Continues Tradition The National Honor Society is an organization whose purpose is to cre- ate enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools. Through NHS chapter service ac- tivities, members maintain and ex- tend the qualities that won them se- lection. Membership is thus both an HONOR and an OBLIGATION. Over the past year NHS students at Central participated in many activi- ties to raise money, such as the Hal- low-gram sale, a charity food and fund drive for Christmas, a Santa Claus picture sale, a M8cMfReeses sale, and many others. All of the mon- ey that was raised went towards civic donations, scheduled activities and scholarships for 4.0 graduating sen- iors at Central. The National Honor Society at Central is involved in many things, many things the average student does not hear about but without the NHS many people would be left unaided. Officers for this year are President Joel Quine, Vice President William Smith, Secretary Kimberly Hoede- man, and Treasurer Scott Dickson. Under the new leadership of Mr. Fred Vest the 1983-1984 PROSPECTUS will have a unique style. The yearbook is commemorating Flint Central High school's sixtieth anniversary. Each of the division pages has pictures from past yearbooks and throughout the year- book special sections will highlight certain aspects of early Central life. Another unique aspect of the 1983-1984 yearbook is the fact that it was put together by a computer. Mr. Vest's computer made the job a whole lot easierg it edited, filed, and made the whole process practically goof-proof . Much hard work has been put into this book and we, The PROSPECTUS staff, hope it is enjoyed by everyone! Page Fifty-ACTIVITIES BOEC hi h in competition The Flint Central chapter of the Business, Office, and Education Club is one of our more active clubs. It is an intra-curricular activity, in keeping with the Business De- partment objectives of academics, leadership, citizenship, as well as social attributes. Therefore, students become more aware of the importance of taking on responsibil- ities. Each year club members attend regional and state leadership conferences and compete in several areas of office, career, and leadership skills. The officers this year are: President Tracy Hargis, Vice President Maria Anselmo, Secretary Tina Caballero, Treasurer Dawn Moore, Reporter Karen Auten, and Par- liamentarian Lena Isaac. New elements in the Theater program this year includ- ed reserved seating for all performances, season ticket sales, and patron f sponsor program advertising. Central's theater program is under the leadership of Mr. Martin Jennings. Students who actively participate in the Theatre pro- gram have an opportunity to join the INTERNATION- AL THESPIAN SOCIETY-an organization designed to heighten the professionalism and opportunities avail- able to theatre students. The Thespians participate in many programs designed to support the theatre and the arts at Flint Central. This year's Thespian troupe attended the Michigan State Thespian Conference with their musical THE FANTAS- TIKS. It allows students to debate international issues and try to resolve world con- flicts through the development and debate of draft resolu- tions. As members of the U.N. club, students play the roles of United Nations member nations and research all aspects of a country's foreign and domestic policies. Students re- search issues in depth in order that they may attend THE GREAT LAKES MODEL UNITED NATIONS CON- FERENCE which this year was held at Stouffer's Inn in Battle Creek, Michigan. The students involved in the Model U.N. attended the International Conference on African Affairs in November at Michigan State Universi- ty. The students also conducted a mock debate on relative current issues at the Eastland Mall in recognition of Unit- ed Nations Day. In addition, fifteen students, who are senior members of the U.N. Club, participated in the 13th Annual American High School Model United Nations Invitational Confer- ence held March 28th and 29th, in Mexico City, Mexico. The students having the opportunity to attend the simula- tion were: Becky Brandt, Brooke Burroughs, Cindy Col- lard, Kristin Herron, Kim Hoedeman, John Lutton, Joel Quine, Eric Richardson, Linda Roth, Miller Schuck, Bob Sellars, Bill Smith, Paul Streby, Pam Thompson, and Rick Yuille. The first dance is usually the Spirit Week dance, while the final dance of the year is the Senior Prom. In between, there is a Sadie Hawkins dance, and Valentines dance, a Punk Dance, a Fifties dance, and whatever other dance some school group wants to sponsor. The photos on these pages are just a small sampling of the fun and frolic that characterize Central dances. Page Sixty-Four-ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES-Page Sixty-Five Exchange Students The l983-84 school year brought many new faces to Central, from all parts of the world-West Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Brazil. Central was very fortunate to be the host school for five foreign exchange students: Susanne Abrahamsen from Sweden, Anja Pueschel from West Berlin, West Ger- many, Heiner Luntz and Reiner Friedrich from West Germany, and Beatrix Lima from Brazil. These students shared their lives, their cultures, and their best-kept se- crets with many new friends at Central and they shall never be forgotten. HEINER LUNTZ-Being a tourist in America three years ago, Heiner developed a curiosity about Americans, particularly American students and their political views about foreign affairs. As it turns out, he finds that most students have few political opinions and really care little about the subject. Flint is a nice place but rather imper- sonal, he finds. About the USA, Heiner says he likes his friends and the fact that students can drive and be so independent. SUZANNE ABRAHAMSEN-Since being a tourist in America, Suzanne wanted to return and find out more about Americans. She likes the freedom of choice Central offers in the selection of classes. In her Stockholm school, she could choose very few classes, and spent most of her school life in classes with the same people. The girls swim team provided lots of enjoyment and good friends. Page Sixty-Six-ACTIVITIES ANJA PUESCHEL-America was chosen for the place to study because friends told her that only in Amer- ica can she find the real life. She wanted to find out if this was true. Anja is finding school here quite different than in Germany. Her activities here include volleyball, read- ing, watching TV, going to parties, and dancing. REINER FRIEDRICH-The magic of America motivated Reiner to study here, along with the fact that his older brother had also been here and an uncle lives here. Although he misses his friends and the mountains of his homeland, he likes American people, Kentucky Fried Chicken, MacDonalds, Saturday nights, and the swim team. . , j. BEATRIX LIMA-Coming to America has been a long-time wish for Bea. She always wanted to learn Eng- lish with American people and make new friends, while learning more about the United States. She likes every- thing about America. Of course she misses her family, friends, and teachers from home. Central is different from her school in Brazil because there, the teachers move from class to class, not the students. Yes, she likes MacDonalds! Yes, she likes to party! The Humanities Magnet pro- gram is a very important part of the English Department. Students from all over the city come to central to participate in this challenging program, now in its eighth year. New Humanities courses this year include Mythology and World Literature. Mrs. Helen Collins is again teaching several English sections after a lapse of several years. Students are required to take two years of social studies, and many take three years. A city-wide revision of the re- quired courses has taken place, with the new courses being phased in over a three year peri- od. This year, the ninth graders are only being offered World History or World Culture. Next year, only U.S. or American History will fullfill the U.S. History requirement. Also next year there will be a new Economics course. Civics and American government will be offered only in the junior and senior years starting next year. This year, due to declining enrollment while the Civics is being changed from a Freshmen to a Junior class, Central lost John Fouts to Northwestern, and Dick Gale to Whittier. In November, however, Carol Jackson was re- called to Central. Page One Hundred Fifty-Four-ACADEMICS ' x '2- '--Q., lf.
