THE SENIOR CLASS CENTRAL HIGH NEWARK, NJ. PRESENTS THE 1979 COG'N' PEN ©Cfl@@IL®S„®©JfTSAB MJ NM) PRESENTED BY TO ' I ■ 1 ffl v tii I I 1977 78 THE GREATER NEWARK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: SPONSOR PRIDE IN OURSELVES 2 Students take 'pride' in Central By J. GREGORY CLEMONS Pride is alive and well and thriving in Newark's Central High School Project Pride. that is The project, the brainchild of the Newark Board of Education, was introduced in the high school last year and 25 students have become involved to make it work. Sharvella Tyson, a 16-year-old senior and program treasurer, said it is a program designed to show pride within the school and community. • Since the program began. she said. I’ve noticed a more positive attitude from my fellow students I remember when I was a freshman. Tyson recalled. ' The school situation was not that good,’but now I can see a difference Everyone seems to take pride in the school. • • • Participants have been displaying posters calling upon students to take responsibility for their academic work and to keep their alma mater clean, as well as publicizing other school programs and sports events. Tyson said an assembly program on Project Pride was well received and. from that, student interest in the program increased A similar nationwide program is Rev Jesse Jack-son s Project Excel, whicn began in Chicago and has since spread to several high schools in cities such as Los Angeles and Kansas City • This is a good program and here at Central we are trying to show that it is a school that can be better. Tyson said Principal James Moore said, I think Project Pride is a fantastic idea • Here you have students who are enthusiastic about it. he said They liked the idea, pushed for it and made it work Moore called the program a success that has helped develop other programs for the students with surrounding institutions such as Rutgers-Newark and the New Jersey Institute of Technology A major change since the program began. Moore noted, has been the reduction of vandalism. This year Central High School has to be one of the lowest, if not the lowest site, on record to suffer from vandalism out of the city’s 97 schools. he said proudly The kids are really turned on to Project Pride, and I am really glad to’ see them adopt the attitude. This is our school, so let's take care of it ' 3 PRIDE IN OUR 4 PRIDE IN OUR 6 RELATIONSHIPS PRIDE IN OUR 8 DETERMINATION 9 PRIDE IN OUR APPEARANCE PRIDE IN OUR 12 ENDEAVORS 13 PRIDE IN OUR M ENTHUSIASM is PRIDE IN OUR Goals and directions sag A COO,|M 16 SURROUNDINGS v a Derek Akridge John Auletta Orlando Baez Kathy Baker Derwin Allen Gwendolyn Atkinson Jeffery Auletta Jeanette Armstrong 20 Gavin Banks Nadine Bateman Kirk Betts Evelyn Barnes Tyrone Benson Michelle Bickley 71 Timothy Blanding Ramona Brison Dehryl Brown Donald Boyd Raymond Brison Theresa Bronson Anthony Brown Gwendolyn Brown Sharlene Brown Daisy Bruton Loretta Bynum Robin Clark Cynthia Burgess Richard Camacho Rosie Coleman Jackie Burrough Margo Carney Rafael Colon 23 Martin Cook Denise Cooper Denise Cousar Patricia Covin Diane Cox Ennis Cromer Elaine Daniel John Cruz Avery Curry Patricia Day Rosalind Davis Lorraine Dent Jerome Durant Lorrie Dula Darscella Durant Wanda Durant Cynthia Dashiell Lisa De Graffenreid 25 Robin Edrinaton Roger Elder Florence Ellis Nadine Etheridge Lillian Flores John Evans Irene Fryer Gale Evans Randy Franks 76 m Glenda Goshay Kevin Green Kim Grier Edwardo Goodman Karen Graham Sinclair Grey Lisa Grier Bonita Greene Odell Green Sandra Griffin Loretta Grimes Selma Hannah Marcus Harvey Dwayne Hatchett Gina Hill Gerald Holloway Edward Hawthorne Angela Hearns George Hinton Leslie Hodges Vernette Howell Janice Hopes Anthony Isaac Denise Jackson Michael Jefferson Zoraida Jimenez Rita Isom Wanda James Catherine Johnson x Edith Johnson Larry Johnson Vanessa Johnson Terrance Jones Kenneth Jones Theresa Johnston 31 Penny Judd Shirelle Kemp Don Kennedy Barry King Tyree King III Derrick Knight Kevin Lassiter Inetta Kirkland Jacqueline Lamberth Theresa La Van 33 Debra Leverette Linda Locke Ellie Lewis Migdalia Lopez Evelyn Locke Lisa McDonald Suzette Little Derek Mack Vance McClendon Linda McGhee Antoinette Mathis Tammie McCoy Gordon McGriff Beverly McClain Michael McCray Patricia McRmey Henry Moore Cassandra Murray 36 Bias Pena Benjamin Peebles Irma Perez Loretta Murray Haywood Patterson Brenda Phillips Janice Pooran Mary Ransdall Equaine Randall Tracy Pitman Sharon Ragin Eric Ransom Katherine Seburn Edgardo Saldana Patricia Smith Sheila Tapley 40 Bonita White Darlene Tucker Christine Williams Sheral Wallace Sharvella Tyson 4 Shahid Watson James Williams Lonnie Williams Timothy Wilson Roger Williams Michelle Williams Richard Wilson Roberta Wilson Gregory Wolfe Deborah Worsley Bobby Booker Sharon Young Elmo Ruiz 43 Peace In The Middle East: bit really A D M I N I S T R A T I 0 N F A A C N U D L T Y 45 PRINCIPAL James Moore, Jr. Congratulations to the Class of 1979!
