other pests. We were either black or white with little grey matter. Well, underclassman, physically we've left you now. But, you'1l still find our marks in the office, our names on the seats at Sheldon, our faces in the Scarlet Feather, our trophies in the lighted cases, our revisions in the student council constitution, our rips in the ' ' prnnis at GAA, our scuffs along the study hall floor, and our fingerprints on the instruments in band and the piano keys in choir. These things, places, and achievements we all loved, used, and contributed to through self or spirit. They differentiate us from past classes, yet make us pleasantly similar. Guard and always r them, please . . . especially the laughter we left to echo in your hearts.
