Fire is the embodi- ment of enthusiasm and ambition: light-the more steady flame of knowledge and wisdom. Because they are such vital forces in the life of the student, the 1930 Prospectus has tried to give a lasting impression, within the pages of this volume. of the progress of light-from its crude, primitive beginnings to the splendor of its twentieth century incandescence. As it has grown, so Education has had its growth. It is a process of improved illumination. Flint on wood produced the first spark of light--a process which the name of our school and city immortalizes-and the other stages of light followedg crude fire torches, whale oil lamps. Hickering candles, the wick lamp of yesterday. and finally the incandescent lamp, the golden anniversary of which paid glowing tribute to its inventor, Thomas Alva Edison-who. because of his intense desire to make this a better world, has brought improved heat and light to the homes of mankind. Education, too, has advanced through the mazes of time until, like heat and light, it also has made the greatest industry and the humblest home a more habit- able place in which to work and live. As Christian stumbled falteringly-although surely-on his way toward the heights, so Youth, eager to learn and to -do, aided by Ideals and Faith, plods on to his summit of achievement. This book would depict that progress-it would do more, for it would thank those who have made this progress possible. It is our earnest intent that the light which this Prospectus sheds upon your Central High School days will help you to realize your opportunities-help you to see your high school as a brilliant pageantg with its pathos, its happiness and its golden store of memories.
