A Brief History of the City of Newark Newark was settled In May, 1666, by Puritans who came from Connecticut. The town was called Milford, as many of the first settlers had come from the town of Milford. Connecticut, but a short time after, upon a formal organization of the town government, the name of Milford was dropped and Newark was substituted in honor of Reverend Pierson, the first pastor, who came with the people of Branford and who was ordained in Newark-On-Trent, England. It was originally spelled New Work or New Worke. Newark became a city in 1836 when it was incorporated in the name of The Mayor and common council of the city of Newark. For the preceding three years, Newark Township had operated under a four ward system, each acting separately, proposing their own ordinance, resolutions, etc. This set up caused so much confusion, the official requested the State Legislature to grant the city charter which was approved by the voters. The voters of the city in 1917 approved a change in the form of government from Mayor and common council to that of commission forms, under the Walsh Act. The official title of the municipal corporation then became The City of Newark. Throughout its history, Newark has been a gateway city providing a home for successive waves of newcomers. including the Irish, Germans. Jews. Italians. Blacks, Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Portuguese. In turn, each group has added to and enriched the cultural diversity of the city. Traditionally, the city's growing economy provided economic opportunities which enabled each generation to improve its condition and to expand its social and economic opportunities. Stylized and familiar is this rough woodcut from Atkinson s History of Newark. All the town turned out as Washington led his bedraggled army of ),500 men down Broad Street on November 22, 1776. 10
