Locations have been changed. new text- books have been adopted and equipment has been modernized. Boys and girls have graduated. Their sons and daughters and their grandsons and grand- daughters have followed them through her class- rooms. Many hundreds of teachers have composed her changing faculty. It is the total of all these things, and all these people. that make the Central High School that we know today. Not least among the means of bring- ing this total forward to us has been the Prospectus. Its annual review of activities and achievements has bound each year to the past and to the future. It has helped to fix the spirit of loyalty and service which we like to think of as the sprit of Central High School. As a link of this chain, l greet the Prospectus of 1943. I. E. Wellwood. Principal The real Central High School is not a building of brick and stone it is you and the thousands of other young men and young women of the classes which have gone before you. You have created a something which we call the 'Central Spirit.' I can wish nothing finer for you than that the Central spirit may go with you in the years that are ahead. They will be difficult years, for you will share, with all the other young men and women of the world. the responsibility of bring- ing a lasting peace to the world. If this Central Spirit goes with you, you will face this opportunity with courage even though for some of you it means death itself. Our faith is in you. Florence E. Riddell, Asst. Principal SENIOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS Front Row: Alma Irving, Marjorie Smith, Ben Farah, Donna Merrill, Frank Talarico, Lois Crane. Millie Purdue. Middle Row: Mary Ann Iohnson, Ioyce Macy. Lois McPhee. Dorothy McKinley, Louella Eggebrecht, Lorraine Fisher lean Shepherd, Betty Bradtield. Back Row: Malcolm Halliday, Charles Elder, Ioy Priehs, Elizabeth Clark, lay Ward Lou lane I-leystek, Irene Wierzbicki, Phil Van Kersen, Stacey DeCamp. 1 1 SENIOR OFFICERS Ioyce Macy, secretary: Donna Merrill, treasurer: Elizabeth Clark, vice-president: Pillip Van Kersen, president. BOARD OF DIRECTORS Despite the fact that the Board of Directors of each class is not well known, this body has an important part to play in the smooth functioning of such a large school as Cen- tral. The purpose ot this organization is to make decisions concerning the activities of a particular class and to carry them out. The Sophomore Board of Directors for the present graduating class planned the Sopho- more Student Union Party under the leader- ship of Stacey DeCamp, its president. Assist- ing Stacey with the arrangements were the other officers: Dorothy lohnson, vice-presi- dent: Bethany Fraser, secretary: and Dolly Stone, treasurer. The Iunior Board of Directors for the class of 1943 concerned itself principally with their lunior Play, Bab. The board in 1942 was headed by Philip Van Kersen. Dorothy Iohn- son repeated for vice-president: Dolly Stone moved up to secretary, while Donna Merrill took charge of the treasury. When it comes to deciding details of gradua- tion, the Senior Board of Directors is kept exceedingly busy. The members must lay all plans for the senior dance and make ar- rangements for the annual Baccalaureate. The Senior Board also chooses the class colors and announcements. In addition to their other tasks this group must assist with the Commencement Exercises. Supervision of these activiities was the duty of Phillip Van Kersen, who was re-elected president of his class. Elizabeth Clark, loyce Macy, and Don- na Merrill were vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively. ADAMS. CE THAL The football squad finished this year with the very fine record of 6 victories and 1 loss. This record is excellent considering the number of bril- liant players lost by graduation last year. As usual the team had its share of new recruits who will undoubtedly go on next year as veterans. using their experience in placing us on the winning side. The vigor and enthusiasm possessed this year by our squad has never been surpassed by previous Indian teams. Coach Auer did a splendid job of molding together the veterans and new- comers into a smooth working team. He was assisted by Ierry Udell, backtield coach, and Stan Broome, trainer. Fullback Lynn Chandnois was again honored for his outstanding work by being chosen as All-Valley back. Up to the Thanksgiving game he was the high point man of the Valley. In addition he started in every game and seemed to be the main stimulus for each victorious drive. Other outstanding backs were Ioe Ponsetto, Phil Harding, Ben Adams, Carl Snider. and Perry Mac- Manama. Ioe Ponsetto was the squad's quarterback, whose job it was to call tions to Ice Ponsetto, Tribe captain, and star back. 1249 1943 VARSITY Name Pos. Name Pos. Curtis Gould .,.......... In addition to his other duties, Ioe was called upon to do the placement kicking for the Tribe. Ben Adams and Phil Harding, two of the half backs, were especially good runners. The other two halfbacks, Carl Smith and Perry MacManama, were excellent blockers and were used primarily in defensive work. At the beginning of the year most people were of the opinion that the forward wall would be weak because of only one returning letterman. These critics, however, were later forced to change their minds. Some outstanding linemen of the year were Larry Leighton, Tom Smith, Curtiss Gould, and Bill Drake. In Central's game with Pontiac the Tribe swept to a 19-0 victory over the Chiefs. This game, played under the lights at the Atwood Stadium, showed that the Indians were in especially fine trim. At the opening of the first quarter Chandnois went off left end and drove for a 54-yard touchdown, making the first talley of the game. In the second quarter, three touchdowns were made but were nullified by penalties, and Chandnois dashed for a 72-yard touchdown at the end of the quarter. Again in the third quarter the ball was marched to Pontiac's 6-yard line and was then taken off left end by Chandnois for the final touchdown. Ponsetto's placement went through the uprights, making the final score 19-O. The Tribe scored an 8-0 victory over Saginaw Eastern at Atwood Stadium. although a blizzard proved to be a grave handicap to both teams. In the half Smith drove through Saginaw's line for a safety. In the second half a Trojan pass was intercepted by Chandnois, who ran with it to the 17-yard line. Lynn then went off end to score the final touchdown. As usual on Thanksgiving Day, Central was pitted against the very powerful and undefeated team of Northern. The Vikings won the game by the score of 19-0. -1,-,,,1-l-- 71 Q ' VARSITY BASKETBALL BASKETBALL RESERVE TEAM F ont Ro Ea l C awfo d Nerl Ro rrcr KGIILI Chrsholm Lefty WllklDSOn lack Hodge Bob Yocp e Back R Bob Ova1tt Elmo Gratsch Wally Knoblock Raymond Steffen Ted Delou al Henry M narrk BASKETBALL RESERVE TEAM There was no Sophomore team th1s year so the job of tra1n1ng and g1v1ng expenence to new recrurts fell on Ierry Udell and hrs re rve squad There were Just sophomores and jumors on the reserve team because one of the pur poses of the re erve sauad 1S to supply players for the next season In the IIISI game agamst Owosso the Tr1be went un checked on the court to run up a score of 43 to Owosso s 12 The Ind1ans nosed ou the Arthur H111 reserves by the score of 4133 The cagers cont1nued thexr tr1umphs to three games at the expense of the Pont1ac Chrefs 2515 Northern tr1pped up the Tr1be and stopped therr streak of three games m a very clo e and hard fought battle The fmal score wa 1518 In the econd Northe nCentral t1tl play off Central lost by f1ve pomt Iney went on to beat Sag1naw aga1n 38 28 and nosed o t th lxorthe n reserves 28 25 The sea on record Vw as erjht game won and four lost Front R Iunror Tucker Lefty Morr1ll dde Mller Co ny Oxendme Ioe Hahn Back Row Harley Ste ens T bby Wl11lGmS Phrl p T1myan Don Skaff Iack Petrrll Bob Lambert Ken Mrchaels VARSITY BASKETBALL About December 1 the basketball team began pract1ce for the1r f1rst game of the year w1th Lans1ng Eastern on December 15 Coach Evans had only two 1 ttermen re turnmg Lynn Chandnors and Don Skaff but as the season progressed three sophomores Ph1l Trmyan Ioe Hahn and Bob Lambert drstlngurshrng themselves w1th frne play1ng and good ball handlmg played regularly wrth the varslty The game w1th Lansrng Eastern was lost 1n the over tlme perrod by a free throw however the frrst game 1n valley competrtron was taken from Owosso by a w1de margm Paced by Chandno1s th y coasted to an easy vlctory of 45 22 Later the Trlbe wa held rn check by a powerful Arthur H111 team w1th a score of 47 25 but re covermg from th1s setback the Indrans defeated the Pon The f1rst game of the crty serles was 1'11pG1'1d1UCk wrth Cornelrus Oxendrne collect1ng 8 po1nts as the team captured the f1rst leg of the c1ty t1tle 25 22 but the V1k1DqS later took crty champ1onsh1p Contmumg the1r f1ne play the squad downed Bay C1ty 29 18 Although Lynn Chand no1s tossed 11 po1nts and played one of hrs b st game the Tribe tumbled before a strong Arthur H111 team 38 31 Don Skaff and Oxend1ne were elected as co capta ns The season s results agalnst valley competrtron were 7 games won and 5 lost Includmg the pre season and tournament results the total was 7 games won and 8 lo t -- 1 6 N 'I v hs ,- .9 u y 7 -gf 1 ' l ,, Xf' 5X ' D o A ow: ' , ',E1 1 , r . 1 v ,u , 'i ' , , 1 . e - . . , , .
