FRED HOVDE ln Appreciation Dr Frederick L Hovde president of Purdue Universitv Lafavette Indiana was the speaker at 1948 commencement exercises in Devils Lake high school Hovde is a graduate of Devils Lake high school and the Universltv of Minnesota and was chair man of the guided missiles committee of the lomt arms naw research and deselopment board He was recently featured m an article rn the magazine Pic as Young man of the month The magazine article was mamlw devoted to the important part Hovde plawed in the dewelop ment of rocket and atomic ordnance during the sears of the war In 1941 Horde was on the American mission to I:.ngland and much of the top secret data on the atomic bomb radar rocket and other weapons passed through his hands In fact he xx as one of onlx four -'kmericans to handle this information standing record as a scholar and athlete He was chosen western all conference quarterback and was named Rhodes scholar from North Dakota in 1979 He attended Oxford umxersrtw in Fng land under the scholarship and returned to the Ulm ersits of Nlmnesota m 193' as a member ot the chemistry department He also was lecturer m chemistrx and director of the scholarship foun dation in the University of Rochester N X We are all very proud of Fred Ilox de especialls the students of Dewils Lake high school lfred Hovde has established a goal for mmy of the students of Dexils Lake to tn to reach lage J O O . . Members are taught how to take stamps oil the letters and are shown how to put thern in their stamp albums. Each stamp has an interesting historical background and Miss Nelson savs it helps the students knowledge of geography and historv when they learn about other countries through stamps. C B U emu: Devils Lake Boy Concert Band In its twenty mnth consecutive ind successful year under the direction of Larl B VVenner one of the most capible band directors in 'North D iltota the Devils Lake Boy Concert Bmd lgdlll displlycd the lngh Clllll1tX md unique style of playing that has been the pattern in the preceding twenty-eight years and which has made this organization and also the tovvn itself well-known. 'l'he band has served as the governor's official band of the state of North Dakota under many governors, holding this commission under former governors Nestos, Sorlie, Shafer, VVelford, Moses, and also under the present governor, Fred Aandahl. Ample opportunity to demonstrate their musical ability was provided in their sixty-two pu lic appearances, in which they appeared before approximately three hundred thousand people.
