They also put this principle into practice by assisting the Iunior Association of Commerce in the old clothes drive and entertaining the football squad at a banquet. Club activities around school included ushering at basket- ball games and selling and taking tickets at various gatherings. One very successful project, was their house to house campaign in selling tickets for the All Class Play. Since their four cardinal objectives are clean sport, clean living, clean speech, and clean scholarship these boys rank high among the others in school. JUNIOR HI-Y Dances, parties and business constitute a successful year of a club. Anyway that is what can be said of the Iunior Hi-Y. Meetings are held every two weeks with Mr. Harry Bockhaus as supervisor. The club planned occasions by which to increase the treasury fund. It sold candy and ice cream at the basketball games alternating with the Senior Hi-Y. After having a dance and two parties to raise money the Hi-Y donated three dollars to the Red Cross. To conclude the year, the club received pins signifying their enrollment in this club. SEND E3 IEIIIQY? RIJCK STUDY LATIN CLUB Keep 'em Digging, both for rocks and education is the code by which the Boys' and Girls' Rock Study Club carry on their club Work. Besides studying minerals and rocks the members visited the Rock Wool plant and took a field trip to the Sand Hill and also to Barn Bluff during the year. At one of their meetings, some of the girls gave interesting talks on birthstones. Accord- ing to their name, Rock Study Club, the boys have made col- lections of stones, in order to simplify the study of them. It is purely coincidental that their adviser is Mrs. Emily FeatherSTONE. With an enrollment cf 47 Discipuli, six boys and forty- one girls, the Latina Sodalitas Club began its third year of social and educational activity. The main purpose of the club is to increase the Latin students' understanding of Roman life and customs. ln order to be eligible one must have a scholastic grade of C in this subject. Different from other year's Work, the club devoted every other meeting on Wednesdays to Iunior Red Cross work. Lat- inas Sodalitas was the only high school club to purchase a membership in the Senior Red Cross. Two students, Georg- ene XVarren and Robert Jackson, who did unus- ual, outstanding work in the club for the past year were selected by Mrs. Emily Featherstone, sup- ervisor and director of the Boys' and Girls' Rock Study Club, to receive an award for this honor. The award was a card with an agate stone on it The agate stone seemed to be of much interest to the elubs as six mem- bers made eollec-tions of it, They were XYesley Plann, Karl Brunner, .lay Danielson, Randall Rent- ley, Stanley Peterson and Charlotte Dixon. Miss Fogelberg, Miss Curran and Mrs. Harold Croke have been teaching them the fundamentals of knitting. The aim of every member this year is to earn seventy- five points for a letter. This is a new project being carried on by the club and has been very successful in its first year. Points are gained by making articles for the Red Cross and by giving talks and demonstrations. Serving on committees or holding an office position also credits us with points. Another important feature of our club is our well known pop-corn sales. The pop- corn balls sold at the price of two for a nickel. Members were stationed at various places in the school building. These sales were held for the enjoyment of the student body, the faculty and also left a profit for our treasury. This money is used for parties and necessities of the club. The girls celebrated at a Christmas party. Games were played in Miss Curran's room and later lunch was served in the dining room. An annual pic- nic was held this spring. Although the seasons record does not lock im- pressive it was a fighting squad of boys. ln the first game cf the l94l season, the team fought its way to a tie with St. Paul Murray. Fine kick- ing and passing highlighted this game. The sec- ond game of the year found a tough Winona squad winning a garne interspersed with fum- ble and interceptions and incomplete passe-. Next the Birds traveled to Stillwater and spoiled the Ponies ho'neco'ni' g by defeating them. Or October 3 the Wings met Faribault on their home ground and suffered a defeat in a struggle that consisted of long drives by both teams with de- fenses holding in the end. Seeking revenge for their injured captain, the Austin warriors trounced the local eleven. On a soggy Rochester field, we struggled with a team which almost perfectly matched ours. Collecting nine first downs to Mankatc's two the locals played a bang-up hall game but came out of the short end of a close score. Th, last game of the season found an aroused Red 'Wing team going out to win and win they did by 'I touchdowns over Northfield despite a cold stiff wind. Vlosvliiuri Are you wondering why the girls in the picture above have such grins on theirs faces? lt's be- cause they won the GAA. basketball tournament run off this winter. The team, captained by Shirley Arntson, had a clean slate with no games lost. Of the thirteen on the squad the seven regulars of the lunior ll team were: Lorraine Pearson, Doris Warren, Shirley Arntson, Barbara Bennett, Dolores Poole, Marjorie Tebbe, and Betty Iohnson. Second in line were the Iunior l's with only one loss. Coming in third the seniors lost two games. Watch this one, Carroll Beeman's going to give you the 'ole dark one' this time, right 'down the groove' to Grantmanf' Beckler, Biornstad, Ryberg, and Nordly are looking on waiting their turn to slug one way out in the field. Softball is one of the most favored sports in GAA. Each spring when the softball announcement is made there is always a large turn-out. This year's group of freshmen promises to be a menace to their elders. Spread out a little bit! Watch that goal line! Even though this picture is posed, the above is typical conversation during a game. Of course this picture is just another picture and bears very little resemblance to one of the fast and furious soccer games in which each person has to watch out for herself. Due to the arrival of unexpected snow the soccer teams were unable to finish the tournament to decide upon the champs. There- fore, the tournament ended in a tie between the iuniors and the seniors who, incidentally, are old rivals in almost every sport. Ouch, my shin! is one of the favorite exclams ations of hockey players. But next year we hope no such thing will be heard, for then G.A,A. ex- pects to have shin guards for all players. lf you ask any GAA. members, they can tell you that hockey is no sissy's game. . ..f GROUND STICK, GROUND STICK- WE DO OUR KICKIN WITH OUR FEET! Mr. Iiirlstrom, lllqpge-W Johnson, Sm'hlic'htinf.:', Nyslrw ni, Working diligently day after day these up and coming young musicians will someday hold the first chairs in the A band. Every day during second period the B band practices and even though you may hear a blue note here and there you must remember these students have just started playing. After all, you don't see a first year trackman run the hundred yard dash in ten seconds or a freshman substitute making all the touchdowns. Music is just like any other activity where practice makes perfect and to show how much progress had been made the B band pre- sented a concert in the spring. re are 45 members in the organization but it si s that the members lean toward the brass S With bugles blaring and drums abeatin' the snappy f Drum Corps comes into view. Students living within a radius of two blocks of school don't have to explain to their parents the hours of practice the girls put in, for in the spring and fall between the hours of one and two p. m. they probably have peeked out the windows to see them marching by. t o instruments for there is plenty of good talent in the brass sections. Most of the members played in the grade school bands before coming to high school and the B band. ln addition to directing the B band, Mr. Lidstrom has charge of the A Band, Drum Corps, Beginners Band and Grade School Bands. Whewl Perfect instrumentation is not attempted in B band for finding the instrument best suited for the student is much more important. We get out of school today. Aren't we lucky? Yeah, l'll say. How come? Oh We're playing for the grade school field day. This and march- ing in the Memorial Day Parade highlight their year's activities. Good work B Band! TBAMP! TBAMP! TRAMP! It's the high school band. Those some sixty odd people that do belong fully realize how lucky they are to be members of such a fine organization. Of course getting up at 7 o'clock in the morning to practice marching and going to rehearsals after supper hours isn't the pleasantest thing to do, but the musicians do it cheerfully. The Band had a full season this year. Besides playing one combined concert with the choir, and special concerts in the park and Training School it also sponsored the concert given by the Luther College Band in April. The music festival in May STRUTTIN' ON DOWN 5645q,,f,L,oLfz5'4, f and the contest in April all prove that their ha' rdffg work was rewarded. But Ah! That's another story. We present a skit entitled The Band Gets the Mumps or The Contest . . . It's Out! Scene . . . band room. Time , . . Tuesday, April 7 fthe first school day after Easter vacation.l Oh-Oh! Have- n't you heard? We're not going to the contest. Why? Because ten band members have got the mumps. Oh well, we've got the festival to look forward to. That typifies the band spirit, for after working since Christmas on music for the contest and then to have the big event cancelled five days before the trip was enough to make anybody downright mad Cbut not the bandl. .I- IICVT 'VH I'IlfiIl'i': ilwtnu, Hpsnhl, Hvnlsun, Hwkzxnsun, fl:-1111+-r, wits-1', llc-Hillel, Knlln-l'1.:'. Those in the picture are: Vernon Winblad, Perry Martin, lack Fried- rich, Paul Kuhn, lohn Street, Marvin Peterson, lohn McGrew and Milton Wimmer. They deserve their share of honor for their work too. At every game, iootball or basketball, at plays and assem- blies they take our tickets. Our ticket squad consists of Gene Van Deusen, Ralph Strom, Ross Held and Lowell Anderson. Garnet Weberg, Betty Hall and Carol Avery seem to be busy finger painting, which was very popular in Art ll and Ill this year. Here is one part of the always enthusiastic Red Wing rooting section at one of our basketball games. They always cheer the team whether we lose or win. Sportsmanship is an outstanding characteristic of the Red Wing fans. Mary Lou Morley, Marie Warn and Miohne Carlson are busily packing dolls to be sent to the Welles Club to make children happy. These dolls were sent to the high school by the Share-Your-Clothes Drive committee and the eighth grade girls dressed them. Genius at work? Maybe not, but lean Budenski, our head typist, is definitely interested in what is going into the next issue of the CHIEFTAIN. lean can usually be found during the fifth period working on the CHlEFTAlN. -F. Spealeing of Pivfures . . . HERE IS AN INSIGHT INTO THE STUDEN TS' LIFE AT RED WING HIGH Busily primpxnq for classes are: lyone Opsahl, Patsy Kolberq, Emoaene Cater and Elaine Ovalson. The cloak hall seems to be the favorite place for the qirls to meet and make- up. This continues throuqh the whole school year. Standing up in study hall is almost an everyday occur- rence for a few students. That is what happened when two sophomores, Gene Cook and Dorothy Smith were cauqht in the middle of a conversation, Busily sellina Defense Stamps to Elaine Ovalson, Bill Holmquist and Tom losephson, are Paul Kuhn and Betty Peterson. Defense Stamps are sold every Tuesday and Thursday during the session room period. The motto of these students seems to be Buy Defense Stamps and Lick the Other Side. Vfhere to? Lyman Nash seems puzzled as to his destin' ation in writing out a pass qiven him by Shirley Sorenson. Lyman always has plenty of spare time durinq school hours.
