There are a number of young men on the team of whom the coach is very proud. Bernard Green, a 240 lb. guard, was the captain and leoder on the field. Bernard made first team Al-City and second team Al-County Green averaged 13M� tackles a game and hod 18 quarterback socks this season. A number of revision I and division I coieges are interested in Green. Robert Thompson, a 215 t . tackle, was the second leading tackier and made first team Al-City. Dexter Wdiiams. a 155 b. running bock, was the second leading rusher and scorer and made second team Al-City. Maurice Bennett a quarterback, was a three year starter He threw two touchdown passes and did a good job as an outside bnebacker. Mourice Mopps. a 190 fc . center and outside linebacker, wi receive the team player of the year award Mapps was a half-back that converted to center where he did a great job He also gave an outlandish job as the strong side outside line backer Kyle Moore, a 255 lb. fulbock and tackle, led the Newark City League in scoring and rushing He was the second leading scorer in Essex County. Each team member trains himself or herself through rigid practice schedules and conditioning along with assistance from tennis coach. Wfl we have bench strength? Can we overcome the favorite Barringer team and the highly-improved East Side team? Wfl the new program at Science High, led by former Central assistant coach. Jeff Bam. be a hidden obstacle to a title? Responded Coach Battaglini. This team has always played well under adverse conditions, whether they be player - personnel or insufficient budgets or inadequate fac«ti©s or a host of other impedrnents to success The mark of a Central basebal team is its scrappmess and intransigence These kids are tough and they enjoy proving it. We'll find a way to win The road to fulfillment may be. as Frost said, the one 'less traveled’, but we'l be on it! As evidenced by their third league title in six years, the Blue Devils have made a habit of paving their own road to success The challenge to repeat as champions rests with a determined group of seniors. Ambiorix Diaz, coming off 7 victories as an Al-City junior, will anchor the pitching staff The feisty righthander should continue to baffle rival hitters with a combination of fastbafls. curves and his Dominican paimban Steve Fisher, a wiry shortstop-pitcher, will be the 2 starter and anchor an inexperienced infield. Steve is a fine hitter with good baseball instincts. Darnel Graham wi be the signal-caler The Al-City catcher wfl be counted on to drive in runs He wfl be joined by thirdbaseman Orlando Purnell in the middle of the lineup. The potentially powerful righthanded-lefthanded combination of those two hitters should terrorize more than one pitcher in the area Seniors will roam leftfield and rightfield this year. Darrel Love and Dedric Watson ore both coming off good American Legion seasons. Senior newcomer Bernard Green will try to win the first-base job while Kenny The Terminator Ward wfl be the pitching staff's 3 starter and ace rekever Louis Rengifo and Kenya Rogers round out the senior crop. As coach Battaglini points out, The uncertainty could dissipate quickly if our younger ballplayers contribute early. The younger players referred to are secondbaseman Sean Chapman, a junior, and Floyd Robeson, a sophomore centerfielder. With good play from these young men Coach Battog-fri could add significantly to his 125 victories since 1980. The teom of Lakisha Harris. Shawonda Jones. Alnisa Smith and la-Shdnda Carter was the fastest 880 relay team in the state of New Jersey. (Time 1 46.2) They were also the second fastest mile relay of 4:06. Adrienne Davis's personal best, this year indoor was 400 - 59 1 and 800 - 2:26 Shawanda Jones ran 58 0 in the 400 Indoors and Lakisha Harris ran a personal best in the 200 and 400. Ed Campbell ran 53 in the Essex County Championship (Watch out for this team outdoors in 1988 ) Robert Thompson. a second year runner has shown that hard work can pay off. Robert coming off an outstanding football season, is having a good indoor track season. Mr Thompson held the title of City Champ in the 55 meter dash and finished 5th. out of 110 competitors in the N.J.S.I.A.A Group II Championship in the 55 meter. However, this year we have that winning spirit. We have three of our best players returning as seniors. We have Chelsie Hines, as catcher. Amanda Covington, as outfielder, and our al-f� eld player. The Centra Blue Devil Basketball Team had a lot of talent, it was just a matter of putting that talent together The Central Blue Devils got started with a slow start, losing their first three games, but then they got on the right track by winning their next three. The team was lead by the two coptams Alan Ferrell and Douglas Evans Douglas Evans, the small forward, started every game and finished the year being the teams high scorer Alan Ferrell, the point guard, finished second in scoring and gave the team the leadership it needed Danny Rodriquez came off the bench as sixth man and provided the spark by hitting three point shots. The coaching staff was a good one, with head coach Calvin Blue at charge.
