I think of time as it was then.....something of the least importance......when I was young. When I was young and had but a vague idea of right and wrong, I thought not much of time for it was merely a four-lettered word belonging to adults. When I was young, time was an infinite supply of joy, wonder, and discovery. Time evaded me in its vastness and invisible solidity — when I was young. When I was young, I lived beyond my environment— I dwelt in a world of fantasy .... (Age and experience force one to face the bitterness of reality.) Time was joyous and time was painful. Now, after so much time has elapsed, it’s still the deciding factor in my life. How I am young when I realize the universe in all its actuality of all that is. How I am young when I realize the seemingly endless path of joy, grief, pain, and discovery before me — until death. Perhaps I’ll miss a good deal of possible experiences; may Fate have mercy — whatever! How I am young as I am the heart of my future, the seed of my accomplishments. The first step has been taken......with all of my sincerity, I thank each and every person responsible. And now, this time has stopped — today, this very moment, now........... Mallory, Coach This year, our football team has provided the students, as well as the faculty, with something extra to converse about. We actually took the City Championship away from Barringer, always a title contender. They finished second behind Weequahk in the City League. We defeated Barringer, 8-6. The eight points were supplied by Arthur laxkctt, whose tackle in the end zone for a safety gave the Blue Devils two points. Willis Cooper picked up a loose fumble and scampered into the end zone for the winning margin. Barringer, incidentally tied the number one team in the state. East Orange. Outstanding young men for this year’s squad include: Levi Drakeford, Eugene Scott, Arthur Lockett, and Sylvester Waters. These boys received recognition on the All-City teams. Prominent seniors include the above-named plus William Wilson, Ed Gandy, Louis Shaw, Dana Spinks, Mike Henry, Theodore Byers, Eddie Felton, and Charles McNabb. The quarterbacking Eddie Gandy Willis Cooper job was shared by three boys: Barry Benson, Barry Hardaway, and Roger McCrae. These boss will vie for the job next year. Coach Bill Mallory has apparently instilled a winning attitude into the boys. It obviously has paid off handsomely. In his first year. Coach Mallory has done the one thing thought impossible: he stole the City League Championship away from Barringer. He and his team battled South Side, a perennial football power, to a scoreless duel. Gxich Mallory, a former All-Stater at Summit High, has visited football clinics. He is formulating a formidable team for the coming season. He will try to make a 1-6-1 team (last year's record) into a contender. He will count on such boys as Bruce Morgan, Girl Hodges, Donald Summers, Frank Bridges, and George Worslcy. Fie will also have boys from the J.V. to contribute to a winning season. We wish Coach Mallory all the success in his effort to convert Central into a City’ League power. Levi Drakeford Arthur Lockett Back Row, left to right: — Mr. E. Although we did not win all the games played, our reputation was strengthened. Our team, composed of strong-willed boys, realized that we wouldn't lose any more games. We wanted to please our coach, to put a smile on his face by winning the game against Irvington Tech, -f-3. The opponents almost beat us by 3-1, but a quick decision of our most valuable player, Jean, scored three more goals which closed the score • •3 in our favor. We used our best ability to win the three last games. Jean Charles. Ben Pasley, Jacques Charles, Mr. E. Smith (Coach). Central has been blessed with another fine basketball team. During the pre-sea-soned polls, we were fortunate to be rated No. 2” nationally and were also heralded to be a State basketball power. The starters include Larry Faust, George Lowery, Bernie Brundidge, Mack (Kick) Key, and Arthur Lockett. Two good players were added to the squad this year. These arc seniors Henry Carr and Gordon Hall. Returning from last year's squad arc Jerry Stancil, Robby Long, and Mike Jones, who arc all juniors. Rounding out this year's team were Tom Lowery, Wymond Griggs, anti Dan Branch. The first game in the City decided who would be the kings of the City. We defeated a good West Side quintet at our home court. We gained two more triumphs before advancing to the ECCA Holiday Tournament. In this tournament, we were seeded No. 2, behind Boys' High of New York. In the championship game, we stayed with Boys' High in the first half, despite many turnovers. The second half Boys’ High shot well enough to give the Blue Devils their first taste of defeat. This year's basketball team has been hampered by the fact that they turned the ball over too many times. But with this handicap, we were still a club to be taken seriously. In Mack Key, we have a young man who is as fine a backcourt man as any in the land. Larry Faust, who has no peer on the court, is the best rebounder in the state. Arthur Lockett contributed to this squad the tremendous ability to hustle. Wc won the City League Championship this year with a 11-1 record. Our only loss in the City-League was to West Side at the latter’s court. Central also ran into a good St. Benedict's quintet at St. Benedict's court, and lost. The next step for the Blue Devils was the Essex County Tournament. In Essex County, we were seeded No. 2 behind undefeated Orange High. We encountered Immaculate Conception in the opening round. We broke 3 E.CT. records in a row to a 91 point night. Next, we defeated Wee-quahic and East Orange, to meet Orange in the finals. The boys literally expressed their desire to win by outscoring Orange in each of the first 3 quarters. Mack Key and Larry Faust led the surge. Despite the 8-point lead. Orange came from behind to win a squeaker: 65-64. However, Central — like true champions — bounced back to trounce Bayonne at their court. Mack Key, Bernie Brundidge, and Art I.ockcrt bid a second half surge, where we scored 50 points. The State Tournament was our next stepping stone. We defeated East Orange and Wecquahic, to meet Bloomfield in the North Jersey Group IV Section 2 Final. Larry Faust led the team's rally, and added another trophy to our trophy case. Neptune was our next victim in the semi-finals of the Group IV schools. Neptune, a scrappy ball club, would not give up and held off our rally to defeat us 83-81 in Atlantic City. Next year, wc should look forward to another formidable team. To our senior boys, we bid them a prosperous college education and the best of everything throughout their lives. Junior Varsity Basketball Mr. John Cavan, Coach Central’s Baby Blue Devils racked up 25 victories in a row and finished the season undefeated. Coach Cavan won his fourth Junior Varsity City Championship in as many years. On March 1st. the Baby Blues defeated a much bigger East Orange team and won the Essex County Tournament Championship. The JV's averaged 76 points per game to their opponents 43 points per game. The high-scoring Blue Devils went over the century mark twice, defeating West Side 108 to 40 and Vailsburg 102 to 33. They also scored over 90 points in eight other games. This was the most successful team that Central has had on the JV level! Left to right: Byron Harley, Coach John Cavan, Russell Bland. The team is large in number and size. The runners will be forced to curry a heavy burden because of the lack of experienced field men. The field men are practicing hard and improving with time. Whether they will be ready when the season officially starts, no one knows. Our outstanding field men are Cornelius Brown. Davis Shaw and Arthur Lockett. The runners arc all experienced. They will be led by Captains Mack Frazier and Ixstcr Gillbert in the two-mile. Marion Pierce will try to repeat as city champ in the mile. Williams, Coach Our Fencing Team started only two years ago at Central, and this is one of the more popular new sports here. Fencing, like swimming, is a sport in which the individual shows his talent to think, evaluate, and react in a situation quickly and correctly. Our team — with William Wilson, Larry Cooper, and Bruce Chapman — had a smoother performance in the second half of this season than when the season began. Such improvement was shown through our defeating Vailsburg and West Side and in our giving the top teams (Barringer and Wecquahic) a tough time. Our team has the potential to win the championship this year and next with our promising young JV. made up of Hector Munoz, Dennis Scott Bey, Lcnwood Morgan, and Gary Chapman. Thinking wc really rules! the school. Meeting hard teachers and some easy. Listening and joining in with the laughing in the hallways with the loud and comical Seniors. And then, June came! The Seniors officially turned the school over to us. At last, our day had come. Seniors we were at long last! After three long years.
