Cog 'n' Pen Central High School Newark, NJ. 1978 1 2 Table of Contents — Introduction — — Administration — — Faculty — — Seniors — — Activities — — Sports — — Ads — What Our School Means to Us . . . 3 is for Creative. Involvement trikes a willingness to give of yourself. We can all offer something different. Leadership abilities or artistic and creative flair. Talents great and small, visible or hidden. That’s not important. What matters is that we are willing to share our time and talents so that mmm others may benefit. 5 7 is for the Necessary items that we have confronted dur ing our four years — books and more books, lockers, pen cils, labs, notebooks, typewriters. passes (Hall. Nurse. Late, Guidance) cut slips, parents note, intercom, keys, CLASS DUES, suspension list and most of all a watch to beat the tardy bell! 8 9 is for Time — As we look back and remembered the happy times at Central feelinq the rewards of hard work and dedication. At other times, we felt all alone; isolated in the midst of a crowd. Our existence was one of constant new beginnings and continuous endings that filled our lives and our memories. It was our year molded by the vast and diverse character of who we were and had become. 10 12 is for Relationships. We receive two types of education at school — academic and social, each as important as the other. Relationships in which we can talk and share on a one to one basis. This strengthens and helps us grow more independent. 13 is for the Activities — the Cheerleaders spend drawn-out hours perfecting yells and going over their routines. Band members puff until they're all puffed out, trying to reach that highest note. The Blue Devil Football players lift weights and run through the drills, ignoring the aches and pains, and the growing feeling that they’ve endured about all they can. Each group practices their respective activities, knowing that their perform ance will reflect their pride and love for Central High. u 15 is for learning — our learning experiences at Central have been vast and rewarding. In keeping pace with the rapid advances of Education and Technology, new programs of learning were implemented into our academic curriculum. We were inspired by the concern of many of our teachers and grateful for the opportunities they developed MMI for us. 16 Put it all together and get reativity ducation ecessities imes elationships ctivities earning ALMA MATER High above the busy city. We would like to thank him for his many years of dedication, devotion, and service as a teacher and Vice Principal. Our sincere appreciation and best wishes always. 53 Mrs. Warren was a true friend of youth and a sincere believer in the efficacy of education in removing the curse of ignorance and one who made many good things possible at Central High School. Her great character, broad culture, wide experience, and sympathetic understanding of youth, made Mrs. Warren an outstanding citizen, an unparalled leader in our community, and a superior educator Mrs. Warren had a favorite word that she used many times at Central, that word is ••DIGNITY.,, Mrs. Warren was the embodiment of the word Dignity. We hope that some of her great •'DIGNITY is now part of our lives. Mrs. Warren’s expertise in education extended far beyond the confines of Central High School. Many State and National organizations have benefited by her contributions. The Newark School System and this city are better and finer because of her many contributions. Central will always remember Mrs. Warren, as a great teacher and Guidance Counselor. For she was a friend! 55 For every time that time that we must we've shared will we start, there is a part. WILLANI REFLECTIONS: Four years. For some It has been too long. Others have felt it has been good days and good times, but everyone agrees it has been an experience. Our freshman year seemed different in many ways, but it was a beginning. A chance to meet people, start an athletic career, and grow as individuals. It was our time now to enjoy the maturity shared only by our peers before us. Who can't remember looking up to seniors and wishing to have their nonchalant attitude? The dominant idea that sticks in our memories is the spirit shared by everyone. Saturday football games, crosstown rivals, and pep rallies headed by cheerleaders. Sophomore days of being involved, getting our feet wet, and an election in November yet to be resolved. It seemed difficult for many of us to leave friends who had become our security, but we would adjust. No graduation with the people we had learned to share important years of our lives with. One thing we had to remember: change is always needed (the White House welcomed President Carter). And yet even though we were but seventeen, the eighteen year old vote would soon be power in our hands. In year it would be our chance to get involved and help form a new society. Hopefully the wait would pass quickly. We left much, but then in our junior year we had the opportunity to establish the traditions which came to be known as the best graduating class. While chocolate life saver lollipops weren’t exactly a financial bonanza, a Victory Dance in October was. Yes, there were many things to be grateful for. Missing our old friends was behind us now. and we had carried on where other schools had left off. We had a closeness now. The Talent Show was a hit. but there would be more spectacles just ahead. Our senior year. Now we begin to think of independence, new faces, and challenges which will shape our tomorrows. We have wondered at numerous social and historical events. Confusion, instability, and corruption. But more fondly we will remember June 1978. Now let us work to achieve dreams, contemplate opportunities, and begin from this day. Farewell Central High 197 Last Will and Testament We the class of June 1978, being of sound mind andtxxJy bequeath to Mr. Moore: A bunch of sweet fun loving, well behaved students and a number 1 school.— Mr. Bey: We leave you a center fold spread in Playg,: Magazine (smile).
