STUDENT COUNCIL STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS--Douglas Mintline, vice president: Mary Danger, recording secretary: lean Chisholn president: Shirley Ienson. corresponding secretary. Breaking all precedence in Central's history, Iean Chisholm was the first girl ever to be elected president of the Student Union. The other officers selected were: Douglas Mintline, vice-president: Shirley Iensen, corresponding secretary: and Mary Ranger, recording secretary. Members of the council from the three classes aided the officers in fulfilling various projects. The advisor for the council was Miss Grace Pinel. In addition to maintaining its regular business and its permanent com- mittees, the council took on other duties. A special committee was appointed to make plans for increasing the Student Union membership next year. In doing its part for national defense the council put on an extensive paper drive in which the goal was set for 35,000 pounds. Tubes of all kinds were also collected. The money received from these papers and tubes was used to purchase air-raid equipment and war savings bonds. These bonds will be a reserve fund that will be used to build new tennis courts after the war. Records were also bought for the noon-hour dancing in the girls' gym. A W' V Central: Student Body pledges Allegiance to the Flag in Physical Fitness Rally. COLONEL W A GANOE WAR COUNCIL The War Council, a vitally important organization, was formed this year in Central High School. Maintaining Central's part in the war effort, the Council undertook many worthwhile projects. It sponsored air raid warden service and training, first aid training, paper and tube conservation, fumiture making for service hospitals, knitting and sewing for the Red Cross, and making airplane models for the Navy. A campaign was carried on in which a group of students talked informally with the student body to impress them with the need of complete co-operation for victory. This campaign boosted paper conservation, sale of defense stamps, and enrollment of parents and students in Civilian Defense. On April 17, 3,700 Central Students lined up on Dort' Field to pledge themselves to health and the flag. Colonel W. A. Ganoe, professor of Military Science at the University of Michigan, spoke on the importance of physical fitness. Colonel Ganoe said that the health program in Flint schools was the best of any he had observed in the State and might pave the way for similar programs in other parts of the country. The students made the following health pledge: My country's a country of millions like me, as I am weak or I am strong so my nation will be. I will keep myself fit and guard my health well, for good health is a weapon no vendor can sell. The following are the members of the War Council: chainnan, Dan Sullivan: vice-chairman, Iean Chisholm: secretary, Stacy DeCamp7 Arlene Atherton, Miss Florence Riddell, Mr. E. R. Iones, Miss Hazel Hoyt, Miss Grace Pinel, Mr. Thomas Davey, Mr. Howard Iackson, and Mr. S. O. Broome. Mr. and Mrs. Ioe Piazza were alumni members and Mr. and Mrs. D. L. McTaggart, Mr. and Mrs. Iohn De Camp, and Mrs. Floyd Valleau were the parents participating in the program. VALLEY AND CITY CHAMPIONS It will be done in '4l, characterized the drive of Central's Varsity football squad which climaxed the 1941 season with six straight' victories to capture the Saginaw Valley cham- pionship and the City Championship. Upsetting a favored Saginaw team 14-0, after dropping the season's first game to Lansing Eastern and being held to a 0-0 tie by Lansing Central in the second, the Indians went on to win the Valley title. In the annual turkey game, the Indians gained possession of the Wildanger trophy by defeating the North end boys 13 to O. Concluding the '41 season the squad had its annual football banquet in the school cafeteria. The team chose Dan Sullivan, quarterback, and lerry Meadows, center, as honorary co-cap- tains. With Coach Auer and Assistant Coach Udell keeping the team on its toes with plays for the season's games, Stan Broome, the Indian's trainer, nursed the bumps and bruises they received while practicing. Yenner Madaras and lim Vitany were the team managers. Before hitting its stride the Tribe lost the opening game I3 to 0 to Lansing Eastern. Scoring both touchdowns in the first half, the powerful Eastern team defeated every effort made by the Indians to score. Chandnois scores against Northern with every man carrying out his assignment. Referee Dick Remington signals Central's lone touchdown against Pontiac Traveling to Saginaw for the third game, Central defeated a favored Eastern team 14 to O. The first of the two scores chalked up in the opening quarter was the result of a 65 yard run by halfback George Guerre. The second was the outcome of a pass from Guerre to Frenchie Sullivan which was deflected by halfback Pabalis of Saginaw into Sul1ivan's arms. With Dan Sullivan holding, Frenchie made both attempts for the extra points. Playing on a drenched field in the second contest, the Indians battled a Lansing Eastern team to a 0 to 0 tie. The Indians' great line play was the outstanding factor which prevented the visitors' scoring. Bay City was the victim of a powerful offense in the fourth game and was on the short end of a 33 to 0 score. Fullback Lynn Chandnois scored twice while George Guerre, Iack Park, and Frenchie Sullivan each scored once. The extra point combination of Sullivan and Sullivan was successful three times. By defeating Saginaw Arthur Hill 19 to 7 on a water-soaked field at Atwood Stadium, the Indians continued their winning streak. Un- leashing new razzle-dazzle plays which clicked frequently during the game, Central scored three times with Sullivan adding another point. The Arthur Hill score was the first Valley score on the Indians' defense during the season. Central again took to the road to challenge Pontiac, a worthy opponent intent on terminat- ing the Tribe's winning streak. Chandnois made the longest run and the only touchdown of the day to give Central a 6 to O victory. Crowding out Owosso 13 to 12 in the last seconds of play was probably the most exciting game of the season. Taking an early lead, Owosso scored in the first quarter. Then Cen- tral's fullback, Ioe Ponsetto, plunged for six points to tie the score. Intercepting a short pass behind the line of scrimmage an Owosso line- man ran 60 yards unmolested to score. The extra point was blocked so the score remained 12 to 6 until the end of the last quarter. With less than two minutes to play it seemed almost hopeless for the Indians. Then Central's pass- ing ace, Iohn Thompson, was rushed into the lineup. On the fourth play Thompson threw a 60 yard pass over the Owosso safety man into the waiting arms of Frenchie Sullivan who raced to the 7 yard line. Chandnois scored on the following play to tie the score. Danny held, Frenchie kicked, and the ball split the up- rights for the winning point. By defeating Northern 13 to 0 on Thanks- giving Day, Central completed the season with not only the Valley Championship but also the coveted City Championship. Chandnois, the Valley's highest scorer, made both touchdowns. Central made two sensational defenses on the 3 yard and 5 yard lines early in the game on Northern's two threats to score. CITY CHAMPIONS 1942 Taking and holding the lead through- out the game, Central's Bucketeers trounced Northern 33 to 21 in the second game of the City Championship series, to capture the Wildanger Trophy. Win- ning this game clinched third place in the Valley standings for the Tribe. The luck of the draw put the Indians against the favored Saginaw Eastern quintet in the Regionals. After playing a nip and tuck battle for three quarters. the Tribe was unable to halt a 19-point A Bit of Action for the City Championship Game drive in the final frame. Chandnois was high scorer with 23 points. The Indians opened the season against Owosso with a 34- I9 victory. The second game saw Ann Arbor as opponents, while the second Valley tussle was with Arthur Hill of Saginaw. Northern took the first game of the City series by a close score of 27-24 after a see-saw battle. This game was later declared a forfeit to Central by the State Athletic Association. VARSITY RESERVES-Front Row: Benny Krusesto, Steve Sivosky. Dean Tobias, Ben Adams, Paul Sheik Tubby Williams. Back Row: Jack Kennedy, Francis Hudson, Melbourne Pottruff, Clare Weaver, Dave Elston SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL Central was fortunate in again hav- ing a fine Sophomore basketball team. Ierry Udell lcoachl was responsible for the fine record of the team. Since the Sophomore squad trains and develops men for the Varsity it is invaluable to the basketball set-up. In the first of the series the boys were on the short end of the score 5 out of 7 times. However, in the final series, they did an about- face, coming out the victor 5 out of 7 times, showing the splendid improve- ment that was the reward of hard work. Co-captains for the first team were lack Hodge and Neal Rohner. First team members were Lefty Morrell, Eddy Mil- ler, Chet Wilkinson, Rex Parsell, Keith Chisholm, and Al Harris. RESERVE BASKETBALL Outstanding play was shown by the Reserves this season. Out of fourteen games Central's Warriors emerged with twelve scalps. Promising players on the Reserves were Elmo Gratsch, a 10-B, Dick Hallwood, and Bud Dulude. REGIONAL AND STATE CHAMPIONS Coach Francis Smith's 1941 Cross- Country team proved to be one of the best teams ever to be produced at Central. Paced by Rutilio Enzastiga the tribe harriers went through the entire season undefeated, including a victory by the second team over Saginaw. Central continued its excellent record by going on to win the Regional and State Titles. Ruglio Enzastiga, Bill Wells, Iimmie Massar, Bill Stevenson, Stan- ford McGlone and Charlie Zietz made up the team that won the Regional and State crowns for the third time in the last four years. The absence of Enzastiga, one of Central's greatest cross-country and track stars, will be a big loss to the 1942 team but Coach Smith will have enough veterans and new material for a very promising team in 1942. CITY CHAMPIONS 1941 Central's 1941 Track team had an exceedingly fine season, winning all their scheduled meets, winning the regions, and placing seventh in the state contest. The state meet provided keen com- petition for the Tribe, but through the combined efforts of the season's stars, Iohn Thompson, Auldin Nelson, Hank Clark, Steve Le Porte, and Rutilio Enzastiga, they came through for a 14 V2-point seventh-place berth for Coach Francis Smith's training efforts. So far in the 1942 season Central has met Northem but once. In this meet the Tribe broke three city records and also broke the Dort Field shot put record. Hank Clark shattered the former city mark for the half-mile event by making it in 2:02.3. Central placed first, second, and third in this event. The final score was Northern 67, Central 37. Indian Thinclads defeated Saginaw SSW to 48W in spite of Saginaw's slams in the 100-yard dash and pole vault. Central slammed in the W-mile and took first and second in the mile, both hurdles and the high jump. The Regionals at Owosso and the State meet were uncertain quantities. SWIMMING Under the able direction of Coach Iohn Milholland Centra1's swimming team surged forward to great honors during the 1941 Season, defeating Pon- tiac twice and Lansing Central once, and bowed to both Ann Arbor and Iackson. In the State Championship contests they received additional fame. In the backstroke of the State Championship, Bill Kelley captured first berth and lim McTaggart placed fifth. Stacey De- Camp received third place in the fifty yard free style, while Ross Crawley scored second in diving. The medley relay tied for fifth place. The team as a whole ranked fourth in the state meet being led by Iackson, Battle Creek, and Ann Arbor. At the end of the season Bill McTaggart was chosen Captain by vote of the entire squad. The divers were coached by Stanley Broome. GOLF SQUAD-Front Row: Bob Bellen- ger, Iack Magidsohn, Iohn Turner. Back Row: Bud McKinley, Merton Burkholder. Mr. Sulho Nurmi, Harold Carr. VALLEY AND REGIONAL CHAMPIONS The Golf Squad of 1941 was a team that Central was proud of. Coached by Mr. Sulho Nurmi, they won the Valley Championship and the Regional, de- spite the loss of the City Championship. The team was composed of B. B. Stipes, Lyle Arehart, Ioe Carr, Bud McKinley, Merton Burkholder, Bob Ballenger, and Iohn Turner. Coach Nurmi expected the 1942 squad to even surpass the 1941 team, in as much as Carr, McKinley, Burkholder, Ballenger, and Turner retumed. They were greatly favored to win the Darn- ton Trophy as a return from Northern's taking the City Crown in 1941. Coach Stanley Broome's baseball squad ended the 1941 season in third place in the Valley Standings, topped by Northern in first place and Arthur Hill in second position. Our team took the City Championship by defeating Northern two games out of three and thereby gained the first leg of the Ethel Kline City series trophy. The squad's heaviest hitter was stortstop Frenchy Sullivan and the leading pitcher I. C. Ross won four and dropped two. The 1942 Varsity had five former players back: Sullivan, shortstop: Rol- lins, 3rd base: Guerre, outfield: Massar, 2nd base: and Williams, pitcher. Other outstanding candidates who worked up from the reserve team were Snider, lst base: Martin, Slocum, Nunn. Shiek, and Lewis, pitchers. The 1942 team made a stronger hitting organiza- tion: its defense was also stronger, and the pitching was seemingly favorable. TENNIS The 1942 Indian Net Squad, under Coach Clement Rowe, continued its success of previous years. With a record of four in a row to the middle of May, the netters chalked up their 37th consecutive dual match victory in defeating Midland 6 to 3. The Tribe was favored to win the City series, having won the first tilt, defeating Northern 7 to 2. TENNIS SQUAD-Front Row: lack Maatch, Dick Meade, Bill Crow Mr Clement Rowe. This gala, eleven-act production, playing to packed houses on November 27, 28, 29, was directed by Mrs. Maude Stewart Beagle. According to tradition the Central High School Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Walter Bloch, followed the Opening Chorus. The Critic, an Attic Players' comedy, had an unusual beginning-in the aisles. The drama department presented a patriotic play Land of the Free which dealt with a fifth columnist, a German refugee, and their effect on an American family. Great Victories Won by American Women was the subject of a series of pictures posed by the Equestriennes. '-!AXI'lDUdlf' - fam oscope The Central High School A Cappella Choir directed by Franklyn S. Weddle sank two selections. A broadcast Knittin' for Britain, a satire on club women and their activities, was given by the Belle Masque Club. The Girls' Ballet, in a dance pantomine set to music, presented a very colorful and im- pressive interpretation of Sleeping Beauty. The Marching Band and the Girls' Glee Club gave excellent performances. The piece de resistance of the evening. however. was the Boys' Ballyhoo version of Sleeping Beauty entitled Sleeping Sickness or The Fate of Princess Rip Van Winkle in two spasms. Concluding the Kaleidoscope was Ameri- cana with music and dances typical of the Americas. V Double Door The Senior Class scored a hit with their presentation Double Door on May 13 and 14. Suspense, mystery, and drama, as well as excellent direction and interpretation made the perform- ance among the most unusual ever pre- sented in our auditorium. The plot centered around the domineering char- acter of Victoria Van Bret who rules her family with maniacal firmness. Her meek sister, Caroline, is helpless be- fore Victoria's threats. Kip, her half brother, cannot stand up against her. In a dark, dismal room she carries out her cheerless routine with cruel regularity. She becomes even more heartless when Rip marries Ann, who, Victoria sensed, is a threat to the Van Bret fortunes. Victoria then proceeds by every means to torture Ann and to make Rip doubt her sincerity. Much credit was due the cast and Mrs. Helen Hardy Brown, the director, for staging a most successful perform- ance. The cast: Victoria, Leona Burrows and Betty Kovacs: Rip, Norman Ander- son and Ronald Dunfield: Caroline, Vivian Short and Betty Bee Iohnston: Ann, Gayle Wenger and Iustine Grout: Dr. Sully, Crellis Meythaler: Mortimer Neff, Bill Hamady. Others were Lotof Farah, Iack Wilson, Grace Barrett, Rob- ert Owens, Betty Gower, and Florence Bailies. llBabll As always the Iunior class can be counted on to obtain the best for its class play, and 1942 was no exception. On February 19 and 20, after weeks of preparation, the class pre- sented Edward Childs Carpenter's Bab, under the able direction of Mrs. Helen Hardy Brown. Francis Sullivan and Sadie Baxter shared the starring honors in the role of Bab, and portrayed her as only a Centralite could. Large audiences viewed and enjoyed the antics of this lovable character throughout the whole of four hilarious acts. The story is built around the unexpected return of Bab from an eastern school. Her return causes much confusion when she invents for herself a lover to get some attention. Members of the cast included Stacey De- Camp, lack Woodbeck, Bob Carter, Denny Morrison, Patricia Bishop, Shirley Boyle, Victor Herwitz, Martha Gault, Eleanor Nickey, Phyllis Fowler, Robert Louis, and Addie Wells. Enough credit cannot be given to those who gave of time and energy behind the scenes to make this Iunior play one of the best. YEOMAN OF THE GUARD On April 29 and 30, and May 1, the Music Department students presented a Gilbert and Sullivan opera Yoeman of the Guard. This is a comic opera in two acts which takes place in medieval London. Yoeman of the Guard has a tangled romantic plot which centers around the adventures of Colonel Fairfax, a brave soldier who is doomed to death for sorcery. Students altemated for several of the major roles on different nights, the cast being: Colonel Fairfax .......... Phoebe Meryll ..... Wilfred Shadbolt ...............,.... Dame Carnithers ................... Sergeant Meryll.. Leonard Meryll ......... Sir Richard ........... Elsie Maynard ....... ......... Iack Point ............. Taylor ........Sue Erbaugh and Faith Kemp ....Robert Brundle and Bill Ainsley .Marjorie Wolfe and Iean Thalner ...................................George Rickey .....Bil1 Lundy and Harold Wagner ............................................ Dean Millard .Bettie Beattie and Christine Monk Shelley The cast also included a chorus of Yeomen of the Guard and other citizens and gentlemen. Ioan West and Betty Bradfield, accompanists, were supported by the Central Orchestra. With Mr. Franklyn S. Weddle directing and Mr. Thomas Davy in charge of dramatics, our annual all-student opera was a huge success. The Attic Players presented their eleventh annual play, The College Widow, on March 19, 20, 21. Taking place on a college campus the play concems the rivalry between Atwater College and Bingham College. In order to secure for Atwater the success of the coming football game between the two colleges, the College Widow cleverly tricks an important halfback to enroll at Atwater and play on the team. By the presentation of this laugh- packed production, the Attic Players added another success to their already growing list of fine performances. Much credit is due Mrs. Maude Stew- art Beagle for directing the play. In the title role as the College Widow were Iustine Grout and Marilyn Bundles. Bud Haggart and Stewart Rollins played the halfback while other members of the cast were Peter Blake, Robert Woody, Audrey Chatters, Iohn Hanger, Lotoi Farah, Guy Merritt, Harry Newblatt, Hallie Williams, Ioyce Bears, Elizabeth DeHaan, Gaylon Club, Roberta Lipske, and Pat Rodgers. Hawley. With a handful of green as grass debaters, Coach Hawley did the amazing and produced another team of State Cham- pionship caliber-his third in the last five years. Flint Central can well be proud of the fine record which Mr. Hawley has built for our school in his eight years here as debate coach. In order to qualify for the State Eliminations, the Central squad won first place in the Saginaw Valley Series and won three out of four in the State League Series. Where defeat would mean sudden death, the Central squad, in the eliminations, defeated in order: Pontiac, Bay City, Alpena, Bad Axe, and Detroit Pershing. Those who debated on the Varsity during the year were: Lewis Lardie, Lawrence Hester, Ruth Lang, Ioan Wes- cott, and the State Finalist team, Iean Harris, Betty Leavitt, and Iames Wright. The latter three composed Central's championship debate team which en- gaged Grand Bapids Union High School in the State Debate Finals before an audience of 3,000 in Hill Auditorium on the U. of M. campus, in Ann Arbor. An unusual factor about the green as grass finalists was that all were competing in their first year of debate. Central lost on a close split-decision to the affirmative team, but all received equal awards. The participants from both schools received 17-jewel gold watches, and in addition, their schools received beautiful gold trophies pre- sented by the Michigan High School Forensic Association. Saginaw Valley 1942 l Debate Squad which reached State Finals Iamboree When the lights were dimmed the spotlight was focused on Central's 10th annual Iamboree with berouged Master of Ceremonies, Stan Broome, officiating. The traditionally rip-roaring performance was sponsored by the physical education department and featured the erst- while sedate faculty. Barefoot acrobats, roller- cade skating, a disastrous truth and conse- quences game, and a hilarious Maypole dance comprised the program. Drawing for door prizes provided another period of excitement. After defense stamps, jackets, and a tennis racquet were drawn, the outstanding prize of the evening, an expensive wrist watch, was obtained by Shirley Baldiccini. Following the drawing, the boys' gym was opened for dancing to conclude the evening's fun.
