The theme of the 1982 Prospectus is discovery. Each day in school and in our everyday activities we are discovering new thoughts, ideas, and concepts. There are many mysteries, puzzles and unknown factors that we try to make sense of each day. Our division pages symbolize a popular puzzle in 1982—the Rubiks Cube. Many people have discovered a solution to it and many more attempt to. In carrying out the discovery theme we find that our teams discover new strategies in which to win their games. Our teachers find new strategies to get ideas through to students. Clubs and organizations try to discover new things to do to get students involved. Our students discover new people and new ways of dealing with each other in a learning atmosphere. Hopefully we can continue to make new discoveries to solve the puzzles and mysteries and find the answers that will enrich our years spent at CHS. 2

Addition of Ninth The ninth grades of Whittier, McKinley, Bryant, and Longfellow Junior Highs were moved to the four high schools this year. The ninth grades of Lowell, Holmes and Zimmerman Junior High Schools will move to the four high schools in September 1982. Central High School has approxi- mately 400 ninth graders and next year will have a larger freshman class. Since there are still some ninth grades in junior high, the schedule for the ninth graders at the senior high is slightly different from the sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The ninth grade is on a six hour day while the other classes are on a five hour day. The classes the ninth graders take are similar to the ones they took at the junior high and next year this will be slightly different as we move totally into four year high schools. This is a growing process for students and staff alike. The ninth graders seem to enjoy being a part of senior high even though some of their after school activities are separate. This is necessary because they are on the different time schedule. They participate in sports with the ninth grades of the four senior highs and the three remaining junior highs. As the ninth grade moves out of the junior high school, that school has only seventh and eighth grades and is called a middle school. Central received ap- proximately 25 new staff members this year to accommodate the ninth grade. Teachers who chose to come to Central applied for transfers from junior highs and other senior highs. Central also received another assis- tant principal, Mrs. Stewart. By the time the present ninth grade become seniors, they should be real academic leaders as we all grow together in this new venture of the four year high school. 4 Grade Brings
