Coach Howard Auer was assisted by Bill Melzow for the 45 season. Stan Broome was on hand in his old job of trainer. fs: HOWARD AUER Coach For the first trme smce 1940 Central won its openrng game The v1ct1m Ann Arbor was edged out 1n the last s1x mmutes of play when the Tribe shoved over two touchdowns to win 21 to 13 In the second game the runner up for the State championship Muskegon trounced Cen tral 14 to 0 in a sea of mud' at Atwood Stadrum. In this contest Central hindered by the mud could not use its speed to any advantage. Coming back the following week the Tribe nicked Lansing Sexton 12 to O. I. Thomas took part in both scores passing to Hank Minarik for the first and dashing 84 yards for the second marker. At Saginaw for the next game Central completely outclassed the Trojans 25 to 0. Van Williams taking over the plunging spot after Scott was injured scored twice. At Atwood Stadium the next week Owosso was beaten 37 to 19. After scoring four touchdowns in the first period, the Indian starters were kept out of play for more than half the game. Again going to Saginaw, Central ruined any title hopes Arthur Hill may have had by run- ning wild to a lop-sided 26 to 0 victory. It was Iesse Thomas all the way, dashing 113 yards and passing for 80. 16' A 1' 'W Behind perfect interference Thomas heads down the sidelines for a long gam VARSITY FOOTBALL The Indians employed the same sudden punch they had used all season in whipping Bay City 40 to 13 Central dropped Pontiac 33 to 6 in a like manner two weeks later In this game too the reserves got in their share of play going in for over half of the second period Flint Northern Centrals arch rival and last victim of the 1945 season fell before a record crowd as the Tribe pushed over three touch downs and converted once to win 19 to 0 Some 17000 people saw Central equal 1ts largest point margin over Northern in 18 years of Turkey Day competition By winning this game the Tribe retained undisputed posses s1on of first place in the Valley and was given permanent possession of the current Wildanger Trophy for their third straight triumph over Northern. No other team from Central has been able to win the all-important third game. Opening the battle Harold Scott kicked off to Bob LaBoche. Both Northem and Central had possession of the ball in the next few plays, but neither was in scoring position, until Gene Vaughn, Indian guard, pounced on cr fumble on the Viking 19. On the next play Van Williams carried the ball to the ll. Scott plunged six more yards, then Iesse Thomas reversed around Northerns left end and went the remaining distance for a touchdown. The extra point was missed, the score read 6 to O. Central took over the ball on Northerns 9 as the second period opened In four plays the Tribe struggled to the one yard stripe only to lose the ball on downs After an exchange of fumbles which gave Central the ball on Northems 26 Thomas again broke loose for 13 yards From here Scott went to the 8 and Van Williams striking from a T formation went over for the second touchdown Again the try for the extra point was missed The half ended as Central had the ball on the Viking 6 Centrals frst Wildanger Trophy IAQT' ' ,-'. , - 1 , , I ,, Uwe 14:11 , 3 C Runnrng m the plav that brought vrctorxes all season Thomas breaks away for another touchdown VARSITY FOOTBALL Northern recelved the k1Ck off 1n the second half but was unable to advance After a sertes of plays Central took over the ball on 1ts own 32 yard 11ne From here Thomas W1ll1ams and W1ll1e Revord pushed the ball to mrd held Then W1ll1ams agam took tt and after stazrtlng over rlght tackle turned left and outran the Vlklng defense to the goal 1ne Bevord Splll the upnghts w1th h1S place k1ck makrng the f1nal score 19 to O In taklng the Wrldanger Trophy Central was successful 1n a feat wh1ch 1t has never ach1eved 1n the 18 years of compet1t1on Only once before d1d Central have two legs on the Coach A er rs car red off the held at the clxmax of hrs most successful season plon North End eleven swept up and down the held to w1n by three touchdowns December brought the select1on of the All Valley team and the Indlans placed the unprecedented number of s1x men Those honored were End Hank lVI1nar1k Tackle Don Cummlngs Guard Gene Vaughn Center Al Iohnson Halfback Iesse Thomas and Fullback Harold Scott When the All State eleven was announced the name of Central stood very promment On the fxrst team were Al Iohnson and Hank M1nar1k whlle the second team roster lncluded Van W I1 ams scores from the T for Centrals second touchdown o e Northe Q .aw 'H' . . 1. .
