Van Wrlliams Dewey Stevens and B111 Iames were the first team letter winner material our coaches had to work with To th1s group Auer added B111 Billings flashy sophomore krckrng star Bart Ienniches all city halfback Louis Szabo lack Marr Ralph Locke and Doug Trevarthen in the backfield Head line coach B111 Melzow had good mater1al led by lames Al1C1ty All Valley All Western Michi gan and All State guard Stevens A11C1ty All Valley and All Western Michigan tackle Chuck Knowles Oscar and Art Ingram Kerth and Ken Averill Dick Francis lim Bishop Al Beam Stan Chalmers Don Coleman and Howard Welch Central opened the season September 21 aga1nst Ann Arbor High School The Pioneers made it look tough at first but after solving the riddle of theu triple lateral commonly known as the Mlnnesota Lateral the Indians handed out a 26 to 7 pastlng The Indians added another victory over Muskegon 24 to 20 The Big Beds were the only team to defeat us in 1945 and, determined to give their retiring coach undefeated season, looked definitely rough. But Bill Billings took the ball on a return punt and ran forty yards to pay dirt, catching Muskegon unawares. The Reds smashed back to lead 13 to 6, and 13 to 12, before Central added a brace of touchdowns to win.
