CROSS COUNTRY-Front Row: F. Smith CCoachJ, Carl Cooper, Steve La Porte, Samford McGlone. Leslie Howey. Back Row: Bill Stephenson, Rutilio Enzastiga, Bill Wells, Clarence Heid, Iim Massar, Charles Zeitz. REGIONAL AND STATE CHAMPIONS Coach Francis Smith's 1941 Cross- Country team proved to be one of the best teams ever to be produced at Central. Paced by Rutilio Enzastiga the tribe harriers went through the entire season undefeated, including a victory by the second team over Saginaw. Central continued its excellent record by going on to win the Regional and State Titles. Ruglio Enzastiga, Bill Wells, Iimmie Massar, Bill Stevenson, Stan- ford McGlone and Charlie Zietz made up the team that won the Regional and State crowns for the third time in the last four years. The absence of Enzastiga, one of Central's greatest cross-country and track stars, will be a big loss to the 1942 team but Coach Smith will have enough veterans and new material for a very promising team in 1942.

Back Row: Jack Kennedy, Francis Hudson, Melbourne Pottruff, Clare Weaver, Dave Elston SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL Central was fortunate in again hav- ing a fine Sophomore basketball team. Ierry Udell lcoachl was responsible for the fine record of the team. Since the Sophomore squad trains and develops men for the Varsity it is invaluable to the basketball set-up. In the first of the series the boys were on the short end of the score 5 out of 7 times. However, in the final series, they did an about- face, coming out the victor 5 out of 7 times, showing the splendid improve- ment that was the reward of hard work. Co-captains for the first team were lack Hodge and Neal Rohner. First team members were Lefty Morrell, Eddy Mil- ler, Chet Wilkinson, Rex Parsell, Keith Chisholm, and Al Harris. RESERVE BASKETBALL Outstanding play was shown by the Reserves this season. Out of fourteen games Central's Warriors emerged with twelve scalps. Promising players on the Reserves were Elmo Gratsch, a 10-B, Dick Hallwood, and Bud Dulude. CITY CHAMPIONS 1941 Central's 1941 Track team had an exceedingly fine season, winning all their scheduled meets, winning the regions, and placing seventh in the state contest. The state meet provided keen com- petition for the Tribe, but through the combined efforts of the season's stars, Iohn Thompson, Auldin Nelson, Hank Clark, Steve Le Porte, and Rutilio Enzastiga, they came through for a 14 V2-point seventh-place berth for Coach Francis Smith's training efforts. So far in the 1942 season Central has met Northem but once. In this meet the Tribe broke three city records and also broke the Dort Field shot put record. Hank Clark shattered the former city mark for the half-mile event by making it in 2:02.3. Central placed first, second, and third in this event. The final score was Northern 67, Central 37. Indian Thinclads defeated Saginaw SSW to 48W in spite of Saginaw's slams in the 100-yard dash and pole vault. Central slammed in the W-mile and took first and second in the mile, both hurdles and the high jump. The Regionals at Owosso and the State meet were uncertain quantities.
