SENIORS, 1941-45 The year 1944-45 has been a great one for Central High School. It is the crowning year of a Senior Class that has come through one of the most eventful periods in history. The Class of '45 is Central's first full war-time class. Despite the difficulties of war times, we have had a fine four years in Central. lt was on a blue Monday morning December 8, l94l , when we were freshmen in Central, that we heard the eventful news that would turn our hearts and resources to total war. We saw our brothers, fathers, sweethearts, and sisters leave to fight for the cause that we be- lieve to be right. Every month members of our families left for training camps. Maybe the classes of years to come won't have to say: Do you think I will be deferred until I get my diploma? Have you seen Harry in his uniform? He looks wonderfull ls Johnny getting to come home on furlough? l'm just dying to hear from George, who is overseas. Do you think your tires can go to Mongomery? l've got to be at that game. l surely would like to have a piece of Beech-Nut. l never get to make any more fudge, because of the sugar shortage. We were going to have a T-bone, but our points gave out. With all this we have tried to have normal l'igh school lives. We hope this, the Fifteenth Volume of the RED AND BLACK, will serve as a sort of scrapbook of the most pleasant days of our lives, the high school days. lt is our sincere hope and prayer that peace will soon come. We hope this book brings fond memories of the high school romances, dates, dances, foot- ball and basketball games, the bull sessions, and last, but not least, the cramming for exams. lt has all been swell! This book may remind us of very happy or very sad occasions-but such is life. It may re- mind us of Lupey's being chosen to head the Seniors of '45, of the Carnival which made more money than any other ever has made at Central, with beautiful Mary Cecile being elected Queen, of the first unbeaten and untied football team Central has ever produced, Grits and Slug guiding the team, Gunboat being selected All-Southern and All-State for two years in a row besides being elected Most Valuable and called by many the best athlete that has ever played for Central, of Guts' blocking that extra point in the Jordan game before 9,000 drenched spectators, of the fash- ion show when the lettermen were awarded their sweaters, of the Cheerleaders leading those ter- rific cheers and going through their antics, of that famous Band performing at half-time and during the game, of the fast-stepping Majorettes strutting their hearts out for Central, of that beautiful Operetta, Rio Rico , of Joyce's and Oley's being elected Most Representative, of the heartbreaking game in the finals of the District Basketball Tournament, of Oley's and Lupey's be- ing elected to lead the team, of the roaring audience at two performances of the Five Star Min- strel , ofthe dedication of the Seniors' two projects, a Steinway grand piano for the auditorium and indirect lighting for all classrooms, of the assembly audience swooning when either Denny or Oley sang, of the Brotherhood Speakers, of the school's receiving the Minute Man flag, of Miss Walker's breaking a good many male admirer's heart by marrying her lieutenant, of the grand o pening of the Centralian Club, of the Dramatic Club's entertaining night of plays, of Variety Night, of that simply wonderful Junior-Senior Reception, and of that long, sad march up the'aisle for the Seniors to get their diplomas. All this has been wonderfull The only trouble is that it all ends too quickly. We'll never forget these days, and we'll hold our Alma Mater in our hearts always. We hope we, the Seniors of '45, have helped Central and will become an integral part of her rich history. The Class of '45 says one departing word: Goodbye Central, we love you, and God bless you.
