fawffw COACH HOWARD f Have you attended a football practice of the Golden Bears at Bosse Field? If so, you have observed the activities of Head Coach Daniel O. 1 Howard. You have seen him speaking to the varsity squad, demonstrat- ing a play or criticizing the performance of a group. You had no difficulty in identifying Coach, In addition to being the man who obviously was in command, he probably wore gray baseball pants, a white T shirt and a green trench coat if the day was rainy or cold. He wore a baseball cap and in his left hip pocket was a black loose-leaf notebook. In a way, this little book contains the history of Central High School football during the past twenty-five years. During the practice session strange men were observed either down on the field or sitting in the stand. Perhaps one or two wore the uniform of one of the armed services. Others were older and some had greying temples indicating middle age. Most, perhaps all, of these men are entitled to wear the varsity MC. They had stopped by to express good wishes to the team and coaches. Perhaps, also, they listened hopefully for an encouraging word about the season's prospects. Dan had time for a friendly greeting with each one and perhaps an inquiry about the family. Mr. Howard has proved himself to be an able coach. More than that. he has been an inspiration to the students at Central for more than twenty-five years. It is for these reasons that we, the members of the Class of '59, inscribe this edition of the Centralian to him with affection and best wishes.
