This year the Red and Black is dedicated to Jan Funderburk whose dedication to the students of Central High School has shone through his history lessons for the past four years. Coach Funderburk has displayed his concern for us, though, more actively when he undertook the more difficult task of trainer for the football team three years ago. From that day on, he became affectionately known as DOC Funderburk whose compassion and love for the students was rewarded only by those who occasionally thought to say THANKS. DOC, an avid hamburger addict, can frequently be seen at the Varsity where he claims he gets the best hamburger steaks - who can teach and afford steaks? Although hamburger is his favorite main course, there is no doubt in anyone's mind what his favorite dessert is. Anyone who has twenty Moon Pies on his lunch tray must love them! Both DOC and his wife, Shelrea, received their B.S. and M.Ed. degrees at Auburn University. Obviously the favorite colors of these War Eagles are orange and blue. It is hoped that little Andy, born the night of November 14, 1974, will someday wear the uniform of an Auburn Tiger on the playing field. The Seniors of l975 are grateful to you, Doc, for your devotion. You are the first teacher in many years to whom we have dedicated both Homecoming and the Red and Black. We are more than grateful for all the wounds you have bound and minds you have broadened, we love you. The victories, defeats, heartaches, headaches, joys, sorrow, tears, laughter, and fun we shared will always be remembered. In those years we learned to respect and love each other, to work together, and appreciate each other. We matured as individuals as well as a class. We had School Spirit and proved it especially in the competition this year and years past. We can proudly say that our class motto is true, and always will be. Each year we have been led by some great leaders and sponsors. This year is no exception. We want to thank Mrs. York, Mr. Love, and Mr. Farrar for supporting us this year. From good things on to better things, that is true of the l 975 Senior Class. Sponsor: Mrs. York, Pres. We had our problems finding our classes and being late. Our class officers Tommy Meeks, President, Fritz Florence, Vice President, Dasiy Lowman, Secretary, and Chandra Stephens, Treasurer helped make it a year to remember. The most exciting time at C.H.S. is football season, mainly because of Home- coming. The competition was tough and we were brought close together as a class, but not quite close enough. We thank our class sponsors, Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. Tew, and Mr. Ezekiel for their help during this time. Q Powder Puff brought us our third victory. Thanks to Doc Funderburk our gals came through with flying colors. We defeated the Senior girls 6-0. Homecoming, Powder Puff, Class Rings, and the Junior-Senior Reception made it a great year. Sponsors: Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. Te W Class Officers: Daisy Lowman, Secretary, Tommy Meeks, President, Chandra Stephens, Treasurer. Achieving a great deal since being Freshmen, when we finished last everything. This was a winning year with us taking the Spirit award and second in float competition during homecoming activities. Our footbe record improved from l-7-O to 7-1-1 this year. One thing we can say about our class that stands out is, if we don't succeed at first, we try agai That we did, and look what rewarding results we received as Sophomores. We would like to thank Mr. Adams, Mrs. Hope, Miss Kovacich, and Mi Ward for helping us this year. The sophomores were victorious in the powder puff game winning 6-O over the Freshmen. 1 V jf f f fl f f V' A f f - 2 f f fx if w e , , iw, , H ,,, 1 W A 92 Q -f A fliers sa 5 idams, rdams, .dams .dams llexander, Joseph , llexander, Theodore lllen, Brenda 4 ,,.,W 1. . 4 Y i if A, Allen, Sandra Allen, Terry Andrews, Scott Anthony, Angela Archey, William Arrington, Steve Aster, Teresa Brent Debra Bobby Patricia Edwin Eldon Gwen 'V ' ,, 1555 , if rg v P 1 ,Ti I A T ll Benge, Doug Benton, Tommy . 1 viii ef' su, Ss J if W 1 9 B fx B' 1. iw. bs. They were 500 strong, and they all acted as if they were ready for work. ln this class we were represented in all organizations on the campus. ARCHING BA The Central High Band is actually a family of enthusiastic musical organization including the marching band, concert band, pep band, lab band and small special groups. The marching band holds forth during football season and performs at pep rallies, football games, marching festivals and parades. The concert band is involved in state and district contests, and concerts. At various bas- ketball games and pep rallies you will notice a highly spirited group called the pep band. This is a volunteer group which plays for sporting events and gatherings. The lab bancl is both a credit course lopen to Juniors and Seniorsl and a performing group - a dance band with a standard big band instrumentation of five saxes, four trumpets, four trombones and a rhythm section of drums, bass, piano, and guitar. Band season is actually a ten month stretch of rehearsals and activities which affords little time for relaxation. Some of the years events include: Band Camp, pep rallies, football games, homecom- ing parade, Christmas parade, Stagg Bowl, Southeastern State marching band festival, District and State Band Contest, district all- state tryouts, Alabama All-State Band, solo and ensemble contest, numerous ROTC performances, various clinics, Christmas Concert, g V U i.. Plagued with injuries and an epidemic of quitters, they managed to pull through a 5-5 season. The games won were most exciting as were some of the ones lost. The 8-O victory over Lanier was one of the high points of the season. The defeats of lb-13 to Opelika, with only two seconds remaining on the clock, the 3-O to Columbus and the 9-7 to Jeff Davis were all heartbreak- ers. .. Doug Brown wi CENTRAL vs COLUMBUS Bi-City football fans packed Phenix Municipal Stadium expecting to see one of the most explosive games in the two schools long history. But their hopes were soon destroyed, as they were forced to sit back and watch as the two teams played great defense and traded punts. There was only one maior offensive drive by the Blue Devils in the second stanza. The Red lmps halted it before they could score a touchdown, but a field goal try was in order. The Columbus Blue Devils made good on the 24 yd. attempt giving them their entire point total as the Red Devils dropped a heartbreaker 3-O. 6 , haf. ws I -.:- 5 ,,.. .... Central overwhelmed Baker 41-O for their first victory of the year. Central scored all forty-one points in the first half. The Red Devils had the winning edge from begin- ning to end, using an awesome rushing attack and superb defensive effort to blank the Lions. Dabne Adams was the leading Central rusher with seven carries for seventy-four yards. . sf NS' f me W A lilliii Qs. NM - a - g R K ' -f Q , E - My-,E Berry Davis KA., NW ,.m, - D Joey Diaz v.. It was great defensive plays which halted Kendrickf key interceptions by Joey Diaz and Fritz Florence highlighted the first half. The Auburn Baby Tigers needed a win to boost morale and it appeared that Auburn was well on its way to taking the contest. But the Red Devils' defense came through and ended the Tigers' hopes. Central showed very few bright spots in its loss to Dothan, even our vaunted defense lacked the spark which usually made them great. Dothan's offense yawned its way to 21 points, while the Red Devils could not even yawn. The lone Central standout for the game, David Leroy Jones, showed signs of excel- lence by gaining 65 yards in l7 attempts, and tallying Central's entire point output with a touchdown run. Final count: Dothan 21 Central 6. 40 David Jones Bradley Luke Randy Luker CENTRAL vs JEFF DAVIS The Vols strode into Phenix Municipal Stadium as arrogant as ever, but the scrappy Devils gave them all they could handle before bowing 9 to 7. Jeff Davis drew first blood with a touch- down but failed on their punt. It was still 6- 0 as the 3rd period got underway, but Jeff Davis added a field goal pushing their lead to 9-O. Central stormed back with a Moses Upshaw touchdown, but it was too late as we lost 9-7. Central standouts for the game included Lockey Mitchell who rushed for 52 yards, Steve Huckaby who played inspired defense and scored a touchdown that was disallowed, and Mike Mercer who picked up 50 yards. dd! We continually blew chances to gain momentum and control of the game by making errors at a critical point in the con- test. The offense was sluggish throughout the encounter and could obtain only 89 yards total offense. The defense played well but allowed l5 points while Enterprise shut us out. lt was a heartbreaking loss for Central, the third in a row, and put a dark shadow on our hopes for a championship season. The only inspiring note was the performance of super sophomore Billy Jackson, who per- sonally acquired 59 of our 89 offensive yards with his running ability. Rupert Moore .4-l James Parker Henry Perry CENTRAL vs LANIER Central returned to the winning tracks, after three losses in a row, with an exciting 8-O victory over the Lanier Poets. Lanier defense seemed to be a stronger one than we saw in our 20-10 win over the poets of last year. It was probably due to the regioning of Montgomery Schools. The Red Devils' only score came when fullback Lokey Mitchell fumbled into the end zone where center Mark Clements recovered the ball for the Central victory. Billy Jackson led Red Devil rushes with 105 yards. ,4-55- David Phelps E Bill Siniard Bernard Spencer George Thomas OPELIKA vs CENTRAL Both Central and Opelika held 4-4 records going into the showdown. A local newspaper predicted the final score to be I7-14 in favor of Opelika, they missed by one point each way. Central took an early 6-O lead on a 32 yard pass from Dabne Adams to Irvin Miller and later tied the game 13-13 on a nine yard run by Billy Jackson. ln the misty rain Opelika missed two short field goals, before OHS kicker booted a 44 yarder with two seconds remaining to give OHS a I6-13 victory over Central. 244 is S it CENTRAL vs JORDAN Central needed a victory over the Jor- dan Red Jackets not only to continue our string of Homecoming wins, but to keep from having a losing season. A long week of festivities boosted the spirits of the Red Devils and their fans. lt was a pair of 44 yard runs by Billy Jackson that gave Cen- tral a T4-O lead and kept the crowd on its feet. The Central defense, again, shined as it held Jordan to only six points. The Red Devil offense gained 381 yards in the Al' 6 rout of the Red Jackets. We were aware of all the challenges and were prepared to meet them Many long tedious hours were spent in the preparation of the 1975 Red and Black and many people in addition to the annual staff were involved with its development Mr. Kirkland allowed some of us to leave our studies when we were rushing to meet deadlines and Mrs. Harden typed many last minute layouts as we busily arranged the pictures of those special moments. Mr. Roger Harrison of Dunaway Studios and the staff photographer captured on film the essence of the many times we'll long remember Mrs. Blades and Mrs. Nevels donated to us the use of their typewriter and telephone. Holland Mansion, Hungry Hunter Tom Houstin's and the Columbus Travel Bureau Staff deserved special thanks for their patience with us while we used their premises for pictures. A very big appreciation goes to Mrs. Diane Shafer whose mind has aided us with the writing of this annual Mrs. Fran Ellis and Mrs. Vera Hope, our sponsors were really more than iust sponsors. They aided us constantly cheered us when we were down and stayed with us when we needed them. Fran Ellis was more than a sponsor to us . . . she was a friend a second mother It is always hard to say our final good-by to our friends at Central, students and faculty, and we, the Editors of this Red and Black yearbook hope that this annual will in some way, somehow let you always Cgfiw yi Qxd 'NxJ to Lokib Yes, rem em ber, . the way we were. t 'JDQUEE I remember. . . y I , Gillis' ffM52AfQ5?5 fwW ff?
