Cog and Pen Central High School Newark, New Jersey In the Know and on the Grow in the Spirit of '76 i Central High School —1921 2 Dedication We, the graduating class of June, 1976, wish to dedicate this book to our parents as an expression of our appreciation for the priceless opportunity they gave us to obtain an education. Their advice, patience and sacrifice, given so unsparingly, we shall never forget. A Special Tribute We, the graduating class of June, 1976, would like to extend a special Bicentennial tribute to our forefathers who struggled, fought, and died for the preservation of freedom and equality of opportunities for us all. To those great ones as Harriet Tubman, Fredrick Douglass, Crispus Attucks. Marlin L. King, Jr. and many others that have contributed valuable dimensions to our individual and national life for the past 200 years. The town was called Milford, as many of the first settlers had come from the town of Milford. Connecticut, but a short time after, upon a formal organization of the town government, the name of Milford was dropped and Newark was substituted in honor of Reverend Pierson, the first pastor, who came with the people of Branford and who was ordained in Newark-On-Trent, England. It was originally spelled New Work or New Worke. Newark became a city in 1836 when it was incorporated in the name of The Mayor and common council of the city of Newark. For the preceding three years, Newark Township had operated under a four ward system, each acting separately, proposing their own ordinance, resolutions, etc. This set up caused so much confusion, the official requested the State Legislature to grant the city charter which was approved by the voters. The voters of the city in 1917 approved a change in the form of government from Mayor and common council to that of commission forms, under the Walsh Act. The official title of the municipal corporation then became The City of Newark. Throughout its history, Newark has been a gateway city providing a home for successive waves of newcomers. including the Irish, Germans. Jews. Italians. Blacks, Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Portuguese. In turn, each group has added to and enriched the cultural diversity of the city. Traditionally, the city's growing economy provided economic opportunities which enabled each generation to improve its condition and to expand its social and economic opportunities. Stylized and familiar is this rough woodcut from Atkinson s History of Newark. All the town turned out as Washington led his bedraggled army of ),500 men down Broad Street on November 22, 1776. 10 A Brief History of Central High School Central Commercial and Technical High School was opened in 1912. In the 30's the school was changed to Central High - offering technical as well as college preparatory courses. Some noted facts about Central are: - During World War II it was used to train defense workers. - The second oldest school in Newark. - The only school that houses an educational radio station - WBGO - which was designed by a former Science teacher at Central. - The only school in the United States with an organ paid for solely with funds raised by students. Since the late 60's. Central High School has acquired a new modem addition that houses a large gymnasium, an Olympic swimming pool, a students' lounge, computer and conference rooms. Our science laboratories and cafeteria have been renovated . Progress at Central High is not only limited to its physical plant, but Its curriculum is continuously being updated to meet the needs of our students. Central High School strives to be in the know and on the grow! TOYS Witnessed by: Karen Adams Shelia Morse Yvonne Jones Oxzavia Randall Billy Adams This book was begun months ago. It’s a fact now. no longer a dream. It's real and it has real meaning for real people. Some people will appreciate our efforts. Others will not bother to look at this product of many hours of hard work. For each person, the Cog and Pen will be a different book - with a unique key to unlock memories when you wipe the dust off this volume and thumb through it years from now. This book was built by a staff of mostly unexperienced workers. Thanks must be said to each of them, for all were willing to learn and to sacrifice r Cooperation and sympathy from Mrs. Hobbs and Ms. Peterman were abundant. We would like to thank them for a job well done. Our teachers were supportive and this counted much on our side. We’ve finally completed it: our months of '‘gotta get this yearbook out are ended. It's over, yet it's only begun. We hope that this history book of school year 1975-1976 will be as special to you as it is to each of us on the Cog and Pen staff. EDITORS.
