Addition and subtraction, proofs and theorems, ex- ponents and logarithms, compasses and erasers— all of these were part of the challenge faced by math students this year at Central. Mathematics combined the old and the new. In math courses pupils studied things which their grandfathers probably studied, but interwoven with them were ideas which were so new that until recently, they were studied only in college. Accuracy, skill in calculations, and especially com- mon sense were necessary for success in dealing with math. Because it is used in all the sciences and in many nonscientific occupations, mathematics has been proven to be a powerful tool.
