A Brief History of Central High School Central Commercial and Technical High School was opened in 1912. In the 30's the school was changed to Central High - offering technical as well as college preparatory courses. Some noted facts about Central are: - During World War II it was used to train defense workers. - The second oldest school in Newark. - The only school that houses an educational radio station - WBGO - which was designed by a former Science teacher at Central. - The only school in the United States with an organ paid for solely with funds raised by students. Since the late 60's. Central High School has acquired a new modem addition that houses a large gymnasium, an Olympic swimming pool, a students' lounge, computer and conference rooms. Our science laboratories and cafeteria have been renovated . Progress at Central High is not only limited to its physical plant, but Its curriculum is continuously being updated to meet the needs of our students.
