It is the crowning year of a Senior Class that has come through one of the most eventful periods in history. The Class of '45 is Central's first full war-time class. Despite the difficulties of war times, we have had a fine four years in Central. lt was on a blue Monday morning December 8, l94l , when we were freshmen in Central, that we heard the eventful news that would turn our hearts and resources to total war. We saw our brothers, fathers, sweethearts, and sisters leave to fight for the cause that we be- lieve to be right. Every month members of our families left for training camps. Maybe the classes of years to come won't have to say: Do you think I will be deferred until I get my diploma? Have you seen Harry in his uniform? He looks wonderfull ls Johnny getting to come home on furlough? l'm just dying to hear from George, who is overseas. Do you think your tires can go to Mongomery? l've got to be at that game. l surely would like to have a piece of Beech-Nut. l never get to make any more fudge, because of the sugar shortage. We were going to have a T-bone, but our points gave out. With all this we have tried to have normal l'igh school lives. We hope this, the Fifteenth Volume of the RED AND BLACK, will serve as a sort of scrapbook of the most pleasant days of our lives, the high school days. lt is our sincere hope and prayer that peace will soon come. We hope this book brings fond memories of the high school romances, dates, dances, foot- ball and basketball games, the bull sessions, and last, but not least, the cramming for exams. lt has all been swell! This book may remind us of very happy or very sad occasions-but such is life. It may re- mind us of Lupey's being chosen to head the Seniors of '45, of the Carnival which made more money than any other ever has made at Central, with beautiful Mary Cecile being elected Queen, of the first unbeaten and untied football team Central has ever produced, Grits and Slug guiding the team, Gunboat being selected All-Southern and All-State for two years in a row besides being elected Most Valuable and called by many the best athlete that has ever played for Central, of Guts' blocking that extra point in the Jordan game before 9,000 drenched spectators, of the fash- ion show when the lettermen were awarded their sweaters, of the Cheerleaders leading those ter- rific cheers and going through their antics, of that famous Band performing at half-time and during the game, of the fast-stepping Majorettes strutting their hearts out for Central, of that beautiful Operetta, Rio Rico , of Joyce's and Oley's being elected Most Representative, of the heartbreaking game in the finals of the District Basketball Tournament, of Oley's and Lupey's be- ing elected to lead the team, of the roaring audience at two performances of the Five Star Min- strel , ofthe dedication of the Seniors' two projects, a Steinway grand piano for the auditorium and indirect lighting for all classrooms, of the assembly audience swooning when either Denny or Oley sang, of the Brotherhood Speakers, of the school's receiving the Minute Man flag, of Miss Walker's breaking a good many male admirer's heart by marrying her lieutenant, of the grand o pening of the Centralian Club, of the Dramatic Club's entertaining night of plays, of Variety Night, of that simply wonderful Junior-Senior Reception, and of that long, sad march up the'aisle for the Seniors to get their diplomas. All this has been wonderfull The only trouble is that it all ends too quickly. We'll never forget these days, and we'll hold our Alma Mater in our hearts always. We hope we, the Seniors of '45, have helped Central and will become an integral part of her rich history. The Class of '45 says one departing word: Goodbye Central, we love you, and God bless you. CONTENTS INTRODUCTION DEDICATION ADMINISTRATION SENIOR HIGH JUNIOR H IGH SPORTS ORGANIZATIONS FEATURES ALMA MATER Fair Central, Alma Mater, Dear, Our hopes, our fears are thine, Round all thy children far and near thy arms entwine. We cherish thee in faith and hope, To thee our Iaurels bring, In tribute of our loyal love, this song of ours we sing. Led by the glorious Red and Black, we'II all our vict'ries share. Spurred on by honor's radiant star, we do and dare. ln purest, sweetest harmony, our voices now we raise and join with swelling melody, to sing our High School's praise .... DEDICATION In recognition ot his tireless work in bringing glory to Central, we, the Seniors ot l945, take great pleasure in dedicating this, the Fifteenth Volume ot the RED AND BLACK, to a wonderful coach, a fine Christian gentleman, and one to whom we would give and did give our all, JESSE THOMAS GARRETT w B Superintendent Lucien P. Stough, superintendent ot Phenix City Public Schools, received his A. B. degree from Highland Home College and his B. S. degree from the University of Alabama. The school system of Phenix City has progressed under his ability as an organizer since 'l923. We cannot praise too highly our ca- pable superintendent. I' Principal William Osler Langley, our princi- pal, received his B. S. degree from St. Lawrence University and his M. S. degree from Alabama Polytechnic ln- stitute. He assumed the duties as principal of Central High in 1934 and has loyally led the students on to many honors. We, the students of Central High, owe much to him for his untiring et- torts and splendid leadership. LTY M. Mrs. Nelle S. Coulter l1'i:gl,'iL', .'l1ilfffrfm1!fl.t B. S. University of Alabama S. CHARLES RAY HAROLD CARTER R FRANK ROBBINS BILLY GENTRY PAUL MORAN MILTON STEWART PETE HARRIS TEX MITCHELL PALMER WEAVER BILLY WEAVER A. J. KONDROIK EARNEST FULLER HARRIS HENDERSON ERIC DUDLEY SUMMARY OF FOOTBALL On Saturday night, September 23, in Memorial Stadium with 6,000 fans looking on, an untried football team from Central High took the field against the Blue Jackets of Baker Village High. The mighty Red Devils, scoring at will, roared to a convincing 7l-0 victory. Immediately Central's stock soared, and great things were expected from the Big Red of '44. Coach Tommy Garrett was very pleased. After two weeks rest, the Red Devils were put to the test by the Valley High Jeeps, but again the Big Red com- pletely smashed the opponent's offense and defense, defeating Valley 38-O in our first home game before a capacity crowd in Martin Stadium. On October l2 in Memorial Stadium, the Big Red completely smothered their arch rivals, the Columbus High Blue Devils, before an amazed crowd of 6,000 spectators. Of.the nine passes thrown by Leroy Propst, eight were completed, which accounted for three touchdowns. Gene Tillery was on the receiving end of most of these heayes, and did some spectacular catching. After the slaughter was over, Central had won a great 33-7 victory. By this time, the Red Devil spirit had gripped the school and city, and visions of an unblemished record were dreamed of. This was sweet revenge, for the only blemish on our record last year was a defeat at the hands of the Blue Devils. The next week Central returned to Martin Stadium to defeat the strong Starke University School of Montgomery 3l-7 before another overflowing crowd. Propst was a marked man, but Pete Harris ran wild to score 3 touchdowns. On October 27, the Big Red travelled to Lanett for their first game on completely foreign soil. Here, by defeating Lanett High 34-7, the Devils proved to everyone that they were tops anywhere. The next week the undefeated and untied Red Devils journeyed to the Capitol City of Montgomery to battle the Sydney Lanier Poets. With the largest crowd of the prep season in Cramton Bowl, Central licked Lanier 2l-7. lt was an all Propst show. On the first play from scrimmage, Gunboat electrified the crowd with a dazzling 60 yard run to put the Big Red ahead. After this the game settled down into a tough battle. But Propst and Company punched over two more touchdowns to put game number six in the ole Red sock. On November 9, the game of games between the Red Devils, with a perfect record, and the once beaten and once tied Red Jackets of Jordan High was played in Memorial Stadium. The Big Four title hung in the balance. A crowd of 9,000 drenched spectators sat through a freezing downpour to witness one of the best games ever played in that stadium. The Big Red drew first blood, but Propst failed to convert. Jordan came back and tied the score, but their conversion, too, was wide. This was the game we had been waiting for. The score stood 6-6 at the half. The Devils came back after half-time to punch over a score. This time Propst split the uprights for the thirteenth point. Then the dogfight really began. ln the closing minutes Jordan got a break and scored. Joe Harrell, their half- back, had a chance to tie the game. With every spectator on his feet watching, Milton Stewart broke through to block the extra point try. That was the ball game. Though the Devils were driving down the field, the game ended before they could score. We had won, and there really was a hot time in the old town that night. A The next week, the Garrettmen travelled to Alexander City to play the Alex City Wildcats. The 'Cats led for a short time by 2-0, the only time during the entire season that Central had trailed. The situation didn't last long, and the Big Red walloped Alex City 4l-l5. On November 22 in Eufaula, the Big Red of '44 closed its' season in a blaze of glory by defeating Eufaula High 34-7. The game brought to a close Coach Tommy Garrett's and Central's first undefeated and untied football season. With tears in their eyes, such players as Jack Farrar, Leroy Propst, Billy Kennedy, Roy Morgan, Gene Tillery, Pete Harris, and Bill Benton left the field, it was all over, they had played their last game for Central. Coach Garrett had pulled them through. We had at last reached the top. The starting lineup was composed of Roy Morgan at left end, Alt. Captain Jack Farrar at left guard, Bill Benton at center, Herbert Shipp at right guard, Tillery at right end, Milton Stewart at quarterback, Pete Harris at left halfback, halfback, and Leroy Propst at fullback. Leroy Propst scored 149 points to lead the team in that department. He for two years in succession. Gene Tillery and Bill Benton earned places on the SUMMARY OF BASKETBALL Central had a very fine year in basketball, also. With two regulars, Orum This season will live forever! Billy Kennedy at left tackle, Captain James Harris at right tackle, Gene Tex Mitchell or Paul Moran at right also made All-Southern and All-State third string All-State team. Hamner and Leroy Propst, and four lettermen, Pete Harris, Jack Farrar, Leon Hilyer and Roy Browning, returning from last year, Coach Garrett moulded a first class team. Captain Orum Hamner was the offensive threat of the team. He held down a starting forward berth and spark- plugged the team. He was especially good on set shots and looping one hand 5h0fS from the C0 ne S- OleY WHS 3 consistent performer. Alternate Captain Leon Hilyer, the most improved man on The Team, held the other 0DeninCJ beffh el' forward. They defeated every B team which they met. The Bic Red marched fo I6 Srralqlqf wing before ragpng defeat at the hands of Valley High 32-52. This was the worst name of the entire season that our boys played. Valley High Was The Only team to turn the trick on the Devils. We snlit a four name series with them during the season, but lost the deciding one in the finals of the Tournament. The Devils had wonderful Support all the way, They really played fine ball and drew a lot of interest. The crowds at the names were usually overflowing. Central finished the renular season with 17 wing and 2 losses. The largest crowd of the season watched the final game in which we downed Baker Village 39-30 after a surprising battle, Shortly after this, we entered the Fourth District Tournament at Langdale to defend the championship we had held for 2 straight years. ln the first round Five Points was defeated handily, 48-25. In a spectacular ball game, we edged Lanett 42-40 in the last five seconds to enter the finals. Valley represented the lower bracket by defeating Milltown 30-26, iust prior to our defeat of Lanett. After a very gruelling game, we lost to Valley High in the finals 4l-39. This was really a heartbreaking game, but the Devils put up a gallant battle and went down fighting. After the finals, an eight man All-Tournament team, selected by the coaches, was announced. Central placed Captain Orum Hamner, Alt. Capt. Leon Hilyer, and our Most Valuable Player, Leroy Propst, on this team. The individual scoring for the season and tournament games is as follows: Hamner 309, Hilyer 244, Propst 212, Harris 41, Farrar 36 and Browning 32. We played 22 games in all for a season's record of I9 wins and 3 losses. We will really miss Hamner, Hilyer, Propst, Harris, Farrar, Brown, Tillery, Green, and Sheheane next year. They will be gone, but not forgotten. Good luck to the team of '46L ' . ww S H-'A--1F ' N V. ' H Lg 'F . Pig' ffl., ,W m Q ,- X gg- xx ,Q Nw. xx, .......... N www ,, .., -. ., .
