Our three talented teachers, Ms Barnes, Mr. Fuller and Ms. Jacobs stress these qualities in their art courses. It is not the primary aim of our art program to make artists of students. It is rather to make them feel at home in the world of art - giving them the kind of knowledge and experience that will carry over into their out of school activities and enable them to express themselves tastefully and creatively in later years. This paral- lels the recent emphasis placed on career preparedness. All shop classes are taught safety and correct use of hand tools and machines. In most cases, useful projects are produced INDUSTRIAL ARTS BUSINESS The Business Department prepares students for entry-lev- el positions in the world of work. A program called C.O.E (work study) provides an opportunity for seniors to attend school and work for pay during the school year. A state mandated course called Career Education has helped eleventh graders survey various fields of work in order to choose the areas which interest them. They also learn how to prepare resumes and practice for job interviews MRS. There are choral groups for those with an appreciation for singing such as mixed chorus and gospel chorus. These groups present concerts and sing for other special events. It includes such diverse subjects as Sociology, World Affairs, Civics, Law In Action and Afro-American Studies. A formal studio portrait as well as a plaque is also prepared for each student of the month by Lorstan-Thomas Studios, the sponsor of this City-wide pro- gram. The portrait hangs in the conference room at the Board of Education each month. In June, a student of the year will be selected from among the monthly winners. The student of the year will receive a scholarship award in a formal presentation ceremony during the High Schools' Day program. This program is co-sponsored by the Student Government and Na- tional Honor Society. The strong, Central hitting game will again be the menace of city rivals. Last year's champi- onship club batted a school record .342 and was one of the county leaders in scoring This year's veteran club looks to surpass those totals and break all existing school records for hitting, scoring and basestealing. Led by All - County players, Clarence Allen and Delvin Wilson, the 1985 Blue Devils will pose one of the fiercest attacks in the state. Allen hit over .400 as a junior and is looking to repeat his place on the All - State roster of fine hitting and slick fielding first basemen. Wilson, an All - County performer as an outfielder, will anchor the lineup in the cleanup position and pose a double threat as a hardthrowing member of the county's most experienced pitching staff. Alden Woodard, a 1984 All - City pitcher, will use his vast repetoire of pitches to fool opponents. Woodard is becoming feared throughout the league as the one guy who can make a hitter look bad at the plate. Jason Smith, a sophomore phenom, will double as shortstop and pitcher. As a freshman, Jason led the team in game winning hits. Senior Danny Kilpatrick wil be the bullpen ace and play the hot corner. All pitching staffs need the wisdom of an intelligent catcher to guide them. Central's All - City receiver will be senior, Henry Mapps. Hank begins the season with high hopes of becoming an All - State selection because of his generalship, strong arm and hitting talents. Junior Sean West should follow in the Central tradition of quick, smoothfielding second basemen. Outfielders Jerry Reaves, Chris Bowles and Phil Martin, and infielders George Greene, Maurice Johnson, Tyrone Bodison and Walter Watson will work hard to contribute to this year's efforts to win more than 20 games and repeat as City Champions. Coaches Battaglini and Ballin both feel that this group of young men are pure pleasure to work with. The desire, dedication and discipline to win another title are all present in this talented corps of student - athletes. This will be possible due to the return of nine starting players. This team will be led by five sensational seniors, captain Shakeerah Mitchell, All-City centerfielder Glynnis Harvey, Marcella Odom, Stephanie Sheffield and Dorinda Person. This year's team will be sparked by alot of clutch hitting. The Offensive will count on co-captain Yvette Morris and Au- drey Young for power. Speed on the bases will be led by Kim Howell, Tammy Washington and Robin Jones. Where there is a winning team, there is Defense. Four year starter Shakeerah Mitchell will hold things down behind the plate and center fielder Glynnis Harvey looks good to re- peat as an all-city selection. The youngsters have two factors to over- come, the strangeness of the sport and its complexity. The golf swing is deceiving for it looks easier than it really is. The golf swing described in the language of physics involve such abstractions as torques, kinetic energy, centrifugal and centripetal forces, and the conversions of angular momentum. Winning the city golf championship in 83 - 84 required developing the game skills, but most of all it required possessing a team spirit in an individualistic sport. Led by Seniors Shawn McCray, Terrence Jones, Delvin Wilson, Johnathan Butts, Shawn Jones, James Evans and Tyrone Ousley, the Blue Devils fin- ished second in a weak city league which they were expected to win. Seniors Shawn McCray and Delvin Wilson led the Blue Devils on the court averaging ten and twelve points respectively. The team finished with a 14-7 record which ranked them eighth in the county. The team had its chances but came up short, going to the quarter finals in the ECT but losing to Montclair and going to the semi-finals in the state tournament but losing to Clifford Scott. They went through funda- mentals, offensive and defensive tactics along with studying some strategy Throughout the entire season this team had a positive attitude on and off the court and displayed finesse, quickness and good sportsmanship. Senior guard forward Stephanie Sheffield who had a good outside jumper averaged 12 points per game. Senior guard Debbie Solomon was awesome on defense. Senior Alden Woodard guided the mighty Blue Devils during the Cross Country Season. Coach Cole said that Alden's first season as a cross country runner was a splendid one. The past cross country season was a developing track season for Sophomores Wilson McLean, Jose Minaya, and a host of Freshmen. Desiree Minattee, Theresa Boxton, Bertina Moore and Sharonda Keith lead the girls’ team. The primary purpose of the Council is to represent the stu- dent body of Central High School, help stu- dents to improve the morale and pride of the school, illustrate leadership, provide opportuni- ties for students to share experiences in learn- ing, review and evaluate current events and act as a liaison between the school, communi- ty and the Board of Education in promoting a harmonious atmosphere The student government also sponsors and participates in many educational and social activities. This year we held the Miss Central Pageant , orientation for 8th graders from var- ious elementary schools, The Student of the Month program, Teachers' Appreciation Day, school assemblies, bulletin board displays, and the City-Wide Superintendent's Meeting The student council members, also attended a very successful 3 day workshop on Basic Par- liamentary Procedures” conducted by the li- brarians, Mrs. Mcintosh and Mrs. Butler in the Media Center The student council readily provides opportuni- ty in a representative, democratically func- tioning form of governance The members have the opportunity to demon- strate leadership ability and express their con- cern in helping to improve the school and community. WORK STUDY The cooperative work experience program combines actual work experience with ac- ademic work in high school. Under this pro- gram students carefully selected as possessing potential for successful employ- ment are placed in jobs in the local commu- nity on a part-time basis. Combining a job with school helps them to realize the rela- tionship between educational training and life. It enables the young person to acquire the attitudes, work habits and skills neces- sary to make good on the job and to make progress after securing employment. The di- versified occupations program is intended to give each trainee the opportunity to de- velop to the fullest and find in himself dignity and a greater degree of self-realization. Through this program we strive to help stu- dents bridge the gap between school and employment. FUND RAISING TIE PU COMMITTEES A special thanks to those seniors who fre- quently took a few moments out of their day to work with me on planning a few ac- tivities for the seniors. It was a struggle a nd we were not always successful in doing what we planned but | enjoyed working with you. Good luck to you all. Gail Yates Advisor MATHEMATICS CLUB The purpose of the Math Club is to enhance students' mathematical interests and skills. These goals are achieved by providing en- richment activities which are geared to- wards new concepts and critical thinking, providing tutorial assistance, utilizing the computers, discussing careers in math and taking field trips. SCIENCE CLUB The Science Club consists of a unique group of dedicated students interested in careers in the scientific field. They are instructed about the educational requirements for ca- reers in Genetics, Microbiology, Ecology, Biochemistry, Medicine, etc. The members of this club have been privi- leged to participate in two hospital pro- grams at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Clara Maass Memorial Hospital in Belle- ville. The highlight of these programs was the opportunity to witness open heart surgery. 152 YOUIH ADVISORY COUNCIL The Youth Advisory Club (YAC) is a group of students whose major goal is to make the school lunch menu more acceptable to stu- dents and staff In addition, th e club seeks to promote good nutrition through several activities and to im- prove aesthetic surroundings in the cafete- ria, usually by decorating for various occasions. HOSTESS CLUB The Hostess Committee is a group of special Central High students that serve as hostess- es for school activities. Their charm, eti- quette and protocol enrich our social functions and provide an invaluable service. The chorus has performed at the Teen-Arts Festivals at Rutgers University and has given nu- merous concerts in the metropolitan area. The Central High School Blue Devils Marching Band performs a winter and spring concert annually. The band has partici- pated in the Columbus Day Parade and Halloween Day Parade in Newark. The band has also performed in several Veterans’ Day and Memorial Day Parades in the surrounding communities. .D. CLUB This club takes ID pictures during the school year for each student. They make special ID cards for aerospace, COED, and Work Study. PRINTING CLUB This club does all the school printing, They also do work for community charity groups. They help each teacher by printing tests and handouts. 156 y m | | | x ey TT c CHESS CLUB The Chess Club consists of beginning and intermediate players who come together to challenge each other in this mind boggling game of Chess. Chess requires constant play to improve your techniques and skills as a problem-solver. ORGULLO LATINO In 1980, three teachers from the Bilingual Program organized the Hispanic students at Central High into a club which was to be known as Orgullo Latino, or Latin Pride. The club provides for two basic goals. First, it provides the opportunity for the Latino stu- dents to come together on a periodical ba- sis to discuss, plan and organize activities relevant to the Latino experience. Second, it provides the Latino students with a vehicle for fostering and strengthening friendship, civic obligations and love and respect for education. The club meets at least once a month on Tuesdays or Thursdays in room 549. The three teachers responsible for the club are Mrs. A. Mercado, Ms. M. Roig and Mr. J. Esco- bar-Carrasquillo. The club carries oüt its activities through the sponsorship of the school and A.S.P.I.R.A., an educational agency in Newark geared to meeting the needs of Puerto Rican students. HONOR SOCIETY These students are members of the National Honor Society. Each member demonstrates outstanding qualities in leadership, charac- ter, scholarship and service. These traits are a prerequisite to being a member of this prestigious group. Under the direction of Mrs. Jerelean Reed the National Honor Society volunteers their free time to students in need of tutoring. The members are also active in other school activities. TANGENT | Through interviews, sports stories, photographs, and creative writing, the Tangent keeps students in- formed of the latest happenings. The paper is under the direction of Ms. Shipman and Mrs. Boone. The Tangent is a complete newspaper with something for everyone. e; An i T i pom E oon a $ --- a ec a Y sr. FUTURE NURSES CLUB The Future Nurses' Club affords the student participants an opportunity to have expo- sure to the nursing profession and aids the student in actual future career selection. The activities for 1984-5 included service work such as Christmas baskets for the needy, clothes drive for fire victims, food and clothes for Ehtiopia, and cheer-up notes to students and staff. NYAD The Positive Alternatives Now-Council Newark Youth Against Drugs (PANC NYAD) is a peer- leadership group. Partici- pants feel free to express their problems and to work toward a real solution. 4 QVE ME u. SANDY AYTCH PAULA CRAY The cheerleaders' activities this year included cheerleading competition, varsity basketball, pa- rades, and loads of excitement For the first time in the school's history, the squad participated in cheerleading competition at the Meadowlands Arena, hosted by the N.J. Nets basketball team and their sponsors Our squad exemplified excellence in the categories of cheering and dance, and as a result finished in impressive fashion. The knowledge we acquired helped us incorporate a new look and sound into our cheers and chants. As an added bonus from the competition, we were invited back to cheer for the N.J. Nets basketball team on April 13, 1985. VANDETTA REID Varsity basketball season was filled with spirit and making new friends. As we cheered for our team from the sideline we could see«and feel the intensity being exerted through their offense and defense as a result of our support. Communication is responsible for the success of our cheerlead- ers' ability to excel to their fullest potential. Our display of sportsmanship made us a hit in the eyes of other squads. The commonality we shared with the other squads was the love and dedication for the activity we performed so well. In turn, an exchange of cheers and chants took place Parades are also a fun-filled part of our events. We participated in such parades as Columbus Day, Halloween (given by the city of Newark) and Black Heritage. These events made our school year a memorable one filled with EXCITEMENT to be remembered for a lifetime. Congratulations to the members of the squad for a job well done. Still in all, the girls did their best to keep the spirit alive. They participated in a number of parades, practices, and other school functions. The girls are ready physically and academically, to get the Blue Devil spirit ready and rolling for next year's football season. COG N PEN Sometimes putting a yearbook together can be quite trying. The color deadline for the first 16 pages is due in one week and we do not have enough color pictures to fill it We have to call the photographer immediately to take more pictures but it takes at least a week before we can get them back. Another deadline is due and we do not know how many pages to allot for the senior section because we do not know and no one seems to be able to tell us exactly how many seniors we have. There is an important layout which needs a vertical picture and we only have horizontal ones. No on remembers which type style we use and the type book is misplaced. The cropper has disappeared. No one has a pencil. There are still seniors that have not turned in their information sheets. The typewriter skips and rips the paper Everything that can go wrong does. Nervous breakdown time has arrived The above scenario is typical and familiar to all yearbook staffs. However, we were able to rise above the problems and to produce a yearbook of which we are very proud. Under the direction of Marie L. Wolsifer, yearbook adviser, a group of dedicated, responsible seniors put together this collection of memories. Giana, Quintina, Marcus and Dedry came to room 308 daily to check in and do whatever had to be done at the time. They helped to make layouts, design pages, crop pictures, type, mark Central's identification number, and the page and position number of the photo on the back of the pictures, identify the people in the photos, and collect and write copy. They did a fantastic job. Sharon, Glen, Tyrone, Frances, Debbie, Paula, Harold, Regina, Sandy, Stephanie, Kim, Melorie, Reggie, Terrence and Lawrence all helped to make this book a success.
