Flint Central High School 601 Crapo Street Flint, Michigan 48504 The theme of the 1982 Prospectus is discovery. Each day in school and in our everyday activities we are discovering new thoughts, ideas, and concepts. There are many mysteries, puzzles and unknown factors that we try to make sense of each day. Our division pages symbolize a popular puzzle in 1982—the Rubiks Cube. Many people have discovered a solution to it and many more attempt to. In carrying out the discovery theme we find that our teams discover new strategies in which to win their games. Our teachers find new strategies to get ideas through to students. Clubs and organizations try to discover new things to do to get students involved. Our students discover new people and new ways of dealing with each other in a learning atmosphere. Hopefully we can continue to make new discoveries to solve the puzzles and mysteries and find the answers that will enrich our years spent at CHS. 2 Seniors .... The ninth grades of Lowell, Holmes and Zimmerman Junior High Schools will move to the four high schools in September 1982. Central High School has approxi- mately 400 ninth graders and next year will have a larger freshman class. Since there are still some ninth grades in junior high, the schedule for the ninth graders at the senior high is slightly different from the sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The ninth grade is on a six hour day while the other classes are on a five hour day. The classes the ninth graders take are similar to the ones they took at the junior high and next year this will be slightly different as we move totally into four year high schools. This is a growing process for students and staff alike. The ninth graders seem to enjoy being a part of senior high even though some of their after school activities are separate. This is necessary because they are on the different time schedule. They participate in sports with the ninth grades of the four senior highs and the three remaining junior highs. As the ninth grade moves out of the junior high school, that school has only seventh and eighth grades and is called a middle school. Central received ap- proximately 25 new staff members this year to accommodate the ninth grade. Teachers who chose to come to Central applied for transfers from junior highs and other senior highs. Central also received another assis- tant principal, Mrs. Stewart. By the time the present ninth grade become seniors, they should be real academic leaders as we all grow together in this new venture of the four year high school. 4 Grade Brings New Faces to Central 5 Here’s Looking At You 1. Marty Embry in a quiet moment. 2. Marshall “Bubba” Sanders taking a time out. 3. This Central runner doesn’t mind the cold. 4. Hard at work for the school paper. 11 The Way We Were V ’r , a V It wasn’t long ago that we were wearing romper suits and playing with our teddy bears ... Now we are on our way into adulthood. It seems like just yesterday we were holding on to our mothers hand and crying because we did not want to go to kindergarten. The times between then and now have been good and bad. We will never have those days back again but at times like this reflecting on them can bring back many memories. Top Night For Seniors Graduation night is that somewhat magical, somewhat unbelievable night where the graduates who are participating feel they have achieved a most important goal. Parents and relatives come from all parts of the city and state to honor not only their graduate but the whole class. They reminisce about their own graduation night; perhaps having also graduated from Central. It is a night for memories, a few tears, a lot of laughing, cheering, and hugging. Last of all, it is a night that culminates many years of hard work and is the door to an uncertain, but exciting future. Deborah Fisher is one happy senior! Mr. Crowder happily presents diplomas to graduates. High Achievers Honored Eric Minore and Lesa Arcmia think about their future. Beverly Lewis proudly accepts her honor certificate. Honor students study their certificates. Honors night is a time when students of distinction are honored for their outstanding accomplishments. Various awards are given at this time for sports, academic achievements, service, and community assistance. Students are honored for academic achievements with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Other awards given out are the Napoleon J. LaVoie award. National Honor Society award. Business Co-op award, American Legion award, Tcitlebaum Red and Black award, Robert T. Longway award, and the Trade and Industry Co-op Student of the Year award. 16 dw 1 (L-R) braham. Shiela ere. Season Summary: The 1981 baseball season was a very exciting and successful year. The Indians took first place in the city with a 5-1 record and finished third in the Saginaw Valley Conference with a 16-6 record. Outstanding Member : Key players were Tim Donnel- ly, Roy Garcia, and Eric Minore with Steve Szabo, Jim Badal, Matt Morrow, Matt Marston, and Joe Villago- mez contributing to the winning season. Coaches Comments: (Bob Holec) Most observers picked the Indians to be a mediocre team because of inexperience, but the Indians demonstrated timely hit- ting. good defense and gutty pitching which led them to a fine season. (i) Matt Marston charges home for the winning run. (I) An unknown Indian steals first base. (2) The team comes in after a winning game. (3) Norm Alkema is ready for a big game. We had many fine games but not enough to give us an over- all great record. Outstanding Members: There were some fine perfor- mances by Gary Fisher, Mike Wallen, Jon Beaubien, and Joe Valasquez. Coaches Comments: (Jerry Lane) The junior varsity was a season of mediocracy. The Indians did not dem- onstrate the consistency to have a winning season al- though we had some fine players. With this great stance, it’s got to be a home run. Strong Comeback Leads To Even Season 36 Experience Leads To Future Stars A Central catcher hopes for a strike out. Quality Central’s Faculty has increased this year due to the new ninth graders. Fifteen new teachers were brought over from several junior highs to join the staff. Many of them are new to high school teaching and are experiencing the different methods of high school oper- ations as opposed to junior high. These people on the staff come from many diverse backgrounds. One staff member manages a restaurant in her spare time, one is involved with archery, many love to ski and still others coach and are involved in oth- er extracurricular activities. In 1945 he entered the Navy and traveled around the world for five years. He left as a first class electrician. He entered Indiana State and graduated with degrees in science. He taught math for one year at Whittier Junior High before coming here. Things have changed since his first day here. The classes have decreased in offerings from a one time high of fiteen chemistry classes. Another big change is the landscape. Then, Mott College was a corn field, the library, planitarium and other surrounding buildings didn’t exist. He says the only difference in students is they used to study harder. Mr. Foos married his wife in college and they have three sons. In his free time he likes to read and work with wood. Sometime in the future he would like to travel to England and Germany. She received her training from General Motors Institute. She is married, has no children and is an antique buff. She has been collecting hat pin holders since 1955. She gets along with all the staff and loves all aspects of her job. She is thinking of retiring in the near future. 119 ' English Teacher Is Advocate Of The Arts Richard Plourde, English teacher, enjoys many hobbies when he isn’t teaching. Mr. Plourde loves to ski, and has been doing so since 1959. He said, learning to use the toes is the easiest aspect of the sport. The hardest aspect is what skiing does to your muscles. Mr. Plourde collects classical records, and owns a large audio system. He reads both contemporary and classical novels, likes photography, and playing paddleball. He traveled around Europe and the United States several times. He loves Central, and gets along well with his students. If he wasn’t teaching, he would be in advertising. New ninth grade teach- ers are Sue Goering, Nora Gou- let, Mamie Moore, and Karen Rochell. The classes are split into three modules. The first module includes Reading Development I, practical writing (which is a re- quired class for sophomores), fic- tion for teens, and people to re- member. Module number two is a higher level that offers indepen- dent reading, modern literature, word power, successful writing, and communications. Module three includes advanced composi- tion, mythology, and Journalism I. Each module offers skills, writ- ing, and literature. Patricipalion is an important element in class. Eloise Jones takes timeout for a smile. 132 Classes For Newsmakers f -v Miss Abbott checks final layouts. Typing is an important part of journalism. There are three classes offered in the jour- nalism department. The first is an intro- ductory course which teaches the basics needed for a good foundation in journal- ism. The yearbook and newspaper staffs are also conducted as classes. Require- ments to get on the staffs are to take Jour- nalism 1 first or to have previous yearbook or newspaper experience. The introduc- tory class studies newswriting, the elec- tronic media, advertising, and the differ- ent forms of mass media. They also produce a video taped news show. 133 The Magnet Program at Central continues to offer stu- dents a strong introduction to history, art, philosophy, mu- sic, religion, and literature. Such courses as arts and ideas, world civilizations, world religions, and humanities offer every student unique opportunities for intellectual stimulus and growth. Here at Central, students are also offered to participate in the Model United Nations project represent- ing the interests of countries they may have previously not known. John Hicks thoughtfully listens to the lecture. Helen McLogan catches the cameramans eye. These students keep a smile. 134 Sometimes humanities can be a sedative. Central’s Wind Ensemble traveled to St. Louis to compete in the Mid-West Band Festival in 1980-81, and received an overall rating of II. This year, with a 37% increase in size, the wind en- semble traveled to Toronto to participate in the International Music Festival. Hav- ing performed at the Hyatt Regency in Flint, and several schools in the area, the instrumental music department was en- gaged in an active year. The brass section seems very interested in this number. Mr. Macl.can is always willing to help. 139 Communications Take Different Forms Students have two options to choose from in the for- eign language curriculum. French and Spanish are taught by Mrs. Coleman (Epps) and Mr. Graves. Stu- dents studying French this year attended a perfor- mance by Marcel Marceau, have gone to luncheons, plays, and foreign language festivals. Over Easter break, the class also went to Paris, France, which was the ninth trip since 1971. Students in their first year of Spanish use a lot of question and answer dialogue, while the second through fourth year students gain a wider vocabulary and better control of the language. Diane Conover practices writing in French. (TOP) Mr. Graves helps Laura Hocking with last nights homework. (MIDDLE LEFT) Students quickly look over notes for todays big test. The Central High School bilingual program pro- vides bilingual students with the opportunity to de- velop their bilingual skills in Spanish as well as English. Students are encouraged to communicate in two languages and are made aware of the impor- tance of the Hispanic cultures and history. Stu- dents with a limited proficiency of the English lan- guage and newly arrived students in the United States are given the necessary listening and speak- ing skills that will enable them to acquire the much needed structure and vocabulary to function in the immediate environment before making a smooth transition into the regular classroom. Students Learn American Way Broadway Comes To Central The Drama Department presented an excit- ing line-up this year including classes in act- ing, improvision, and survey of theatre. These classes were taught by Mr. Jennings, head of the Drama Department. The first mainstage play presented was a comedy: “The Impossi- ble Years . “Babes in Arms” was the spring musical presentation. In addition to producing plays, the Drama Department participated in the Fine Arts Festival. They also visited plays at local the- atres and toured the Children’s Theatre. Mr. Tom Quinn came to Central from McKinley Junior High School and is teaching sculpture, ceramics, jewelry mak- ing, and drawing. Mr. Art Koskinen is concentrating on drawing, painting, and print making. Mr. Dale Gleason has classes in poster making, drawing, and painting. Judging from the large classes, Central students are in- terested in taking art. Thedepartment is cooperative with the Sloan Museum by providing art work for their Broth- erhood Month exhibit. If looks could kill . By the look on her face, you see that Diana Reed loves to cook. Home Ec Adds Spice To Life Home Economics offers students the opportunity to learn how to cook and sew. In cooking, a person who couldn’t boil water before can learn to prepare basic foods and also some special dishes. Sewing classes teach the basics of sewing, such as sewing on a button, as well as repairing garments and creat- ing new clothes. Both classes offer the use of modern equipment. These classes, which help prepare students for the future, are taught by Mrs. Givens and Mrs. Turner. 146 Mrs. Givens enjoys a laugh with her students. Margie Gocring and Denise Dunn study current fashion. Angela Moore checks out a good book. Through the use of the Central High School media center, the faculty, staff, and student body can dis- cover the past, present, and future. Our collection of books, periodicals, video cassette tapes, films, records, micro-film, micro-fiche, and other printed forms provide an excellent opportunity for broad- ening our readers, viewers, and listeners in their quest for knowledge and experience. Students enjoy quiet times in the library. Mrs. Cook librarian, is always willing to help out. Library Fulfills Many Purposes 147 Industrial Arts Builds Skills The Industrial Arts Department consists of classes that attempt to duplicate some of the manufacturing and related processes used in modern industry. Classes include automotive, small engines, drafting, welding, and industrial materials and processes. Many stu- dents, both male and female, can get a major or minor in Industrial Arts to fulfill their graduation require- ments. 148 A girl in auto mechanics?! Mr. Foos with service student Tanya Lane. Students who elect service as one of their classes at Central are offered many options in which they can be of assistance. Teachers and administrators find them invaluable for doing little jobs such as typing, running errands, answering phones and filing. Opportunities to be a service student include working in the attendance and main offices, the counseling office, the nurse’s office, radio station WFBE, and the science labs. Gain Experience Through Service Healthy Body=Healthy Mind Physical Education, a required course at Central, gives students the opportunity to de- velop not only their physical capabilities but mental capabilities as well. Through such ac- tivities as golf, bowling, tennis, swimming, and weight lifting students improve their physiques and coordination. After participat- ing in group sports such as basketball, volley- ball, and softball, they learn teamwork. How- ever, the most beneficial lesson learned is sportsmanship. WFBE is a public ra- dio station, a part of National Public Radio, a network of 270 stations. Be- cause it uses no commercials, W FBE is funded by federal money and by contributions from local citizens. In addition to a busy broadcasting day (from 6 a.m. to 12 midnight), WFBE also has a class for high school students interested in radio. Part of the radio class is held in regu- lar classrooms where students learn about the history and development of radio. The new and complete staff worked hard to produce an informative paper for the student body. Un- der the leadership of Miss Abbott and of the editors Kevin Korhonen and Kim Richards, the staff has improved the paper by far over last year’s paper. With the increase in enroll- ment and training of many underclassmen, the paper is sure to improve in the years to come. Good newspaper reporters always copy-edit their stories. Carlton Edwards does a little bit of everything. Arrowhead Trains Future Re- porters Editor Kim Richards types up a story. Chris Pavelich amuses Rich and John with a joke. Advisor and editor share same thoughts. Miss Abbott—the only one relaxing! Lots of decisions need to be made for the yearbook. This year Flint Central’s yearbook. Pro- spectus, has a totally new look. With the help of changing to a new company, Herff- Jones Yearbooks, the yearbook Represen- tative Mr. Alan Eicher, the Advisor Miss Abbott, and the Editor Tanya Lane, the 1981-82 yearbook will have many section changes. Sections in which these changes occur include the faculty section, the sports section, the index which is now the directory, the table of contents, and the opening section. Much hard work has been put into this book and we hope it is enjoy- able to everyone. Rebuilding Year For Prospectus Student Council Tomorrow’s Leaders The Student Council is a group of students chosen by their classmates to represent the class. There is a president, vice-president, secretary- treasurer, and representatives for each class. There is also a president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer elected for the council. The meetings are held twice a month. Mr. Beaubien, Mr. Brown and Mrs. Ratner are the sponsors. The activities held this year were spirit week, student exchange with other schools and other educational activities. Students involved in student council learn leadership and organization. 2. 1) John Hicks listens attentively 2) Sponsors help in decision making 3) Officers make important dicisions 160 Tradition Provides Good Times Mr. Willey supervises the pie eating contest. The dance contest is always popular. Spirit Week is the annual event sponsored by the Student Council. Events are planned for each day after school for students and teach- ers to participate in. The pie eating contest, dance contest, spelling bee, obstacle course and swimming are just a few of the activities. Points are awarded to the class who wins each event and a class is determined the winner at the end of the week with the higher number of points. There were 49 juniors welcomed into NHS and re- ceiving certificates and 52 seniors who received NHS pins. The officers were: President—Fredericka Ba- shir; Vice-President—By- ron Roberts; Secretary— Tracey Hurd; and Treasur- er—Beverly Lewis. Black History Awareness Week Wendell Harris and Ben Shaw recreate a scene from Black History. Black History was celebrated at Central in many ways. Many teachers did classroom projects and made hall exhibits. There were black facts announced daily over the P.A. system. The culmination of the week was celebrated in an assembly. The guest speakers were Wendell Harris, Jr. and Ben A. Shaw III. The assembly was a blend of poetry, lecture and quiz. Mr. Harris is the president of Gethsemane 84, Inc., the producers of Black Biography. The assembly was arranged by Ms. Green, a Special Ed. teacher here at Central. 163 New Addition The Hyatt Regency Hotel. Flint, opened on November 19 in the company of state dignitaries, the Northern High School Band and many townspeople. The Hyatt is a main force in the renovation of the downtown area. It is hoped more people will come to the Hyatt to stay for an overnight visit, rather than go to the hotels on the fringes of the city. Many of the schools in the area plan on holding their proms at the Hyatt. It Is Not a White Cloud. It is not a white cloud I see. There are no clouds today. It is not gray—or could it be? There are no clouds today. It is a happy, crazy day. But there are no clouds today. Here is the tall green grass I lay. Are there no clouds today? It is yellow, orange and brown. Those look like clouds today. Why is it covering my town? Could be some clouds today. Why are my people dying? Is it the clouds today? There are no clouds today. No clouds today. No today, by Carin G. Corser it will be a great day when our schools get all the money they need and the air force has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber 172 Farewell Any man’s death diminishes Me because I am involved in mankind . .. Come fall, someone else will step into our places and take over our responsibilities. During the past year, there have been happy moments and hassled moments— no matter which one we were faced with, we could always count on you to be there. Forever we were blessed with you spirit, love, and guidance. In the future, when we look at the yearbooks we produced, we can always thank you for how you made us turn our yearbook around—in just one year, by changing to Herff Jones Co. and having you, Alan Eichcr as a representative. When we look at our yearbook we’ll have memories of deadlines, shortage of money, awards for our efforts, and the afternoons we spent working together. No one can ever take these memories from us, nor can they take the knowledge you've given us and the experience that has helped to make us stronger and wiser. There is one thing we can be certain of as we leave high school and move on to other things: our lives will be richer because you inspired our talents and encouraged us to be leaders. The dedication you have shown in teaching us the art of journalism will always be remembered. Thanks, Alan! With love from your hard workers of the Central Prospectus.
